http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2008/03/jets_break_out_big_bucks_for_p.html And the Jets aren't done. Linebacker Calvin Pace (Cardinals) visited yesterday. He's considered one of the top linebackers in free agency and is seeking nearly $20 million guaranteed. The Jets and Dolphins are reportedly vying for his services, setting up a stare-down between Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum and his former mentor, Bill Parcells, the Dolphins' new boss. According to someone aware of the team's intentions, veteran guard/center Damien Woody (Lions) is scheduled to visit today, and the Jets have also contacted cornerbacks Will James (Eagles) and Randall Gay (Patriots), safety Eugene Wilson (Patriots), linebacker Mario Haggan (Bills) and right tackle Shane Olivea (Chargers). They're expected to visit next week. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly for the team. That person also said that coach Eric Mangini made an 11th-hour plea to cornerback Asante Samuel to delay signing with the Eagles and come in for a visit. Samuel, however, declined, telling Mangini the Jets entered the bidding too late. It was initially believed the Jets had no plans to pursue Samuel.
LOOKS LIKE WE'RE PUSHING TO WIN, IN 08. I THINK WE SMELL THE pats BLOOD! WE KNOW THEY'RE WOUNDED, AND NOWS THE TIME TO POUNCE!!!
I can even smell the forgot caps lock was on. :shit::up: We aren't in the same stratosphere as the Patsies yet...
With the way the NFL is now, every coach, save Belichick and Dungy, is desperately trying to save their job. As far as the remaining moves the Jets are interested in, I say let the Dolphins have Calvin Pace, sign Gay and Woody and call free agency over with.
so far so good I have been saying all aong all we really needed was 3 key players. 1, pro bowl caliber Guard..... got one 2, runstuffing Nose Guard..... got one 3, playmaking reciever ..... ????? our defense stepped up at the end of the season and if we stopped the running game in the middle it would of made a world of difference in the begiinning of the season Our offence would of had a completely different look if we had Faneca last year. I think there are very good players to be had in the draft recievers running backs not to mention Gholston, Mcfadden, Ellis So our FO does not need to go crazy we have alot of quality position players, we just nedded to get better in a couple of key positions and so far so good.
fuck calvin pace. sign woody or sheppard and address OLB in the draft. 6 sacks isnt even that impressive let alone the guy barely saw the field till last yr. faneca and jenkins i feel comfortable throwing money at. a one year not even a wonder? no.
Take no fucking prisoners, Tangini! The acquisition of Pace can potentially give the gets that same kind of pass-rushing depth, although from the LB's, as the Giants. Pick-up Gholston and we're set at the OLB positions going two deep on both sides.
Yeah, but the problem is Pace is a better player than Woody and Sheppard. Sheppard had massive problems in 2007.
all im saying is i dont see the point in throwing that much money at him. itll be bryan thomas contract 2.0 and contrary to all the combine hype i think gholston will still be on the board at 6. so this is all very moot to me. theyre covering their bases though. but i seriously do not think hes worth the money. i had no idea who he was until last year. either way, glad to see were actually agressive. and maybe they pick him up and can prove what i said wrong.
The only team I watched more than the Jets in 2007 was the Cardinals. Pace is flat-out a better player than Thomas. Pace also comes across as a smart football player. Thomas is sort of a moron. The Cardinals were coached horribly under Dave McGinnis and Dennis Green. Pace started to play well when Ken Whisenhunt took over and moved him to LB. He was a much more confident player last year.
ionno id rather have gholston but since thats not guaranteed we obviously need pace. but is he worth that guaranteed money? do you think so? ive seen him play and like him but you do make a good point he had the disadvantage of being drafted into a horribly managed franchise. so you could be right.
There's always the possibility that he'd lose his desire after signing a big contract. That could happen with any player, though. If I had only 2007 game film to go on, I'd say he's definitely worth the money. Was he good in 2007 because he was moved to a different position and the coaching staff instilled confidence in him or was he good because he's a bum who was simply playing hard in a contract year? I think the former is the answer.
Pace was rushing from the strong side. His numbers are a little bit more impressive than Thomas', and he'll make Thomas a better player. While I think it's a very scary signing, hoping to get Gholston and going into next season with the same set of linebackers is equally chilling. -X-
And Pace has not been an LB for long. It is reasonable to assume that his sacks would increase with more experience at the position.
