Coaching changes: Quarterbacks Coach/ Assistant Offensive Coordinator: Jeff Jagodzinksi- BC?s ex-head coach, coached the great Matt Ryan Defensive Line Coach : Clarence Brooks- defensive line coach from Baltimore, used to working with Ryan and the 3-4 Assistant Defensive Line Coach: Jeff Comissiong- BC d-line coach, coached the top 2 NT prospects this year in B.J. Raji and Ron Brace Linebackers Coach: Jeff FitzGerald- Bangles linebacker coach, but spent 4 years with Baltimore and coached Lewis, Scott, and Suggs. Also he knows Ryan well Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach, Nutrition Coordinator: Doug Davis- Ohio State strength and conditioning, Ohio State always produces beasts in the weight room Free Agents resigned: Mike Nugent 3 years 3 million Reason: He?s a good kicker and was only getting better. He deserves much more money but it is unclear how he will recover from his injury. If he can return to his old form he will be very welcomed back to the team CJ Mosley 3 years 2 million Reason: Great back up and a solid player for our rotation. No need to drop him. Although he may never take over for Ellis when his age gets the best of him, he offers plenty of value as a role player. Cody Spencer 1 year 700,000 Reason: He a decent back up and special teams player. He?s an inexpensive back up who is familiar with the Jets and the 3-4 Ahmad Carroll 1 year 700,000 Reason: Special teams player, He had 2 FF and 20 tackles good enough to warrant another year here Total 2009 spending: Estimated 3.1 million Free agents let walk: Barton (solid starter but he really does belong at 4-3 OLB, not 3-4 ILB), Franks (Keller is the man, no need to keep him around), Richardson (great player but he?s 37, time to go younger in the draft), Chatman (he touched the ball 5 times all year, no need to resign him), Poteat (I love Poteat but with the emergence of Lowery as the #3 CB we don?t need him anymore), Feely (Nugent stays, I?d love to sign Feely and let him and Nugent battle it out but we don?t have that much cap space), Law (walkers aren?t allowed on the field apparently), Reed(I don?t even know who he is, lol) Retirement: Favre Savings 13 million Cuts: David Barrett savings 3.17 million Reason: He isn?t even the #3 CB anymore. He really needs to go David Bowens savings 2.6 million Reason: I love him as a quality back up ILB and OLB but honestly there are many more ways in which the Jets can use 2.6 million Chris Baker savings 2.1 million Reason: Keller has been amazing he replaces Baker as the starter and eliminates the need to keep him and his 2.1 million dollar contract Total Savings through cuts: 7.87 Restructures: Coles (due 6 million), Ellis (due 4.65 million), Coleman (due 3 million), Woody (due 5.6 million), Fanaca (due 7 million), D Brick (due 2.92 million) Total savings unknown but should be between 2-5 million Trade: Bryan Thomas to the Denver for a 3rd round pick Reason: The jets do it: Thomas is expensive (due 1.9 million) He doesn?t produce that much (5.5 sacks)and we have Gholston waiting in the wings and Thomas is only holding him back. Addition by subtraction Denver does it: A new 3-4 team who needs to change at almost every position. Although Thomas isn?t the best 3-4 OLB he is experienced and can start immediately. Denver currently is 34 million under the cap and that could raise to 50 million after some expected cuts occur. This trade doesn?t cost much for Denver and they are able to obtain a starter for just a 3rd rounder. With this trade Denver can now look in the draft for a NT (Raji) or ILB (Maualuga)instead of having to pick up Orakpo or Brown. Even trade for both teams Jets save money and get to start their top 10 pick and Denver gets a starter for cheap Total savings: 555,000 Total savings through trades, cuts, restructures, retirement, and non-resigning: 23.425 -26.425 million putting us 6.8-9.8 million under the cap Signing: Leon Washington 5 years 10 million Reason: We need to lock up Washington in the worst way. Julius Jones received a contract of 4 years worth 11.8 million (2.95 a year) so this contract seems fair considering both players were back ups but Jones carried more times (164 carries last year in Dallas Washington had 76 carries last