Posted Aug 28, 2014 Randy Lange Editor-in-Chief, newyorkjets.com @rlangejets Blog: Randy's Radar A Look at the Players Fighting to Make It from 75-Man Roster down to Final 53 You could hear the love in Rex Ryan's voice as the Jets head coach addressed the gathering at the team's Kickoff Luncheon on Wednesday before they boarded their buses and headed south for Cheesesteak City. "We have one more preseason game, and it's a very important game," Ryan told the fans. "And obviously a lot of guys are going to showcase what they can do, and then we get down to our 53, that final number. All these guys right here, we have 75 guys, and there's a lot of Jets in this building, but only 53 are going to be chosen to play for our football team." Which of those players in the Cipriani Wall Street hall will make it to the final 53 roster through tonight's final preseason game against the Eagles by Saturday night's final-cuts deadline and who will be among the 22 that have to be moved off the 75-man roster by then? Here is a preview of who's on the bubble by positions: Quarterback In theory, Matt Simms and rookie Tajh Boyd are fighting it out tonight for the third QB spot. But Simms has a couple of years' experience on the Clemson rookie and it would take a major upheaval against the Eagles to unseat Simms from the No. 3 spot. Running Back The Jets are unlikely to keep five tailbacks, so it would look as if Daryl Richardson and Alex Green are fighting it out for the fourth spot. Wide Receiver Six could be retained and nine are on the roster. With rookie Jalen Saunders as punt returner and Saalim Hakim appearing to be favored as the lead kickoff return man, that leaves Clyde Gates, Greg Salas and rookie Quincy Enunwa in a scrum for a spot that may or may not exist. Tight End A good group of three. Can Chris Pantale make a statement in tonight's game for a fourth? Offensive Line Twelve on the current roster but only eight or nine will be on the 53. Is Ben Ijalana or rookie Brent Qvale the backup swing tackle? Who will back up at guard, Caleb Schlauderaff, Will Campbell or rookie Dakota Dozier? And perhaps most important, is Dalton Freeman the first man up if Nick Mangold were to go down, or is it Schlauderaff? Many questions here. Defensive Line Not much room on this deep group. Perhaps one of the following could squeeze in from among NT T.J. Barnes, DT Tevita Finau and rookies Kerry Hyder and Zach Thompson. Linebacker Many cuts from this 13-man contingent, but who? Late arrival A.J. Edds has been very active in the preseason games. Among the rookies, will IK Enemkpali's injury factor into his roster spot? Drafted rookies Jeremiah George and Trevor Reilly are also on the bubble, along with Troy Davis and perhaps Antwan Barnes, depending on how the team assesses his injury rehab. Defensive Back Because of the situation at corner, most are in good shape, although will it come down to first-year man Jeremy Reeves or Johnny Patrick for the 53rd spot on the roster? At safety, it may be a battle between third-year man Josh Bush and first-year returnee Rontez Miles.
If you read the WR section it appears Randy Lange thought Stephen Hill was a cut going into the Eagles game. Saunders, Hakim, Decker, Kerley and Nelson make 5. Gates, Salas and Enunwa are fighting for the 6th spot that may not exist.
I think the 6th spot exists,.. I don't think they're sure about a 7th. That's how I read it but I could be mistaken. Not sure keeping only 5 is/was ever an option. Though at this point I'd be shocked if Hill wasn't in the fight for that spot.
I think that last WR spot was between Hill v Salas v Gates. Salas won that spot IMO. I see us carrying 6 receivers. Salas won't get cut.
I had hoped Hill would improve, but you can't teach catching with your hands this late in life. Good riddance.
