I'm a huge Lowery fan, have never given up hope on him and think he has lots of talent. Hopefully he can play to my expectations of him...an above average number 3 and eventually 2.
I have bashed Lowery over and over again for being too slow to play man coverage. I'm 100% in favor of him proving me wrong.
I have thought that Lowery has been unfairly bashed on this site. He was in an impossible situation to succeed last year being forced to start before he was ready, opposite a shut down corner with opposing QBs having all day to throw. I feel really good about our secondary this year.
- Big Lowery fan. I think the bashers are out of their minds and aren't grasping the situation he was in last year as a rookie. Bottom line - he's a workaholic that's giving 110% who will have a role in the NFL for a long long time.
I think Lowery was unfairly criticized last year as well. Yes, he was burned. So was Revis his rookie year. He also broke up a hell of a lot of passes. Also, (and this is pretty big, for me at least) he showed that he was very effective in run support. Five forced fumbles is huge! I'm very confident that at the end of the year, between Lowery and Sheppard, Lowery will be the better cornerback.
The problem is that you are expecting him to be something he is not. What we needed was a coach to scheme defenses well enough to make him as effective as he can with the talent he has - Mangini was certainly not that coach, having managed ill-fitting personnel for his schemes about as well as Herm did. He shouldn't be man-covering burner wideouts or 6'7" TEs, because he has neither the size nor the speed to do either effectively. He's a nickel-type corner with excellent closing speed and quickness, and he has very good instincts. Hopefully Rex can make him look like a pro Bowler, even if he isn't.
Taking into consideration that he was a rookie last year drafted in the 4th round, Lowery had an excellent season. I'll take instinctive ball hawking skills over position/field oblivious blazing speed any day. 1 of the factors for our long term success will depend on our ability to build this team through the draft & finding success in the mid-rounds like they did w/other 4th rounders -- Leon Washington, Kerry Rhodes, & Jerricho Cotchery.
lets see, lowery got benched twice and had to give up 8 or 9 touchdowns.. Revis his rookie year was our #1 cornerback and gave up 3 tds all year... Revis had a stud like rookie year, lowery had just a awful year whether you wanna use the rookie card or not
Revis had a stud rookie year, but he didn't have a Top 3 CB shutting down the other side of the field either, like it was the case in Lowery's rookie season. Every rookie CB would have gotten burned with Revis on the other side, the amount of balls he faced was ridiculous. I read somewhere that Lowerys "yards allowed per attempt" was actually quite good, which is good indicator of a CBs performance as it takes into account how many times the ball was thrown his way instead of looking just at the total yards or touchdowns allowed. Lowery has the potential to be a solid starter down the road and should benefit greatly learning from two probowlers.
Well exactly, I have stated all along that I think Lowery is nothing more than a nickel corner. I have been arguing that point with the believers that say he will be a starting CB for us someday, which at this point, I don't see. Again, I'd love it if he proves me wrong.
Please don't try to compare Lowery to Revis. Lowery will NEVER be close to as good as Revis and he'll likely never make a probowl. It's nice that he wants to be great though. Hopefully he can be a good nickel back one day. I think I finally figured out why people want to blow him on here. It's the whole "4th round pick" thing. People want him to be the next Rhodes or Washington. Good luck with that.
You're entitled to your opinion, but in my opinion, that's utter nonsense. He was found out as the season went on - all-but inevitable for a rookie playing such a difficult position. But he had some great moments and should develop into a solid player.
Nowhere is he comparing Lowery to Revis. Even the most simplest minded football fan must take into account the fact that 12 months prior he was playing college ball. Not to mention the obvious fact that Revis was completely blanketing the other WR. I dont have the #s on me, but it couldnt have been too often that a QB was looking at a Revis covered WR to wait & see when he would get open. Dude, give a guy some credit.....he tied for team lead in 5 forced fumbles.