year) however Leon's value as a returner gives him more money. The contract will progressively increase in amount owed so hopefully next year while we are in some cap trouble it can work out so that he will only be due 600,000-1 million Channing Crowder 5 years 28 million Reason: According to http://www.kffl.com/player/11217/NFL Crowder is pissed off that Miami hasn?t resigned him yet and he?s looking to leave. Keith Brooking (a player who gathers up similar stats to Crowder) signed a 7 year contract worth 41million. With the way the contract will be structured Crowder will only be owed 700,000-1 million next year. Gholston, Harris, Crowder, Pace the best linebacker core in the NFL for years to come Jabari Greer 4 years 11 million According to: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=41550 Greer is the 23rd best CB in the NFL last year. A combo of Him and Revis will be scary for QBs. Also Greer is a former college track star something Ryan is used to working with considering in Baltimore he worked with Washington one of the fastest players in the NFL. Buffalo will likely not resign Greer because they have McGee and McKelvin already. Greer had 21 PBU 4 Ints and 84 tackles in the last 2 seasons. I see a ton of potential in this kid. His contract will probably suck up 600,000- 800,000 next year David Carr 1 year 1 million This guy was a 1st overall pick you got stuck with one of the worst teams in football with the worst o-line in NFL history. In his rookie year Carr was sacked 76 times!!!! The Jets are a much better team and if Carr can get back to his full potential this signing will be totally worth it. If it doesn?t work out it?s only 1 million lost. George Foster 2 years 1.5 million Foster is a former starting RT for Denver. He can play tackle or guard. He will be a very solid back up for the Jets o-line and a possible cheaper replacement for Woody or Moore is he can prove himself Total estimated 2009 spending in free agency: 4 million
*** Note this draft isn?t the most sexy or probably your favorite but it address every need the Jets currently have after a strong FA. Before the draft the Jets biggest draft needs are FS, #2 OLB, FB, and #2 TE. Other than these positions the Jets have no immediate need to upgrade these positions. Also the 2010 draft will provide the NFL with 3 great QBs (Bradford (top 5), Tebow(top 25), and McCoy (1st round)) all of which could be drafted if the Carr project doesn?t work. Not many WR?s or RB?s available, this could be a problem if Coles? (32 in 2010) and Jones? (31 in 2010) age start to slow them down but it?s unlikely, I feel that they have 2-3 good seasons left, so finding their replacement for their anticipated retirement isn?t a major need, yet. And as a replacement at DE there are many guys who fit the mold of a great 3-4 DE especially Carlos Dunlap (6?6 290 from Florida). He will be Ellis? replacement. Some other possible 3-4 DEs in 2010 are Vince Oghobaase (6?6 310 Duke), Al Woods (6?5 315 LSU). And if we want someone to work into a rotation with Jenkins in 2010 the beast Terrence Cody will be available (6?5 365 from Alabama). Thus the potential strength at needed positions in 2010 eliminates the need of drafting replacements for older players now, especially considering the older players (Jones, Coles, and Ellis) are still producing. Draft: 1st round: Louis Delmas FS (5?11 196 from Western Michigan) Ok before everyone freaks out think about this. Moore had a terrible senior bowl and his draft value dropped. Rhodes is often limited due to the fact that he must make up for the poor play of Elam or Smith. Delmas is a big hitter but also provides a lot in coverage (310 tackles and 12 picks as a 4 year starter). Delmas will allow Rhodes more freedom on the field, allowing Rhodes to reach his maximal potential. A safety is a major priority for this draft and it is address here in the 1st round in a high risk high reward pick. 2nd round (from NO): Kenny Britt WR (6?4 215 from Rugters) The Jets tallest receiver is Brad Smith at 6?2. Britt is 6?4, although he may not be the fastest WR in this draft his height alone is what excites me. Britt needs to work on his game for a while but this is perfect because he can take over for Coles considering he is now on the wrong side of 30. Until then Britt will be a red zone threat and weapon. 