Reporters are grumbling about boring interviews and alphabetical depth charts. Without a single loss on the books, the atmosphere around the Jets is already sheer misery. Which means the first season under new coach Eric Mangini is going just swimmingly. What, training camp is supposed to be a Disney Cruise? Singing and dancing, handstands and pizza parties? Mangini inherited an awful, undisciplined team that walked all over Herm Edwards last season. The tough-guy approach is unusual for a rookie coach, but it's the way to go. That some players are uncomfortable is the best news that could have come out of this training camp. The Jets are going to be terrible. They have a quarterback who may or may not be able to throw the ball and a running back who may or may not have already retired. Three wins, four wins, it doesn't matter. Mangini has one priority for this year, and that's to set some kind of identity for the Jets, to make this rudderless franchise known for something other than Fireman Ed. He is shooting for Bill Belichick instead of Jim Fassel. And that's a bad thing? "We're still learning something different about him every day," wide receiver Laveranues Coles said yesterday. "We walk through the doors every day wondering, 'What's in store for us? What's happening different?' The fans and us are on the same plane with trying to figure out coach." Coles is one of the veterans who seems the most grumpy with the new regime, calling Mangini "this guy" in one interview and his practices "brutal" in another. Which means either he'll be gone at season's end, or he'll adjust quickly. That's the process a team goes through when it's rebuilding. Mangini is weeding out this roster, to be sure. He wants a certain kind of player -- yes, a Belichick-type player -- and those who are willing to memorize the playbook, or accept his fines and punishments without complaint, they're the ones he's going to build around. The others will get lost. He blasted tight end Doug Jolley for an unnecessary roughness penalty in a preseason game against the Giants, then general manager Mike Tannenbaum traded the underachiever to Tampa Bay. It was a small move, but part of a larger message. The Jets will either get better or Mangini will get fired, but that process will take several seasons. Even the established coaches he's trying to emulate -- Belichick (6-10), Bill Parcells (3-12) and Tom Coughlin (4-12) -- endured similar struggles in their rookie campaigns. "Everything we do, there's a thought process to it," Mangini said. "It's planning, and it's pointing toward one goal -- getting better. There's no agenda to it. It's that simple."
The Jets are miserable, the Jets are exuberant, the Jets are grumpy about the long practices, the Jets are buying into Mangini's system, the Jets are not buying into Mangini's system... I hope to God that our running backs can juke defenders the way our CS has juked the media.
yeah Coles ought to just shut up already, he's been complaining every since his boy Herm left. Oh well Lav, deal with it.
oh mr jetsin2004 where are ya? I believe we had a little disagreement as to what coles meant in that article a week ago....well theres been two more articles since and now I hope its lear to you that here is a malcontent.....as I said last week it was obvious but some people need things spelled out eh?(patting self on back) just bustin your balls dude
Actually, it's pretty much just been the same quotes, repeated over and over by different reporters
Just because the reporter calls him a malcontent doesn't mean that the quote he gave them was in a negative light. Maybe he (Coles) is grumpy and pissed off. He can get over it.
If I was Coles I'd be pissed too. This guy came back to NY with the idea that Herm and him were going to stay together. This was also before Chad had his second injury, J Abe left for more money, and Chrebet was forced to retire. Basically all his reasons for wanting to come back have left him. I don't blame him at all.
Actually I think that was a pretty fair article; I enjoyed reading it. As far as Coles goes, the author sums it up pretty well "either he'll be gone at season's end, or he'll adjust quickly". This is a process, Mangini needs to find out about these guys. He also needs to get a few of his own locker room guys entrenched. That's why I laughed at people who thought it was a waste bringing in Bobby Hamilton. He is clearly one of Mangini's locker room guys. Did you read some of the quotes from him when he came in. I'm paraphrasing; Mangini is great, he has a great plan and vision, I love going to battle with him, etc. He'll have his pulse on the team and report back to Mangini. Every coach goes through this when they are rebuilding. You get rid of the bad apples and fill the team with "your" guys, or at least guys who won't foul the pipes.....
Cry me a river LC. He was complaining about the same crap in Washington, and let's not forget he received a pay raise to come back. I feel no pity for him....
I bet Mangini's been telling the players "See, this is why we don't want you talking to the press. We give them no other info and the only quote gets used over and over again for weeks on end." They basically have no other "juicy" quotes to go on, so they keep reusing the one quote that can be considered one. I honestly don't even have a problem with what Coles said. Camp is brutal. It's supposed to be brutal. It's not like he stormed out of his coach's office after an argument like Joey Porter in Oakland.
dude do you really think he came back because of his manlove for chad or abe? he came back because he was traded here first of all....and secondly hes here for the money. end of story. I dont care if he doesnt have any playmates or if he wants to lock himself in his gigantic house all day....just catch the fuckin ball and maybe do something with it after you catch it.....this guy hopefully will be part of the ongoing clearing out process
I didn't see anything wrong with the actual quotes he's made. It's people speculating over what he really means that's made it seem bad. I've heard from other articles that he's been a great locker room leader and seems happy, so it can't be too bad.
First of all, the Coles quote is a joke. Its hilarious the amount of articles i have seen it in now. Im not looking into that AT ALL. Second of all, im tired of people telling me, especially the media, that we are a team who will win 3 or 4 games. We do have some talent and experience on this team, along with good leadership and has anyone looked at our schedule recently? I read an article on ESPN. They gave a stat that only two teams in the last 5 YEARS have made the playoffs playing a schedule above .500. SCHEDULE IS EVERYTHING. Call me optimistic, but i think we will win AT LEAST 6 games this year.
Coles is a malcontent. He always has been, and always will be. If he doesn't watch it, he'll be a malcontent somewhere else. Mangini won't put up with it.
you mean a combine opponents winning percentage of over .500? I find that pretty hard to believe... but I'm too lazy to research it.
