The title speaks for itself, but you gotta give credit when credit is due. Cimini's article today had this comment which perfectly sums up the Jets season this year: "It can't be blamed on injuries or a difficult schedule (1-4 against teams with losing records). Quite simply, the Jets have slipped into the fog that sometimes envelops mediocre teams in the parity-driven NFL. They don't have enough talent to overcome a rough start, i.e. the Chargers, and the coaching staff isn't experienced with this type of adversity." http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...31/2007-10-31_jets_midseason_report_card.html
Well, if nothing else, he has a point about the coaching staff, HOWEVER.... Would'nt you rather have them figure it out in a year where you didnt expect them to contend???? He does however reveal himself to be a Pennington apologist. He goes on to say that Pennington isn't the major source of the problems, then points out that TJones is 3rd in th league in carries, and C&C are on pace to break last years number of catches.... What that tells you.... A look at the stats indicates that the Jets are #8 overall in Number of Offensive plays. They are however 26 in Yards per offensive play..... Part of that is the line, but more of that is the fact that Captain Checkdown cant muster up anything over 10 yards, consistently, leading to stacked lines...
Yeah, it's the coaching staff. It's not that 2 Captains, the team leaders, one on each side of the ball, look lost and overmatched in every game. It must be the coaching, not our superstars. Well, now we will see. Both of our "stars" are on the bench. Let's see just how bad our coaches are. And as far as Cimini goes, this is just sour grapes. He is pissed off that he actually has to work at a story, instead of the head coach spoon feeding him. What a joke.
Wow, excellent point. With any luck, Clemens turns that YPP from 26th to 8th, to go along with the numbers the others are putting up. We can definitely expect INTs along the way but it isn't like Pennington wasn't doing them already. In fact, if Clemens is able to move the ball and score, his INTs may not even matter because he may not be in a position to throw a clutch INT like Chad always seemed to do.
Agreed! When you run a dynamic offense, INTs do not matter as much, because you can score from anywhere on the field in an instant. With a dink and dunk offense, it takes 6-8 minute drives to score, so each turnover is more costly. That is why EM put Kellen in at the end of the last game. He could score twice in that time period by attacking the defense. Chad had no chance.
Fixed that for you. Mangini put in Clemens at the tail end of the game because he suddenly realized he was going to be in front of a news conference shortly and topic one was likely to be "what kind of idiot leaves Chad Pennington in at the end of yet another lost game when he has no chance at all to pull out a win?" If Mangini was a real NFL head coach he makes that switch at halftime when it might have mattered. He's not, so he didn't.
5 years from now, my son will see a re-run of the Sopranos and ask me, "why do they call him 'Mangenius'?" My response, "I just don't know son, I just don't know."
At Cincy the offense had a 13 point lead 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter and no turnovers and 2 series later and at the start of the 4th quarter they were behind. I don't think that is on the QB and I don't think that a dynamic offense is going to fix that. The only thing that is going to fix that is a better defense. If you are saying that now we will be ahead by 20 points in the second half, and the defense can't hardly blow that lead then you may have a point. Also, you complain about the offense, but when they have some 3 and outs the TOP is only going to go the other way. As far as yard per play, the passing game is 17th and the rushing game is 27th in the league. So we are middle of the pack in passing, but bottom dwellers in rushing, but I know it is because of Chad even though Miami and Minnesota have no passing game yet they lead the league in yards per carry.
^^I disagree. If the Jets could muster even a little offense, they'd have a couple more wins at least.
Thanks. You are right, but 5% is better than 0%. And as far as making the switch at halftime, I wish he made the change 2 weeks ago, but that is a moot point. At least the change has been made and I can look forward to watching Jets games again. And btw, as evidenced by the players EM has brought in, and now how they are starting to get playing time and looking pretty good **cough** David Harris **cough** I'd say EM is a real NFL head coach. I wish he'd work on my schedule, you wish he'd work on yours. He has his own.
The offense got off to a hot start but by the time they went into the locker room for halftime they had slowed considerably. The second half they were back to business as usual, barely producing at all. The offense can not tackle, penetrate, pursue, sack, and intercept... but it can put together long drives that wind the opposing defense and defeat the other team's morale. To say that the offense didn't partially contribute to this loss, as well as others, is incorrect at best. The Giants and the Bengals both were able to continue to run the ball on the Jets and dominate the playclock DESPITE playing from behind in both cases. If the Jets offense had done the same thing to either of those teams, both would've been harder pressed to throw the ball, would've had less of an opportunity to get their running backs going against our defense, and both would've been much more likely to make a mistake rather than an engineer a comeback on our defense. Our defense sucks, whatever. Our offense doesn't, and until it plays the way it should be playing, the defense will continue to get exposed and the Jets will continue to lose heart wrenching close games like the last few.
Great Example. /sarcasm. Jets take 2nd half kickoff. March down score 3. Cincy takes kickoff marches down scores 7. (Penalty on Revis D.Butthead, on 3rd and 11 kept drive alive....) Jets get ball. 3 and out Cincy takes ball Cincy takes kickoff marches down scores 7. (Penalty on Revis D.Butthead, on 3rd and 8 kept drive alive....) The Jets are now Down by 1, with 13:30 to go, On the road, . Jets get ball back. Fumble at 49 Yard line Cincy recovers. Cincy takes ball, marches down scores 7 Jets get ball. 3 and out Defense Holds. Jets get ball. Captain Checkdown throws Pick six. Game beyond over..... The score notwithstanding, no reasonable, intelligent person can hang that on the Defense. Revis got raped by the officials, on consecutive drives, on key third down plays (and I know everyone says the second one was legit, It wasn't....the "I'll throw the ball behind him, and you run into him play" is not pass interference. ...That ball lands about 5 yards behind the CB, and the WR doesnt try to go AROUND the CB he runs right into him....The CB is ENTITLED to that piece of ground...
It's not talent, we have more than enough talent to be at worst 4-4 right now. Some of our talent is inderperfoming along w/ an atricious job being done by the coaching staff but we have enough talent to win.
After we went up 13 the d allowed an 8 min drive capped off by a TD, that changed the entire game. That was the 2nd double digit lead blown in 3 weeks. The O stinks but the D has been the main reason we have been losing.
Giving up two first day draft picks to take David Harris was just a bad move. If the Jets had drafted him on the 26 and used the 2nd and 3rd round picks on decent line prospects we'd be in much better shape than we currently are. Revis is a very good prospect but he wasn't the piece the Jets needed to rebuild to a competent level. He was the piece they needed after they did that.
Actually it was a 3 for 2 And Stuckey looked really good, till he hurt his foot, so we are still a year away from being able to evaluate the trade objectively....
