Yes, the playcalling was pathetic, and yes, the team came out flat in the second half, but one thing that really stood out to me was the startling lack of a punishing runningback. The closest thing we saw to it was the Jones stiff-arm. Their LBs were fresh and unflinching even in the 4th quarter, and we pretty much abandoned the run to set up the pass after the first drive, giving way to erratic and senseless playcalling.

Mangini tries to teach the players the basics, maybe he needs to teach his Offensive Coordinator the basics as well. Thomas Jones cannot carry the team, Leon cannot run every down, if we are truly going with RBBC, we need Chatman in there to pound in between the tackles and establish a true running game if Favre is ever going to be effective with this team.

Completely agree...I posted as much in the WTF @ the 3 runs in a row thread...I think Chatman's roided out body is just what we need to really pound the rock. TJ is not a punisher. Chatman will do to opposing Ds what LJ did to us in the 4th yesterday.

I think you're completely wrong. They knew about the suspension before they signed him, it was for a busted test with the Phins and the reason Parcells cut him. We're keeping the guy on the roster during a suspension and going with a 2-back depth chart so we can refuse to use the guy? Shott has missed a punishing back since we cut Barlow loose; he wasn't much as a starter, but he was the sole reason we beat the Pats in 2006. We punished them between the tackles. Neither Jones nor Leon are capable of doing that.

There's only so many carries in a game , between Jones and Washington there won't be many for him...if any

Situational carries in a RBBC accumulate more in some games than others. Chatman could have been money in the RZ yesterday, instead of watching Jones run face-first into a wall 3 times in a row. He's good to the outside and shit to the inside. You are thinking just like they were calling plays yesterday. Inside the box.

Not especially I thought the play calling sucked, should have tried a play action pass to one of the TE's

We should have tried a lot of things, especially not abandoning the run early when it worked in the first drive. Had we kept running early to the outside and had a short passing game to bring the secondary up to the line, passing options would have opened up over the top; but Shotty tried to get cute, like he so often does.

Stale, boring play calling take a few chances, run wide, hit the TE over the middle, use the whole field..

Why? I hope he gets cut when he gets back, we don't need him if he's suspended for performance enhancing issues.

Jones for 20 and Washington for 15 isn't enough?

Washington was our starter for a large part of his rookie season remember.

He wasn't suspended for performance enhancers or weed or anything like that, he was suspended for using a diuretic, which at times can be used as a masker, although he dropped a lot of weight last season for performance purposes. Maybe he used an illegal substance, maybe he didn't but there was no proof of it in this case. The team already knew about the suspension before they signed him. Then they gave him the majority of the carries in the final pre-season game before his suspension kicked in. He's not going to be cut. He's going to be a big part of the running game in the red zone for the majority of the season. We went into week one with 2 active tailbacks on the roster for that very reason.

Read this thread in this entirety to enlighten yourself of the truth.

You do realise we gained 5 ypc against New England for over 100 yards? It's not like the running game stank.

New York Jets safety Eric Smith placed on reserve/suspended list; Jesse Chatman activated
    by Dave Hutchinson and M.A. Mehta/The Star-Ledger
    Monday October 06, 2008, 4:01 PM
    http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2008/10/jets_safety_eric_smith_placed.html

The Jets placed safety Eric Smith on the reserve/suspended list Monday and reinstated RB Jesse Chatman, who served a four-game suspension for violating the league's steroids and related-substances policy. Chatman, who practiced Monday, will take Smith's roster spot.

Smith officially appealed his one-game suspension and $50,000 fine for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin in the final minute of the Jets 56-35 win in Week 4. The appeal will be held Tuesday.

If Smith wins his appeal, the Jets will have to make another roster move and Smith will be allowed to practice with the team Wednesday. Coach Eric Mangini wasn't overly concerned that Smith, who apparently suffered a concussion on the play, would be physically able to practice Wednesday.

"I don't anticipate any medical issues in terms of him playing," said Mangini.

Abram Elam took Smith's spot in the portion of practice open to the media Tuesday. Mangini said David Barrett and Hank Poteat will also practice at safety.

The 5-8, 225-pound Chatman had 164 rushing yards and 9 catches for 101 yards in the preseason.

^ Hopefully Nugent is healthy for week 7 so we can cut feeley instead of someone else when Smith comes back.

Another guy who had a solid preseason, but has only been ok in an NFL role to date. If we are pinning our hopes on him fixing the running game I think we are in trouble.

I would not put much faith in JC since he showed viturally nothing when he was with the Dolphins. The RG is really quite perplexing since we now have a threat at QB that can throw the ball to any place on the FB field but so far that has not opened up the RG whatsoever. Hard to determine if it is the line or is it that TJ is not quick enough to get to the hole or is it a combination of the 2. In any case certainly the lack of a RG up to now has weaken us considerably since we cannot go on 8/10 minute drives

I dont expect Chatman's three or four touches a game to fix the running woes. I expect that our vaunted Bill Calahan coached Oline will have spent their week off learning how to run block. And that's what will fix the running game.

He looked good in the games he started last year. He ran for 4 ypc over the course of the season. He looked good in preseason. He runs with power, finishes his runs, and does not go down on first contact.

We now have 3 different types of RB on the roster that compliment each other nicely. By himself he will not turn around our running game, but I am hopeful that his addition gives our run game the piece it was missing.
