This is from the daily news. His move freed 1.7M, making Barlow in 2006 not cost terribly much (800K net result if you factor in Martin's latest). While the article says it helped with Barlow (it did), what it really did was allow the Jets to get Barlow AND be able to move on a DT if they wish. This guy is the ultimate team player.
What an amazing guy. Curtis was never a world beater, but if he's not a first ballot hall of famer for what he brings to the organization then I don't know who is.
What a class act! Its sad to see him go out like this, but I say, I'd rather remember him at his best, than to see be half the runner he was. They should put him in the Hall now.
What a great guy... Its not often that you see such a superstar in the NFL with such a great personality...
Does this indicate that we may be about to sign a NT or is this just a "just in case" sort of thing? As for Curtis, I really hope we keep in attached to the organization somehow, assuming he does retire. He is the kind of person that can really solidify the culture of an entire clubhouse. (in a good way, obviously)
I think when Martin's career is officially over, the Jets should definitely retire his number. You could not ask a player to give more to a team than Curtis Martin has.
It was pure speculation on my part that Martin was willing to take a cut to fit Barlow in, and not crush the rest of our cap. What we do with the savings was speculation on my part.
It'd be nice if when he retires... comes back as the RB coach or somethin. We need him on this team no matter what!
You just dont find guys like Curtis Martin in the league anymore. Everything he has done for the team is just amazing and I truly love the guy. Spectacular man.
Anyone have an educated guess on the following scenarios??? Assuming that Martin doesn't play this year, what are the salcap implications if... -He retires this year during the season (without going on IR)? *My guess is that the rest of his uncounted bonus accelarates on this years cap. Not sure though how much that we would have to account for and how much cap space we actually have at this point. -He goes on IR this year and retires next year before June 2007? *Under this scenario, my understanding is that a portion of his cap hit would count towards the 07 and 08 cap year. Not sure what that cap hit 07/08 split would be. -He goes on IR this year and retires next year after June 2007? *I would assume if the above scenario is correct, that his entire cap hit goes on the 07 cap vice a split between 07/08. Once again, not sure what the $$$ is in any of these scenarios. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
One of the best players in New York Jets history...Low-key guy who did his talking on the field... His traits and attitude are 2nd to none...Great guy and true team player.
Retiring this season without going on IR assumes he'll be on the active roster... not going to happen. He could retire while he's on the PUP though and that may be what you means. We can spread his cap hit, bonus wise over 2 yrs, which would leave his hit the same this year (in terms of the bonus), and next year that the accelerated hit. It would not be forced into this season. If he retires prior to June 2007, we have the option to spead it out over 2007/2008 if we wish, or counting it all in 2007. You can do the spread out thing prior to June 2007 for 1 player a season. However, he counts on your cap until June 2007 even though he's gone. A lot of the assumptions below are not right. He's not going to retire this year, because he can go on IR and get 475K, which I think the Jets would be glad to give him. Look for him to go onto PUP and try to play. If he can not, then look for him to go to IR and announce a retirement but do like Chrebet and not have it official until June 2007.
Thanks for the info... Any idea how much bonus $$$ still needs to be accounted for on his contract? (I assume that the newly re-negotiated one does not add additional bonus $)
