Other than Travis Henry this was probably about as good as we could expect in terms of a trade. If it's for a 4th rounder or less it's a steal. If it's for a 2nd rounder I don't like the deal. 3rd rounder we could get lucky or not.
Damn, Jets gave up a draft pick for him? I'm not really sure how I feel about that. I don't know much about Barlow except that he didn't quite live up to the billing in SF. I would've prefered to give up McCareins or Strait than a draft pick. Let's just hope it wasn't a high pick.
He was pretty terrible as a starter last year though, just 3.3 YPC and just one 100 yard game. Still could be an upgrade over what we have now though.
The 9ers have had a terrible line recently, though ours isn't much better right now so ... Still, he's a pretty big dude, didn't know he was 230+. Meh, whatever, just depends on how high a pick we gave them.
An undisclosed draft pick could easily be conditional based on how many downs the guy plays next year. That's no risk for the 49ers because the number of downs would probably be set low enough that if Barlow was at all decent he makes the threshhold. No risk for the Jets because they'll have no incentive to run Barlow into the ground if he's sucking, they'll just use Houston instead or do a RBBC.
Jets | Barlow acquired from 49ers Sun, 20 Aug 2006 13:28:58 -0700 ESPNews reports the San Francisco 49ers have traded RB Kevan Barlow to the New York Jets.
Here's a guy who has proven he can be a very good NFL RB, he's proved himself better than guys like Duckett and Suggs have.
I hate transactions like this. They don't accomplish much, and it's a potential waste of a draft pick. I don't think there is a noteworthy difference between Houston and Barlow, plus, I'd like to see what we have further. Hopefully he fails his physical.
We can always just trade McCareins or Strait elsewhere (i.e. the failed Suggs deal - they could give us a pick instead for Strait), to get the pick back. As for Barlow I hope it's a condintional pick.
He's actually put up better numbers than Lee Suggs, so as far as the player we're getting, he may be a better move than Suggs. It's just that draft pick.
