The New York Jets, who acquired Brett Favre in an early August trade with the Green Bay Packers, vaulted seven places from No. 23 in the July rankings to No. 16 in this edition. 16 (23) - Jets 4-12-0 - The O-line appears fantastic, and their defensive additions have made a noticeable difference. If Brett Favre can cope with the big change, look out. (TG) To be honest, I think the Jets going to be better than 16th, I say theyll be right around 9 or 10. the Jets will be better than the Packers, Vikings, Eagles and the Titans. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/powerranking?season=2008&week=1
I'd bump them up to 13, ahead of Cleveland, Tampa Bay, and Tennessee. I wouldn't be surprised if they get even better, but I wouldn't rank them any higher without seeing something on the field.
I agree that the Jets are going to be better than 16th this year, but I think the Vikings are going to be one of the top 3 teams in football.
Aside from the rankings, what they had to say was very encouraging. I think Grahams a no talent fool, but he has said the o-line looks great in his blog.
i have no problem with 16 we were 4-12, which is terrible you don't play football with a depth chart ... teams that should be good often aren't ... until they start winning games i don't expect anyone else around the league to start giving the jets respect look at our record from last year and look at where we are ranked compared to other teams and their records ... i'm impressed they actually put the jets that high
Exactly what I was thinking. Its nice that they have us that high before any meaningful football is played, but I never read much into preseason rankings.
Really?? We both agree that the Jets will be better than 16nth, (i actually think they will be an 11 win team and should fit just within the top 5 or 6 teams) but I must say that I think you are easily overrating the Vikings. Their quarterback is totally unproven (and has played very inconsistently up to this point in his career) and, while their running game and run defense are both among the best in the sport, their passing game and pass defense are both WELL below average. Their overall defense is considerably overrated by fans and pundits because everyone focuses on their tremendous front seven against the run while ignoring their mediocre secondary and only slightly above average pass rush. Also, I think Adrian Peterson, as tremendous as he is, will come back down to earth a little bit this season. I see the Vikings as MAYBE making the playoffs IF their quarterback takes a step foward.
With a potentially dominant defense and a running game featuring AP, I can see where you're coming from but top three is pretty hard to digest. They still don't have what people would consider a franchise QB. Had they gone after and gotten Pennington, I would more readily agree with you. But with Tavaris as their QB? Come on now.....put down that glass pipe. On paper, I'm flattered that they would rank the Jets at the top fifty percentile. Come week 5, this ranking will be laughable because we would have either proven that we belong with the big boys or we will be wallowing at a 0-4 start.
even though its pre season rankings, the Jets are the only team with 4 or less wins to be placed in the top 25... that speaks volumes.
I think 16 is fair, our O and D really need to click together before we can get too excited. We could potentially be a playoff contender, but just as easily, if things don't gel early i could see us being an 8-8 team. I think 16 is a fair week one rating, lets see how well the team really plays together this sunday. Im stoked.
Sports Illustrated's Power Rankings New York Jets They've gotten older and firmer. They're putting together something that looks like, well, at least a playoff run. So what makes me nervous about this team? Maybe it's the volume of money spent, the memory about the hollow way the Redskins tried to buy championships. Maybe I'm tired of being poor. We'll probably be better than 16 - but this isn't a bad spot to start the season off after going 4-12. Not to mention, 13-20 are very debatable...
We'll be much better than 16. The difference in attitudes between '07 and '08 is crazy. Last year we were bound to beat the Pats because we had acquired a 28 year old RB and a rotational DE outside of the draft. This year...no one has any kind of faith in the Jets...LOL...the effects of cheap analysis I guess.
16th spot is more than generous starting out. I think we still have a lot to prove - especially on the defensive side of the ball. This needs to be the year that Sutton earns his freaking pay and gets that unit out the door from the start instead of after 7-8 games into the season. If they can do that we'll have a shot at getting to or maybe even cracking that top 10. Otherwise, be happy with our upgrades and let's see how things roll for a couple of games before we leap to conclusions.
