Jeremy Green has been an NFL scout for 10 years. Most recently, he was director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns. Now he is a contributor to ESPN Insider/Scouts Inc New York Jets: The Jets were able to get the first-round pick they were seeking and send Abraham where he wanted to go. The Jets entertained moving Abraham to Seattle, but the player was less then thrilled to get involved in a deal that would send him to the Northwest. So what does this mean for the Jets? Well, first off, we need to point out that they lost another very good player on a team with very few playmakers on either side of the ball. You cannot replace a John Abraham immediately, and their pass-rush production will take a big dip. However, it's hard to fault the Jets' philosophy as it pertains to Abraham. Yes, he is a great player, but on the other hand, he has had his share of off-the-field issues. The Jets are a team that is starting over and there is no better way to accomplish that than by acquiring draft picks. The Jets have positioned themselves very nicely right now with three picks in the first 36 of the upcoming draft. They will be able to get three excellent players who should be able to start and compete from the start. With the No. 4 pick, the Jets will now consider OT D'Brickshaw Ferguson or DE Mario Williams. Both players are more than capable of starting from day one. With that extra pick at the bottom of the round (29th overall), the Jets will no doubt be looking at a running back. They will potentially hope to have Laurence Maroney or Joseph Addai on the board at that spot. The Jets will also need to look at the cornerback position at some point early in the draft. The Jets have many different needs and their picks will not only be based on need, but on the best available player theory. The Jets' personnel and coaching staffs will no doubt do their homework. If they stand pat with their current selections, the Jets are going to get themselves three solid players regardless of the needs they look to address Atlanta Falcons: Many people believe the Falcons got the best of this deal. There are a few reasons for concern, though. Don't get me wrong, Abraham is a great player, but he does bring some baggage with him. Nobody other than the league office is supposed to know where he stands in the NFL's substance abuse program. If Abraham were to have an off-the-field incident, could he potentially be suspended? That is something we don't know, but we do know from his past history that the potential for that is out there. Secondly, from a playing standpoint, the Falcons have added another undersized player along their defensive front. This is a defense that was regularly man-handled last season in the trenches. It finished the year ranked 26th in run defense and 31st in rushing average. Abraham gives Atlanta a player who can chase laterally and make plays versus the run, but teams regularly ran down the throat of the Falcons' defense. Abraham has only one real glaring weakness -- he is not stout at the point of attack. He can get engulfed in the run game when teams run right at him. I can't deny that Abraham is an extraordinary athlete. He is an explosive pass rusher who will register double-digit sacks next season. He is a player who can change games. While I applaud the Falcons for landing a "blue chip" defensive player, they will need to play with the lead a lot in 2006. If they don't, this team will continue having trouble stopping the run as it has done nothing to get bigger, tougher or more physical along the defensive front http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/columns/story?columnist=green_jeremy&id=2379896
Thanks for posting that. Woody/Skip is offset with Green/ESPNInsider. Jensen missed this one as well.
"With that extra pick at the bottom of the round (29th overall), the Jets will no doubt be looking at a running back." They didnt think wed go for mangold? We have capable running backs.....
Great post! I agree with scout inc for the most part but I see o-line getting some attention in one of those 3 picks.
I think we are going to look at Mangold if he is off the board then we may turn our sites to Lawson or Carpenter.
Nice posting....He nailed it when he said that the Jets need to stand pat and draft 3 solid players. We need all the help we can get.
You have to take Mangold if he is on the board at 29...cause he will NOT be there at 35. So when I say to myself is 29 and 4 worth 2, I have to think is Super Mario and Mangold worth Leinart? I don't believe so. Mangold at 29 if we still have that pick (which I doubt we will)
Unless Runyan Signs. I now see D-Brick and Mangold picked by the Jets. A RB picked in the 2nd. If neither of those players are there then they might go Wlliams and the another defensive back.
the man love for mangold has to end. It's a rarity that a center ever gets picked in the first round. Mangini is not going to use a 1st round pick on a position that can be improved later in the draft.
IMO this trade benefits both teams. The Jets get a first rounder and loose a player that was disatisfied with the organization. The Falcons get a great DE that gets a new start.
