We are all salivating over the top Edges and WRs that we may take in rounds 1 and 2. But what about doubling up? Should we take two WRs, and if so, who do you hope we snag as the second? What about a second Edge, and who would it be? Any appetite for doubling up on tight ends in the 3rd or 4th to develop behind Uzomah and Conklin? Any other positions you would consider taking two? My thoughts: I'm a fan of doubling up at WR, DE, and TE, even if it means we skip drafting an LB and DB. 1. We need two solid WRs. If we trade for one before the draft, then let's only draft one. Otherwise, I'm liking Alec Pierce as the second choice (in addition to Wilson/Williams/London/Burke/Olave), even though we'd probably have to use a high pick (mid-second-round) to get him. The dude was highly under-utilized in college and could be an underrated gem, even at a relatively expensive second round pick. 2. We need two solid Edges. This defense is all about getting to the QB. We need lots of horses with fresh legs. I would love to get Nik Bonitto in the third (in addition to whatever first-round Edge we nab). 3. I would also like to see us finish cleaning house on our tight end room. This offense needs good tight ends, especially as Zach develops, and last year we were terrible there top to bottom. CJ and Tyler are great, but there will be injuries, and we need good backups for Zach while injuries heal. Also, CJ and Tyler won't be here forever, and this is a good draft in which we can start developing our TEs of the future. I think Cade Otten and Jelani Woods are both exciting prospects that may be had in the 4th. Maybe we can pick up Isaiah Likely in the 3rd, but I suspect we'll need our third round picks for other purposes. All this doubling-up probably means we might have to skip drafting some other position(s) that people get excited about. But I don't think JD plans to draft a DB or LB, regardless of how excited some on this board get about that. Connor's podcast made a pretty persuasive case that it simply doesn't make sense to invest much draft capital in those spots given our defensive scheme, and that we already have workman-like DBs and solid LBs who will be just fine if we have the dominant defensive line that this scheme requires. Obviously, if JD feels the need to get LBs or DBs, then doubling up at WR/Edge/TE isn't realistic. But Connor's comments resonated with me, so I'm a fan of doubling up.
The only position I would consider doubling up is Edge. It increases your odds of hitting on at least one (the position has a high bust rate), and if you hit on both the defense is set up well for a decade.
I was all in for doubling up at TE but we signed two FA's instead. I would go WR with Olave and Doubs. All depends on trade backs now though, I wouldn't be taking Olave @10
If we double up I hope it’s at Both WR and edge. Tier 1 - WR I want one of Burks/Williams/Wilson/Olave Tier 2 - WR I want Pierce/Austin/Shakir Tier 1 - Edge I want KT/JJ/Walker/Hutchison Tier 2 - Edge I want Karlaftis/Mafe/Bonitto
