I know there will be mixed Opinions on this but IMO we should of kept Chris Baker.. He wanted more money was the only thing that made him decide to move on.. For a Young QB the TE is where he is going to look majority of the time especially down in the redzone.. Its only preseason yes but the guy already has 4-6 tds up there in foxboro.. I always thought he had the hands and his blocking was decent so he could of been our blocking TE and Keller the H-Back type.. He never really got the chance here to be the go to guy because i think with chad and favre they just didnt utilize him as much...
i would say he probably played pretty well it the first game with 2 td catches. didnt watch either one so i really cant say for sure. i definitely think this will be a situation that comes back to bite the jets in the ass. he is a very good player and too many people decided they hate him because he wanted what he thought he deserved. i always liked the kid as a player and never really felt he was utilized enough. i can just feel him having a good year and biting us when we play them. however coming on here and saying he has 4-6 tds when he has 2 is going to get you nowhere as far as your point is concerned.
I always liked Baker too and I was disappointed with the situation, but the fact is he ran himself out of town by acting like a bitch. There was no way we could let him stay.
Yuor wrong there. Baker always had good hands. Possibly the best on the Jets in his time here. His problems are he lacks speed after that catch and any ability to get seperation from coverage. He was a good blocker as well. Should we have kept him? Its obvious the front office did not want him and he would be of little use in the passing game thanks to Keller. His depth would have been great but at what price? I'm not missing him much, but tis a long regular season yet to come.
there is sure a way we could have let him stay. this is the same team that did the same thing minnesota is doing right now last year with brett favre. they can always make it work. they just decided he wasnt important enough to worry about it. my issue is that i think the front office severely underrated his importance, they like many on this board fell in love with keller and failed to see the shortcomings in his game. they essentially overvalued keller and undervalued baker. while i dont necessarily agree with how he handled things i dont think its reason to let him go to the patriots and be a pain in the ass twice a year for the next 3 years.
He was becoming a cry baby there is a good chance he didn't want to play for the jets anymore and with keller not worth babying
I agree with most of this. I think he has good hands, not the best on the Jets though. He would have been the 2nd TE here and wanted to be paid like a starting TE. Add to that the fact that he was acting like a bitch and parking his BENTLY in the team presidents parking spot while protesting his contract and he's just not worth it. He'll probably have the best season of his career in NE. There offense is so potent and he's about the 5th guy teams will worry about covering - therefore he will get open and Brady will find him. This board will go crazy every time Brady throws him a TD, it's going to be awesome. The truth is he's a slightly above average TE at best. He now has the luxury of being an under the radar guy on a potent offense with the best QB in the game throwing to him. So every time he scores a TD, we shouldn't just assume he'd be doing the same here.
Sure we should have kept Baker, but he'd already been unhappy with his contract once, so eventually we weren't going to be able to afford him anyway.
Remember that time Chris Baker was wide open and woulda probably scored a TD, but he tripped over his own feet and missed the ball? Fuck that guy.
Problem is he was worth around 1.5, 2 mill and earned around 3 something mill... we shouldn't have given him that kind of contract in the first place... but with the money he was making it was right to cut him.
We should have kept him based on the fact we're incredibly thin at TE. Bad move letting him go, decent player.
all valid points but you could also say he is not even the best te on their team and does not get the reps or looked at enough. either way if he has a successful year it will not surprise me. i also dont think he would have had a good year receiving wise with the jets. my issue is with the super negativity that has been shown this guy for some time especially after there have been a number of guys who have felt they were treated unfairly by the jets front office.
Only Baker, his agent, and a handful of knuckleheads here ever thought he was very good. What has he done to even prove he's "above average"in this league?
please make note of the difference in running blocking and protection in the passing game this year for your answer. he will also prove more than average as a receiver this year. to the guy asking about the ball he dropped that would have won the game i am pretty sure that was against oakland and he should have definitely had it, it was behind him but he should not have slipped. however if you are going to base him having brick hands on that single play you are foolish. he never had a history of drops.
