watching the channel last night and they have a brett favre thing on about his high school/college, and NFL days.....

the jets actually called favre during the 1991 draft and apparently told him he was their choice if the falcons didn't take him....

of course the football gods wouldn't allow that. he was taken by the falcons and i guess the jets had to scramble a bit hence the choice of b. nagle.

not sure if the early favre would have lasted here. would have been something to see anyway.

i guess the other jet execs forgot about favre but ron wolf sure didn't and traded for him in GB and the rest is history.

One of the reasons we haven't won a SB or even been to one is our history is littered w/ "almosts" or "what ifs":

we get Namath, he can never stay healthy, what if he did?

we have a chance to draft Dan Marino and pass
we have a chance to draft Jerry Rice and pass

what if we don't sit back and we move up and get Favre?

what if Parcells comes back in 2000?
what if Vinny doesn't get hurt in '99?
what if BP assures Peyton he would take him #1? we have Peyton since '97

what if BP doesn't run off BB? think about this, if Belichick did what he was supposed to and took over for Parcells in 2000 we would have had the NE staff in place and probably drafted Brady. do you see how close we were to either Peyton or Brady?

what if Gastineau doesn't get that roughing penalty?
what if Doug Brien makes one of 2 FGs at Pitt?

what if they call the fumble on Sanchez at Pitt an incomplete pass or what if the D could have gotten a stop late?
what if half our secondary and Shonn Greene don't leave the title game at Indy?
what if Miami used a tarp in '82?
what if Meggett catches that KO at Den '98?

if a few of those turn into positives we probably have multiple SBs but we are a "what if" franchise. Hopefully that changes in the coming years.

indeed junc - also remember watching a top ten list of snakebitten franchises and the jets clocked in at #6 or 7......geez i would have thought they would easily be top 3 considering all the history on and off the field.

It was actually worse than that.

The Jets that year didn't have a 1st rounder because they took Rob Moore in the supplemental draft the year before. As a Syracuse alum I was happy but didn't realize how it would effect our Jets.

The year of the 1991 draft, Ron Wolf was in our front office as director of player personnel and apparently loved Favre. So much so that reports were he actually had a draft day deal with the Falcons to trade up and select Favre- can't remember but it was just a spot or two, might have been the very pick before us. But at the last minute, the Falcons pulled out of the trade and took Favre themselves. Apparently the Jets we so set on Favre, were so set on the trade that when the Falcons took him, the Jets war room just wigged out and took the next QB on their board, Browning Nagle.

Funny think is, Glanville hated Favre and refuse to play him.

Ron Wolf left the Jets after the 1991 season and was hired by Green Bay to be their GM and the first thing he did was trade a first round pick for Favre. At least someone in the Jets brain trust new the deal, but he didn't get him until he was ex-Jet brain trust.

Edit: it was the very pick before us, we had the 34, Falcons had the 33. Dammit.

My 2 most disappointing/agonizing moments as a Jet fan.

Those were tough days. On the posi
    Those were very tough days.

add in Cle '86 and Pitt '10. Pitt '10 might now be my worst b/c I thought we were the better team and it was very winnable plus what we have seen the last 3 years not getting close again.

Not considering we actually WON a Super Bowl. I'm sure Cleveland/Minnesota/Buffalo/Detroit/Philly were probably above us. Although yeah we have had some hideous luck with the Vinny injury in '99, Billy Boy leaving that same offseason. And we've made some of our own bad luck like canning Walt Michaels after the AFC Championship.
