Hey, I just wanted to make this thread because sometimes I see these theories and ideas that are thrown around that don't actually make much sense logically. I'm not saying all jets fans believe them, but it seems like most do and I want to show people why some of these rationals don't make sense. 1.) The Jets are a rebuilding team It might sound weird to think that the Jets aren't a rebuilding team, but they just aren't in the midst of a rebuild. A rebuilding team is a team like the Titans or the Raiders from two years ago, a team that has no cornerstone players for which they can build their franchise around. The Jets have a plethora of players they can build around in Wilkerson, Richardson, Harrison, Decker, and Mangold. Wilkerson was ranked the best run stuffing 3-4 DE by PFF and is considered by most the 2nd at his position while Sheldon Richardson is blossoming into a star. Mangold was ranked the best center by PFF in every statistical category and still probably has a solid 4-5 years left in him. Eric Decker is also extremely underrated by fans, even with an injured hamstring he put up 962 yards, which is more than Holmes and Braylon ever had on the Jets. Rebuilding teams don't have the nucleus that the Jets have. 2.) John Idzik was a poor drafter I expect to be hammered for this, but John Idzik wasn't a bad drafter. In 2013 he drafted the best player in the entire draft (Sheldon Richardson) and people automatically give all the credit to Rex because it was a defensive pick, which I find asinine. If you're going to blame Idzik for the misses, you must give him credit for his successful picks and not just assume Rex made the only good pick. The Dee Milliner pick has been looked poorly on, but I still don't think it was a bad pick. The kid missed ONE game his entire college career so to say he is injury prone prior to the draft didn't make sense. Also, transitioning to DB from college to the NFL is maybe the hardest position to do it with the exception of QB. Patrick Peterson was awful his first year, Darqueze Dennard rarely played for the Bengals this year, and only now is Dre Kirkpatrick starting to play at a high level. Kyle Fuller also ended up not rating that highly and Justin Gilbert was awful this year for the Browns. This leads me to Pryor, who is EXTREMELY underrated by the fans. He was playing completely out of position and STILL ranked higher than HaHa Clinton-Dix by PFF. Not every rookie is going to be Earl Thomas out the gate, they need time. Jace Amaro seems to be a great pick as well and we obviously can't judge Dex McDougle and Shaq Evans as they are hurt. I understand Idzik hasn't hit on a lot of lower round picks, but they need time to develop, that's why they were low round picks. Also, not every pick is a hit, just two years ago Ozzie Newsome drafted two players that don't play in Matt Elam and Arthur Brown in the first and second round respectively. This is obviously a moot point because Idzik is gone, but the talent that has been brought in through the draft hasn't been bad. 3.) Rex put out a good defense last year without a shutdown corner 23rd. That's what the Jets were last season in terms of scoring defense. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the point of a defense is to not allow the opposing team to score, which Rex's defense haven't been able to do since 2009-2010. The season before this one the Jets were 18th in scoring defense as well, which is still bottom half. This past season, according to DVOA (Defense-Adjusted Value over Average) the Jets were the 21st ranked defense. The defense is not very good right now and it is because of a lack of secondary, which brings me to my next point... 4.) The Jets shouldn't bring back Revis if he is open to a reunion I don't fully understand why Jets fans wouldn't want to bring back Revis. Do I dislike the guy after what he did? Absolutely. Would I forgive him if he came back? Yes. At the end of the day, Revis is the best cornerback in football. Sherman will only cover the left side of the field, but Revis has no fear of following the #1 WR on the field. Revis will make our defense ACTUALLY good as our defensive line will have .5 more seconds to potentially rush the passer, which makes a worlds difference. Also, Dee Milliner has shown flashes of what he could be in this league and having Revis to help him and McDougle would be great. A pairing of Revis and Milliner could really be great in the future. I understand the fear of Revis's age, but Rashean Mathis this year played at an extremely high level this year for the Lions at 34. Ultimately, Revis will play longer than most CBs in this league because he is so great with his technique. I think if Revis is willing to come the Jets, we should seriously consider paying him. 5.) Marcus Mariota shouldn't be the pick if he is at the board at #6 I've seen this debate constantly on the forum and it seems kinda silly to me. Hypothetical situations about trading with the Eagles (which by the way is total smokescreen, anyone with half a brain could see that. It won't happen) if Mariota is on the board at #6 just don't make sense to me. If a franchise QB is sitting on your lap, you take him. I understand the concerns about the system, as I initially had them, but when I see Mariota play I see a player with immense potential. Sure, he's a runner, but he also has great passing ability. He has good arm mechanics, great velocity, and is an accurate passer. He has a good feel for pressure in the pocket and has shown some glimpses of going through reads. He will need work, but he definitely has the potential to be a franchise QB. 6.) The Jets are far away from competing for a playoff berth 10. That's the number of losses the Jets had against above .500 teams. Not to mention they lost twice to the Super Bowl champs. This is a young team that is growing and they have a great core. If they use their salary cap space wisely and draft well, the stars could align and the Jets could fight for a wildcard spot. Look, I'll give you an example. Let's say at pick #6 Mariota and Winston are gone, but the Jets snag Amari Cooper. Geno's play improves with the addition of Gailey (Geno should play better in a spread), White plays great for a rookie, Amaro improves, and Oday Aboushi improves. Decker is fully healthy and Ivory is still a great back. Also, Shaq Evans will be back. There isn't much reason to think the offense won't improve. (Should also be stated that Geno had the 4th highest QBR for the last 4 games of the season. Threw 6 TDs and 2 INTs). On the defensive side, we will improve the secondary, Pryor will look better in his 2nd season, Richardson will improve, Wilkerson will improve, and we will return Dee Milliner and see what Dex McDougle can bring to the table. Also, the new coaching staff can't be understated. Infusing the disciplined instilled by Bowles can only help this team and I think it can definitely result in more wins this next season. We aren't that far off. These are a couple of things I wanted to get off my chest. Thanks
good post. I don't agree with everything, but it is still well done. I am sure you can breathe easier now, lol
Those aren't myths. They are opinions. But I'm happy that you have a place to unpack all of that emotional baggage.
