The New York Jets added more depth to their backfield by signing
Baltimore Ravens halfback Musa Smith on Tuesday.

Terms of the deal weren't available.

The 25-year-old halfback played five seasons with the Ravens.
He started only one game. The 232-pound Smith is big enough
to help out at fullback and has enough running
ability to be a backup running back.

The Jets, who hired former Nebraska and Raiders coach
Bill Callahan to coordinate their running attack,
plan to be more of a running team this season.

Smith has 496 career rushing yards on 132 carries.
He was an unrestricted free agent.

This front office is doing great!

Create competition, add depth and spend money wisely.

If the paper translate to the gridiron, watch out!

I couldnt agree with you more bro the F.O. is spending and bringing in some good players and some very good depth. Smith is a 5 yr RB/FB can play both positions aswell as some special teams and he's a big grinder at 233 LBS. Great depth added at RB.

With T.Jones' struggles last year to get into the endzone, and Leon Washington and Jesse Chatman being pretty small, Musa Smith could be our goal line back.

He will be a solid backup.

He's versatile enough to line up in front of Thomas Jones/Leon Washington and behind Tony Richardson.

From his stats, it looks like he's been effective as a receiver out of the backfield averaging 7 yards a catch.

I'm liking this a lot for goal line situations.

    Very Wisely and Smart Move.
The Depth on the Backfield is very nice.

He's never been used as a goalline back, which is suprising. Musa Smith is actually the exact same size as Willis McGahee. 6'0 232...but Smith's upper body looks a lot bigger.

I'd like to see what he can do as a short yardage power back, and I can definitely see him taking some situational carries away from the lighter Thomas Jones.

So that's Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, Jesse Chatham, Danny Woodhead, and Musa Smith. Wow. There's gonna be some serious competition for the third runningback spot.

Woodhead doesn't have much of a shot at running back. I can see him making the team as a return man, and maybe a developmental slot receiver.

Oh yeah...I forgot about Jehuu. He is the back that is likely effected the most by the Musa Smith signing.

Competition is never a bad thing.

We are probably looking at Jones, Washington and Chatman or Smith on the Active Roster with Caulrick or Woodhead making the PS barring injury or unexpected training camp development.

I just wrote an e-mail to a friend and spent a couple sentences on the Jets.
I told him I think the whole backfield is set barring injuries and trades-
    QB- Clemens, Pennington, Ainge
    RB- Jones, Washington, Chatman
    FB- Richardson, Smith

Caulcrick is headed to the practice squad if he performs well in camp.

I liked him coming out of college and I am very surprised he hasn't done much. I'm curious is they think he will fit in at FB
