Here is ESPN's breakdown of the most heartbreaking loss in the history of each franchise: What is your NFL team's most heartbreaking loss? From '28-3' to the 'Ice Bowl' to 'The Drive' I'll save you the click. Here's what they say about the Green and White: This one is worthy, if you can only pick one, but it's not a slam dunk for me. I would have given strong consideration to the Gastineau roughing penalty on Kosar; Doug Brien blowing 2 FGs against the Steelers; or the 1999 AFCCG against Denver
I go with the Doug Brien game first before that one. That 2011 Steelers game wasn’t as heartbreaking because we got our dicks kicked in immediately and you pretty much knew with Sanchez we weren’t going to be able to come back from that in bad weather (even though he played alright and almost did come back). Herm kneeling to kill two seconds off the clock and lose 2 yards to prevent a long kickoff return to lose in the toughest stadium in the league to kick is still one of the worst coaching decisions I’ve ever seen. And he probably misses without that but the optics of game management are awful.
I’d have to go ‘98 AFCCG against Denver. Had a lead heading into half time, with a very uninspiring Falcon team awaiting us in the Super Bowl. That was the time, and also when I realized this team was cursed.
The prior year AFC Championship Game in Indy. We were up 14-6 and just recovered a fumble deep in Colts territory. A TD would've put them in a really tough situation, but we had to settle for a FG which ended up being our final points of the game. A tough Saints team would've awaited us in the Super Bowl, but Sanchez gifted them two scores in the regular season matchup. I believed we had a shot had we gotten there.
AFCCG against Denver Mud Bowl against Miami My very first heartbreaking loss was the 81 WC game at Shea vs the Bills.
AJ Duhe Game in 82 is probably the one that hurt the most. The Cleveland double overtime game after the 86 season is up there. The Doug Brien game.
Personally it was the Steelers AFC Champ game. I wasn’t around back in the others. The 2015 Week 17 in Buffalo hurt too. 2015 was an up and down team but shitting the bed to Rex against a bad Bills team with win-and-in on the line… As a fan of the NFL since the mid-late 2000’s those are the two that stand out. 2009 not as much, it just seemed like such a long shot with rookie Sanchez
The '98 game against Denver for me. That was the best Jets team I've ever seen and I've been watching them since the very early 80s. They had a 10-0 lead in the third quarter and were, in my opinion, the second best team in all of football that year. I feel supremely confident they would have beaten the Falcons in the Super Bowl. I feel like that's the closest I'll ever come to seeing them winning a Super Bowl in my lifetime.
All very good replies…..all games mentioned qualify. The winner for me after thinking about all of the games would have to be the AFCCG in Denver. Backtoqueens and KW Jetsfan both explained it perfectly. I felt that season was the Jets destiny to win the SB. New retro uniforms, the Vikings were eliminated and the game was in Miami - exactly 30 years later. Up 10-0 (should of been more)….25 minutes to kill. But Martin couldn’t get going, the Jets turned the ball over and the dream died.
1. The Mud Bowl because we got cheated. 2. The 98 team losing to Denver as they would have been a strong favorite to beat Atl. 3. The double OT loss to the Browns.
Hard to choose to many heartbreaks! Mud bowl! Browns 2OT to go to CG Steelers 2004 to go to CG - 2 missed FGs Bills playoff game 81 - down 24-0. Lose on last play Todd INT 2011 steelers loss in CG. Fumble TD on 3rd and forever right before half. There are others that have been mentioned! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Double overtime against the Browns has to be in the top five. Father time and injuries did more damage than the Browns. Losing to the Broncos in the AFC Championship game is another. Turnovers killed us in this one. Those were two of the best teams that we ever had.
Jan 3, 1987 Jets winning AFC divisional play-off vs Browns 20-10 2nd and 24, 3.33 to go Kosar's pass falls incomplete... It's 3rd and 24... wait a minute, there's a flag...looks like it's Gastineau on a late hit...
Not on the level as any of these but going into Seattle (4-12) in 2008 at 9-5 and scoring 3 points in a loss to one of the leagues worst defenses with an offense led by Seneca Wallace was pretty brutal. Then we followed that gem up by losing to Pennington to give them the division.
No doubt Cleveland double OT game, if won they would have been in the final four with the headache Giants on the other side, the city would have been electric with the possibilities, Jets had the game won, Walton played not to lose, cost them the game.
