I really like what we've "seen" and heard so far from Carpenter. Whether it's the TC reports, whether it's Westhoff praising him, whether it's the players praising him, it looks like Maccagnan brought a really good player in who also fits our O-Line in the way he plays the game. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...olt-new-jet-guard-carpenter-article-1.2316224 Also, Brick should rename himself to Titanium or something. Simply Brick just doesn't do it anymore.
Let's not put the kid in the Hall of Fame just yet. Glad to hear he is doing well in camp so far though.
Sounds good. Hopefully our left side will be really steady now. I'm gonna be surprised if any body supplants Colon on the right side tho. He's got the veteran experience, and that counts for something. If anybody can overcome him it would be a good sign that somebody is on the improve and ascending
I would like to see someone beat out Colon for the RG job but I have not seen anything from the rest of the field so far. While I wish we signed Mathis I would be content to see Colon start if it meant Winters and Aboushi not seeing the field.
I feel the same way. Doesn't sound like Dozier is distinguishing himself, and it's prolly too soon to expect that much out of Jarvis Harrison. Hopefully Harrison can rise above the lot in the future
Willie Colon is totally right when talking about how D'Brick lost a bit when Faneca left. Brick is more of a lighter, more cerebral guy who benefits from having a mauler next to him. If our offensive line in any way resembles '09 or '10, I think we are to be an underrated offense.
Faneca was hardly HOF or even Pro Bowl worthy when he was with us. The comparison is just that we now might have a physical presence, a great veteran at LG who will punish DT's in the 4th quarter and push people around, get those tough yards and inches to convert 1st downs and run the clock down, instead of being the weak link be somebody who might help Brick and Mangold improve further. He's not gonna be a Hall Of Famer, but Pro Bowls are not out of the question in my opinion. Those are extremely high expectations for somebody who a few people didn't even think was a guy who should be counted on as a starter. He didn't exactly light it up in Seattle. All that remains to be seen but at the very least I think we got us a rock solid starting guard.
Thanks for posting this. Sounds very encouraging, and I hope they are right that Carpenter IS a good player and will be a great fit on our OL, rather than some of the posters here who trashed the signing. One thing, I don't think that last quote is correct. Earlier this spring or summer when we were having a discussion about Brick, someone posted that Brick had missed only one snap in his career and that was due to an equipment problem. I had seen that before on another Jets fan site, and am pretty sure it's accurate
DBrick has never missed a snap? What a stat. Mangold barely has missed any time too. Great 2006 draft.
Yeah, I posted that on a different board a while ago, I don't know if you're referring to that. The legendary cleat that was stuck in his facemask, that's the play. 2008 against the Patriots I believe.
I don't exactly understand why people don't appreciate what Faneca did here. He was a top guard in the league when we had him and absolutely punished defensive tackles all game long. He was the reason D'Brick and Mangold could move to the second level and seal off running lanes and more importantly be demolished whomever was in his path when he pulled and sealed linebackers easily. Go use your advanced statistics in him giving up X amount of sacks all you want or go back and watch him lead the number one rushing attack on power pull plays play after play. Offensive line play is so disrespected sometimes especially years later. D'Brick gets the same type of slack for having a down year with XFL players playing next to him for two years.
Who said anything about not appreciating what he did here? The entire thread is about how good he was and hoping that Carpenter might be the same type of guy.
Well saying that he wasn't even a pro bowler calibre player is forgetting how dominating he really was. The drop off was nearly 30 yards a game on the ground when he left and that's with a quality replacement in Slauson.
I'm not getting too caught up with the statistics, that's too easy to say "player x left, that's why we lost xx yards per game", there's more to that than just that. All I said was that he was hardly HOF or Pro Bowl worthy when he was here and you can't tell me that he was the best guard in football back then, he just wasn't. HOF clearly not, he was here for 2 years and then got cut, after that his career was pretty much over. For the 2 years he was here you could argue he played on a Pro Bowl level and I'd agree with that. He was similar to Favre or Ty Law, guys who were very good at a later stage of their career for a short period of time, made a lot of money, and then the experiment ended. We squeezed two really good years out of Faneca, he wasn't an All Pro for us for 10 years. That's all I was trying to say.