2nd round (Jets): Clay Matthews OLB (6?3 240 USC) The Jets cut Bowens to open up cap space and now have no quality back up or rotation player for OLB. Matthews can play both OLB and ILB in a 3-4. He?s a strong, tough, and a leader that will help the Jets from a Special team stand point and be a very valuable rotation player. Remember Leon is a rotation player and he has a huge impact on this team. 3rd round (Denver): Jasper Brinkley ILB (6?2 275 South Carolina) Yea thats right a line backer who weighs 275 and he runs an estimated 4.75. This kid will be a beast in the run game and like Matthews will just be a rotation player and a special teamer but as the Pats have shown, solid depth keeps your starters fresh allowing them to be more active. This kid will ruin people in the 3-4. 4th round (Wash): Brannan Southerland FB (6?0 240 Georgia) We let Richardson walk and we pick up the best blocking FB in the draft. Ryan plans to run the ball heavily and in order to do that we need some solid run blocking this kid defiantly provides that. In 2006 this kid carried the ball 128 times and racked up 8 TDs, so he may provide some help in goal line situations as a power running back. If you still don?t like this pick please watch this clip of him blocking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VhmOJ8kpF8 5th round: Kevin Hubbard P (who cares lol) Reggie Hodges licks nuts (42.8 average out of 44 punts 14 in the 20 (31%)) Hubbard has improved each year at school he gets great hang time on punts, has never has had an attempt blocked and averages 45 yards a punt. With Westoff coaching him I?m sure this kid will be sick. Also when your team is based off a strong defense (which the Jets will be) the running game and field position are key, making the position of punter much more valuable. 6th round: Davon Drew TE (6?4 256 ECU) Keller handles the pass catching portion of the TE position but a solid blocker is really needed, that?s what Drew provides. Also at 6?4 he provides some extra height as another red zone target to go along with Britt. According to www.walterfootball.com Drew is expected to be drafter in the 4th or 5th so if he is gone by now I would draft Dan Gronkowski TE (6?6 255 Maryland) same as drew a tall red zone target who will primarily be a blocking TE. 7th round: P.J. Hill RB (5?11 233 Wisconsin) Jones has good size 215 but he really isn?t a power back and we all know Washington isn?t either. This has hurt us a bit in Red Zone situations in the past to fix this problem the Jets draft Hill will fill that role of a power short yardage running back. In 3 years at Wisconsin Hill totaled 3,942 yards and 42 TDs. Hill will never be a starter or will take over for Jones when he retires but he will be valuable in the power running game which Brandon Jacobs has shown the NFL can be very helpful. 2009 Roster: (Bold indicates new additions) QB: 1) Carr, 2) Clemens RB: 1) Jones, 2) Washington, 3) Hill FB: Southerland WR: 1) Coles, 2) Cotchery, 3) Britt, 4) Smith, 5) Stuckey TE: 1) Keller, 2) Drew/Gronkwski LT: 1) Ferguson, 2) Foster, 3) Hunter LG: 1) Faneca, 2) Turner C: 1) Mangold, 2) Turner RG: 1) Moore, 2) Turner RT: 1) Woody, 2) Foster LE: 1) Ellis, 2) DeVito NT: 1) Jenkins, 2) Pouha RE: 1) Coleman, 2) Mosley LOLB: 1) Gholston, 2) Matthews ILB: 1) Crowder, 2) Brinkley, 3) Spencer ILB: 1) Harris, 2) Brinkley, 3) Spencer ROLB: 1) Pace, 2) Matthews CB: 1) Revis, 2) Greer, 3) Lowery, 4) Coleman, 5) Carroll SS: 1) Delmas, 2) Smith SS: 1) Rhodes, 2) Smith K: Nugent P: Hubbard KR: Washington PR: Washington Coaching ? Coles is always bitching about money. I dont see him restructuring. Bryan Thomas for a third is just not going to happen. I dont want David Carr on this team. I'll go with unknowns like Clemens and Ratliff if that was my choice. I want Leftwich. Delmas in the first? Thats a big reach for him in a weak safety class to begin with. I'd rather got, CB, WR, DT, DE, QB or LB before I go safety in the first. With Taylor Mayes staying in school and William Moore performing poorly this just isnt a strong class for a safety. Delmas if you ask me is the best of an average at best bunch.
