What do you guys think about newton? Is he for real? I have him backing up Romo and Rivers in 2 of my leagues, and I´m buying that he´s for real. I actually tried to trade Rivers this week, but surprisingly, didn´t find anyone interested (maybe I gotta wait, til some Stud gets fucked up). I decided to hold on to Cam, in the league where i got Homo, because Homo is Homo. how´s your take on Newton, too much risk to ship a top-5 QB, and rely on Newton? Will he deliver all year? This week, I´m obviously playing newton over Romo, but I´m also thinking about actually playing newton over Rivers. The Bolts might just grind it out in the 2nd half, and newton should find himself in another close one, having to throw all 4 quarters. thoughts?
I wouldn't have him as my #1 guy. He's for real but that doesn't mean he'll continue to put up these numbers or teams won't learn to study him on film and scheme better. You can be certain he won't put up those type of numbers every week because he's gonna have off games at some point. both the cardinals and the packers concentrated on stopping the run and it opened up things for cam. Now that teams realize they're a pass first team, you won't see 8 men in the box as much Romo and Cam are a good 1-2 punch depending on matchups. Romo is a good fantasy QB, regardless of what you think of him (assuming he's healthy of course).
How could there even be a question if he is for real? Of course he is for real but he will make mistakes, plenty of them, he is a rookie. Still a great fantasy play most weeks.
After Rivers bye week in Week 6, you should know which is worth keeping and which is worth trading. By that time 3-3 and 2-4 teams won't be out of the playoff race, but they will be looking to trade and get back in. Week 3 there isn't a lot of desperate fantasy owners.
In a redraft I would obviously be more open to trading Cam. In a keeper/dynasty I'd have to be blown away by an offer to deal him. If you already have a solid, contending team, then consider trading Newton high right now in your Rivers league (Rivers is a QB1 lock to produce consistently). However, Newton has a better chance (even if you think it's a small one) to be a top 5-overall fantasy beast. If you're comfortable taking a higher risk, or your team needs that high-upside, swing-for-the-fences player in order to contend...maybe trade Rivers for a big upgrade at a skill position.
He will be a good fantasy QB I think but people are mesmerized by the first 2 weeks so they are buying REALLY high. Some dipshit in one of my leagues traded Chris Johnson for him straight up... I think if Carolina wants to see success they will need to start running the ball and playing time of possession ball. You won't win if your QB is throwing 40 to 50 times every game. I expect his numbers to simmer down come week 3 or 4 when opposing defenses get tape on him and start scheming around Carolina's strengths/weaknesses.
He showed he is capable of putting up big numbers. The mistakes are inevitable when you put such a raw guy in there.