As Jetaho just mentioned, everything you provided is strictly opinionated - nothing you said really holds much truth. But good topic to begin discussions so you got that going for you.
Well, we ARE rebuilding. We just started last year. It hasn't been the most impressive one so far but it IS a rebuild. This isn't a contending team. We have WAY too many holes to fill (that's what she said) to compete with the rest of our own division. And Idzik does suck at drafting. One or two good picks does not excuse a crapton of bad picks.
2 and 5 are opinion. The quality of Idzick's drafts is the outcome, not what could have been. Until Millner can stay on the field and play well with consistency the pick is not a good one. Mariota looks just as good now as Geno did before coming to the NFL. Just like Geno he has not played in a pro offense and proven that he can be successful. Taking him at # 6 is a risk. There ate a lot of good and even great players available at that spot that have a much higher floor than Mariota.
This year's FA signings should tell us if we are in a compete now mold or we are looking to build for the next two years. I am one of the fans that believes with a proven QB and some fa signings we are close to getting to the promise land.
Oh, Geno played great his last 4 games? High QB rating? Let's just surround him with some more talent? Hmmmm where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, 2013 is calling. They want their bullshit back. _
Come on man, I know you don't like Mariota but he just won the Heisman. How can you honestly compare him to Geno, other than the fact that they both ran spreads in college? He is a risk, I agree with that, but everyone is a risk in the draft. Also, why are we concerned with floors with the 6th overall pick? That seems like something you worry about in the later rounds.
I don't see how number 2 can be looked at properly without at least another year to see how things pan out. I also disagree with number 5. If anything I would do the opposite of you and draft like 4 QB's. It sounds nuts but Brady was a 6th round pick. take a few, let them compete, hopefully one sticks. I do realise this is unrealistic but there is some sense to it. Side note: how is there not a specific wall in here for literally the purpose of just blowing off steam? just a page to unleash lengthy rants without cluttering actual discussions and get the frustration out. By no means do I mean this about OP. This was a well thought out and written post. though I don't agree with all points, I must give respect when its due.
Fuck John Idzik and fuck his shitty draft last year. 12 picks and he passed on Teddy and Carr and he didn't get a talented WR in the most talented WR class in memory. Fuck John Idzik with a fully inflated football. _
Comparing Mariota with Geno is just lazy. Mariota is 10x the player Geno was. Mariota was the real deal in college. Geno was a mirage. Mariota is a taller, more talented, more athletic, more accurate, has a quicker release, is a better runner, is a better leader and most importantly has a football IQ that dwarfs Geno's. Other than that they are the same. _
It boggles my fuckin mind that people can still sit here today and say Idzik was not a bad drafter. Sheldon Richardson? Are you fuckin kidding me?! Yeah, let's purposely ignore all of the other guys he passed on to draft all the other studs we have. 12 picks last year! 12! Lmao
This is my take on your bullet points: 1.) The Jets are a rebuilding team : Not a myth. 2.) John Idzik was a poor drafter: Not a myth 3.) Rex put out a good defense last year without a shutdown corner: Half and half. 4.) The Jets shouldn't bring back Revis if he is open to a reunion: You ain't got a fucking clue. 5.) Marcus Mariota shouldn't be the pick if he is at the board at #6: THIS is a myth [or opinion, or whatever]. FIRST ONE. GOOD JOB. 6.) The Jets are far away from competing for a playoff berth: Not a myth I will spare the gory little details about these, and leave them at that.