Impressive work...I would LOVE jags as our QB coach, and Im also a big believer that given protection, david carr is a quality starter. Real good job all around Martin
I agree with everything except Tebow. He's a 2nd or 3rd Rounder. Nobody is impressed with his arm. Probably won't even be a QB in the NFL.
Certainly a lot of work put into this. Unfortunately I stopped reading after seeing an idea of re-signing Mike Nugent to a 3yr $3 million contract.
I think Hill will go earlier than the 7th round. A Hill and Washington tandem would maybe be good in a couple years.
Faneca and Woody are coming off solid seasons they would laugh in the face of any restructuring requests. Coles also bitched last year to get this year's $7 million salary guaranteed and won't restructure. Noone with the slightest clue about football would trade a 3rd for BT. I have also heard alot of Dolphin fans say Crowder sucks balls, and I'd rather have Clemens start than Carr.
:rofl2::lol::breakdance: EDIT: Oh I'm sorry, I misunderstood. We give the Denver a third rounder to take Bryan Thomas. My bad, that's a solid trade.
We should not get ANY of the free agent QBs. None of them are worth it. Definitely yes to re-signing CJ Mosley but fuck Nugent - kick him to the curb.
losing coles doesn't save us any money....unless he agrees to restructure his contract towards a release or trade...it is not worth it to lose him/buy a 3rd rd pick for 6 mil thomas is not worth a 3rd to anyone...the broncos could draft a player better than thomas in rd 3...he might could catch a 5th from a transitioning team david carr sucks...and george foster is a false start machine and not very talented i would be pissed if he took vet min to come to our team i wouldn't be surprised if brandon moore was traded or released to create space if he doesn't restructure...
At a glance not to bad. I like most of the coaching calls. AFA the players, 3m is too much for Nuge. He is still a work in progress. Can't cut Thomas until we find a guy who can play behind him.
quite possibly one of the most thorough and intuitive threads I've seen. I agree with all of the coaches you mentioned, I actually posted a thread and had Brooks and Fitzgerald on it. Regarding the cuts. I disagree with cutting Baker (allows the offense to utilize the best double-tight end set in the league, and he is one of the most consistent hands), Carroll was horrendous whereas Poteat can produce (Poteat is a veteran, can tackle, and play dime). Mike Nugent also doesnt deserve a 3 year extension he deserves a 1 million/1 yr contract, perhaps with incentives, because hes coming off of injury. Bryan Thomas to Detroit, Browns, Broncos, are all possible as they all lack a OLB. Thomas is awful because he's unmotivated, and isn't aggressive. His departure will give us much needed money. Your Free Agency was solid. Your draft was awful. 1st round: Louis Delmas FS (5?11 196 from Western Michigan), possibly the worst safety i've seen on film. Patrick Chung, Rashad Johnson, or Sean Smith are all better athletes, mentally and physically. I like Kenny Britt, but you shouldve picked up Ron Brace or Clint Sintim with the other. I agree with the rest of your picks except the 7th round pick should go to a speed receiver/return specialist IMO. Again. Excellent Job.
Coles was 'bitching' because he wanted an extension, not because he wanted more money. No way I would ever want Carr on this team. I'd like to see Baker and Coles back next season though.
i wouldnt call 7 sacks, each, solid seasons. Woody is understandable because he has played every position on OLine in his career, Faneca, there is no excuse. Faneca is great at the run game, but 7 sacks for a player of his experience is inexcusable. whereas mangold, brick, moore had 2 apiece.
