Cimini roster projection: http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/...op&rand=ref~{"ref":"https://www.google.com/"} Would say I think Evans prob on practice squad, bohanon doesn't make it and think Dowling makes squad. Otherwise looks pretty fair Examining the New York Jets' roster: QUARTERBACKS (3) Geno Smith Michael Vick Matt Simms As expected, Smith is getting about 75 percent of the first-team reps, so there's no controversy here. We had rookie Tajh Boyd over Simms in the previous projection, but the early days of training camp have shown that Boyd isn't ready to take the job just yet. He has some redeeming qualities, but he's rough around the edges. RUNNING BACKS (4) Chris Johnson Chris Ivory Bilal Powell Tommy Bohanon It's status quo in the backfield. Johnson still isn't 100 percent, but he's getting there and looks good. This is one of the Jets' deepest areas.Daryl Richardson and Alex Green have shown flashes in camp, but they'll need to do more than that to crack this group. WIDE RECEIVERS (7) Eric Decker Jeremy Kerley David Nelson Stephen Hill Jacoby Ford Jalen Saunders Shaq Evans No changes here, either. Rex Ryan called this his deepest receiving corps since he became the coach, but deepest doesn't mean best. They're still looking for someone not named Decker to separate from the pack. Clyde Gates is challenging the top seven, sixth-round pickQuincy Enunwa (hip injury) is not. TIGHT ENDS (3) Jeff Cumberland Jace Amaro Zach Sudfeld This group has been uninspiring so far. Amaro has good days and bad days, which can be expected of a rookie. Chris Pantale, who spent last season on the practice squad, is pushing for that third spot. Sudfeld isn't a lock by any means. OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (9) D'Brickashaw Ferguson Brian Winters Nick Mangold Willie Colon Breno Giacomini Oday Aboushi Ben Ijalana Dalton Freeman Dakota Dozier Colon (knee) began camp on the physically unable to perform list, but he should be cleared soon to return. His absence is allowing Aboushi to work with the starting unit, impressing the coaches. Dozier, a fourth-round pick, has caught some eyes as he attempts to play guard for the first time. DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (5) Muhammad Wilkerson Sheldon Richardson Damon Harrison Kenrick Ellis Leger Douzable If the Jets had this much talent at a few more positions, they'd be a legitimate Super Bowl contender. LINEBACKERS (9) David Harris Demario Davis Calvin Pace Quinton Coples Jason Babin Nick Bellore Antwan Barnes Garrett McIntyre Jeremiah George The addition of Babin, signed last week to a two-year contract, changes things because he will have a significant role as a situational pass-rusher. In this projection, we're droppingJermaine Cunningham to make room for Babin, although Barnes (knee), still not cleared to practice, could be in jeopardy. The unheraldedTroy Davis also is making a push. Tough decisions ahead. CORNERBACKS (6) Dee Milliner Dimitri Patterson Kyle Wilson Dexter McDougle Darrin Walls Ellis Lankster Milliner says he's the best cornerback in football. Huh? He's not even the best in the division (see:Darrelle Revis). All the Jets want is the Milliner from last December and they'll be happy. Patterson might not be Revis or Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but he's off to a sneaky good start. SAFETIES (4) Dawan Landry Calvin Pryor Antonio Allen Jaiquawn Jarrett They've been using a three-man rotation with Landry, Pryor and Allen. The Jets like Allen's upside and want to give him as many quality reps as possible. Keep an eye on former practice-squadder Rontez Miles; he's fearless and hits like a truck. If he excels on special teams, he could push Jarrett for the fourth spot. SPECIALISTS (3) Nick Folk Ryan Quigley Tanner Purdum
I think Daryl Richardson makes the team. I wish they didn't keep Bohanon or any FB for that matter. Seems like a waste of a roster spot to me, but the WCO loves the FB position, oh well.
There's going to be some real tough choices......even for the Practice Squad. Cimini projecting here that our last 5 picks won't make the team, as well as Campbell, Pantele (our only TE with some blocking ability unless Amaro has something we haven't seen yet), Miles, Davis, and some promising UDFA's on the Dline. All in all, i think he's pretty close here, give or take about 3 guys.
I enjoyed reading the positive news about Patterson. Wow that would be great if he could provide a good performance and avoid injury.
I say cut Simms, put Boyd on the practice squad and then just roll with 2 QB's. If Geno gets hurt then Vick is the obvious choice to play. If Vick gets hurt too then the season is f**ked anyways so you could just sign a couple of QB's off the street and play the season out. An extra roster spot to keep a rookie with some potential around is better then Simms just sitting around all year. Linebacker is going to be a tough cut down though. Harris, Davis, Pace, Coples, and Babin are all locks and are essentially who will be playing LB next year. After that we are looking for Special Teamers and some sub-ins. Personally I would keep Bellore and George, switch Mcintire for Reily, and then make a choice between Davis and Bellore. The roster this year has some serious depth.
I see what you're saying, but I think the Jets need to have a fullback for the kind of offense that they're running. We'll be run-oriented and need a fullback to help open lanes for CJ, and help protect the QB and make up for possibly weak guard play. We could run some two tight end sets, but do we really have the personnel there to create mismatches, and a QB we can depend on to take advantage of them? Hopefully Geno will develop into that guy, but I don't think we can assume that going in. I also think it'll take Amaro at least 1 season before he really hits his stride and becomes a dominant tight end. Our playmakers on offense will be Decker, CJ, and Ivory. So I think the best move is to try to maximize those strengths. If we had two really good, established tight ends, or 3 good wide receivers, and a more established/dependable QB, then I think we could conceivably do without a fullback, but right now I think we need a fullback. Bohannon was pretty bad last year, and I think that if we can get a better one (or if Bohannon shows major improvement), then that'll just help the offense in a significant way.
