I believe the right calls were made on the 1st and 1. Mangini's goal was to give his team confidence that the OL could dominate the LOS - and do it against ANY defense. I only wish they didn't lose on 3rd down and could have tried again on 4th down, where I would have liked to see them run.

The fact that the Pats stopped them is a major disappointment, in it shows we can't yet dominte the LOS against the Pats.

Mangini's statement was we will dominate you. The fact that it didn't work may point to him not knowing his team.

However, to say that the calling was not agressive is wrong. Calling 3 runs was the least conservative thing he could have done. You can blame him for not evaluating the LOS matchups properly, but not for lack of agresiveness.

I also think people are not taking into account that the Patriots are one of the most disciplined teams in the NFL. If the Jets had run one of those bootleg pass plays no one was getting open. And they were to close to throw a fade. The Patriots discipline and gap control is the best in the league they were not going to give you anything on those plays. The best bet is to try and run the ball straight ahead.

I agree with you and I think you make a good case for arguments 2 and 3. But by definition, if he did not evaluate the LOS matchups properly, doesn't that make it a fact that it was the wrong call?

our skill position guys suck! Thats the reason we arent elite. Did you watch the cowboy game yesterday? did you see marion babrber run? We have nothing close to that. Did you see Terrel Owens running routes and scoring TDs? We have nothing cloe to that.

Not bad agruments, but honestly why trade for Favre if your not going to use him. That position we were in on Sunday was a Brett Favre situation and he should have been used. Mangini has to adjust his coaching to Favre because if he doesn't the team won't be successful on offense.

I believe that you are largely right here, as I said in numerous posts yesterday.

But Mangini had to take this position with his OL in order to get them to get better. Listen to Mangold today. They spent Monday going over every mistake.

Callahan has been described as being meticulous about every single technique, down the each lineman's hand placement in specific situations. It is one thing to impress the players with your attention to detail -- but they will not appreciate what that detail means until they come out of dogfight and see the mistakes made.

It is important for the OL to understand the difference between where they really are and where they want to be. This field goal instead of a touchdown is a critical lesson.

I think that if Mangini and company had not forced the issue here, they would not have had the chance they have now to progress.

Of course the $64 million question is what does the OL do with their newfound knowledge of their shortcomings...?

It doesn't matter a damn who your skill players are if the OL can't get three yards on a run straight ahead whenever they have to have it.

Without reliable blocking no skill player has a chance in hell.

Ya know, it worked just fine in the 4th quarter when they scored pretty easily

I saw Marion Barber have no holes like Jones did at the goal line last night, and he powered his way into the end zone... his line did not do their job opening the holes and yet he scores a TD. hmmmmmm

skill position players need to be talented as well.

OK, I'll defend the play calling. At the goal line in Miami and last week against the Pats. it did not work and Mangini learned, the next time Favre passes to Stuckey. They improved the playcalling and I defend that!

OK, we should know now that Jones ain't Bettis and use him accordingly.

It's arrogance to think anyone can dominate the Pats D line which has been one of the best against the Run for about 4 or 5 years now.

We got a HOF QB... how can we not put the ball in his hands at least ONCE during that sequence... that is very frustrating.

This is an argument that goes on every year. Of course you need a solid O-line. But you just like many others before you , make it seem like it doesnt matter whose running the ball. And its nonsense. And others have made it seem like any WR will do. That is also nonsense. Some WRs run better patterns than others, and get open more than others! our Skill players are lacking. If you look at the elite teams in the league, we simply do not compare. We never do! Watch the San Diego game this week. Their guys will make big plays- LT , Gates along with Chambers and Jackson....and we will have TJ, and cotch and maybe a Baker sighting once in a while. This is the biggest problem for the Jets and it always has been!
