You'd make me happy if you substituted "may" with "will." Doesn't matter much though, as I see this guy starting FT no later than 4 or 5 games into the season, after the Justin Miller experiment has fully run its course.
I'm just glad to see it possibly happening so quickly. You gotta love our young and talented secondary right now.
Again, I was a fan of Miller finally turning the corner this year and becoming a solid #2. He didn't. Now it's time to make room for Lowery. I'd like to see him start against the Phins. It should be a nice ego boost for him to only have to defend 10 yards downfield on passing plays against Chad.
Lowery is a good player and even if he doesn't start week 1 i think he will eventually take over the second starting CB role a couple games into the season.
shows how much bullshit the combine workouts are when you consider our first round pick had the best combine and probably won't start and Lowery who fell in the draft because of his combine numbers is now starting.
I wouldn't quite go that far in discounting the combine results. It's pretty well documented that Lowery was coming off of an injury when he ran. So his slow time is not representative of his actual speed. Gholston is nothing but a beast and will display that on the field as soon as he learns what to do. He's thinking too much now and not reacting. With enough reps at OLB it will soon become instinct for him.
I hope he starts, good players have to play. Sooner the better, no better way to get your feet wet. Who else is so important that they have to start over him at CB? I'm sure if Miller can get and stay healthy we're going to need him at some point over 16 games.
In general I agree with you, but Gholston lost a lot of time in camp because of the college commitments and he is learning a brand new position. Not a good comparison IMO.
I'm glad the coaching staff is willing to play the best players, not just the highest draft picks, biggest salary guys, etc. Lowery has looked great this preaseason and has definitely earned the right to be the #2 CB. With Revis & Lowery as starters and Coleman & Poteat as backups, I feel pretty good about our secondary this season.
Everybody here is willing to give Gholston too much of a break. Yeah, he missed some camp because of when his class graduated. So did a lot of other NFL players. I understand he may not know all of his coverage assignments and I understand why that will take some time. What I don't understand is why he doesn't seem to ever get any pressure in the pass rush. Missing camp has absolutely nothing to do with that and I'm not seeing him get double teamed. Pace is at times and still seems to beat it. Pass rushing is supposed to be his strongest point and I am still waiting to see some sign of it.
IMO the missed time and learning a new position has affected his whole game. It's hard enough for a rookie to adjust to the NFL - add on a lot of missed time and learning a new position and you have an uphill battle. As another poster said in another thread, Long is doing worse than Gholston and he's learning a new position as well.
Wouldn't it be great to have one of those CB tandems that dominate over a period of time? We've never had that, whenever we've had one really good one the other side has been a problem.
