Overall #3 The Jets secured the future of their offensive line by taking left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson (60) and center Nick Mangold (74) in the first round. Both started 16 games and showed improvement throughout the year. And New York selected shifty running back Leon Washington in the fourth round, and possibly its QB of the future, Kellen Clemens, in the second round. And they didn't even mention Smith! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mu.../gallery.nfl.top10draftclass06/content.8.html
Smith will eventually become a starting WR for the Jets...and a big time WR IMO from what I've seen...
Really? I could see him becoming the slot guy, but a big-time starting WR? What makes you think that?
Smith has size, and good hands. Not to mention he came up with key plays in times of need last season.
Coles has said the samething on many occasions. Smith must have really improved in practice through the year.
No he wasnt. He had 9 catches and 18 rushes. I dont know how thats huge for us. Was he a good decoy, yeah, but lets not act like he was our Marques Colston
He was huge for us in the sense that everytime he was on the field he was a threat. And he did the little things. He had a number of great special teams plays, not to mention that clutch catch in Miami. Noones comparing him to Colston, but i would agree that he was huge for us this year. According to you he was involved in 27 plays, but if you looked over the tapes at how many plays he really had an effect on, its probably nearing 100
Do u guys think that just having basically hester makes the bears draft class better than ours? I think ours was 2nd best to the Saints.
Smith did next to nothing. He was a big decoy. Now I'm glad we got him, but he really wasn't worth mentioning.... Leon Washington, Ferguson and Mangold were the solid contributors. If you were going to mention others, mentioning Eric Smith and Drew Coleman would have been more appropriate than smith.
stats dont tell everything, stats are taken out of context, when you take things out of context they dont make sense, to put those stats into context you would have...well just had to watch the jets this year...
I think getting double digits (12) sacks from your rookie DE drafted in the fifth round draft and who doesn't even start is pretty deserving of the 2nd spot. BTW - I posted a ton of post before, during and after the draft about drafting Mark Anderson with one of our 3rd ound picks.
I watched everygame and everytime Smith got in the field, we all held our breath, wondering what trickery we would do with him. Is it gonna be a halfback pass? oh, its a run up the gut for a yard. Hes on the field again! Is it gonna be a double reverse, oh its a 3 yd reception. Everyweek we talked about opening him up, when is he gonna throw the ball and all he did was a couple of QB sneaks, or short receptions. He didnt do anything to merit comparison to D'Brick and Mangold, who held there own on a previously terrible line and he didnt single handedly win us a game like Leon Washington, but you guys can go ahead and brag about that one crucial catch he had, like there arent a million players who can say that. Do I like his versatility? Hell yeah, I just hope next season we get to see "Slash Jr" and not Super Decoy
Smith has been a wide receiver for how long? Less than a year. But he has the tools, and with proper tutelage, and hard work -- and he seems like a hard worker - he can become an excellent receiver in this league.
Did anyone else see "the History of the Black Quarterback" on ESPN 2? Smith is an example of what they showed - great black athletes who were converted from QB to WR in the NFL. Marlin Briscoe is one of the most famous, but look at today and Hines Ward. Smith is bigger and stronger than Ward or Briscoe, and has as much speed. He also seems to be a very smart - hard working player. There is no reason from what I've seen of him, that he cannot become a top flight NFL wide receiver.
