that Network has some smart people running it. I wonder if Collinsworth had anything to do with it as well. Gumbel could be the worst i ever heard.
Bryant Gumbel Leaves NFL Network Posted Apr 11th 2008 4:32PM by Michael David Smith Filed under: NFL Media Watch, Breaking News, The Word, NFL Network http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/04/11/bryant-gumbel-leaves-nfl-network/ Bryant Gumbel is leaving his position as the play-by-play voice of live games on NFL Network, it was announced today. Both parties said it was Gumbel's decision to step aside. Gumbel released the following statement through NFL Network: "I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to call NFL Network games the past two years, which was a new experience for me," said Gumbel. "But we've agreed that we'd all be better served going in different directions. There are a lot of talented people at NFL Network. I thank them, I wish them well, and I have no doubt that they will be very successful going forward." NFL Network President and CEO Steve Bornstein released a statement calling Gumbel "One of the great broadcasters of our time." But he had never worked in play-by-play before he was tapped for NFL Network, and many viewers and critics thought he struggled to learn on the job. NFL Network will begin looking for a replacement to call play-by-play on its eight live regular-season games immediately. Cris Collinsworth is expected to remain as the network's primary color commentator.
so he was called a great of all time and yet that was his 1st gig??? Wow, Bornstein really put alot into the press statement.
He said that he was one of the great broadcasters of our time, not great play-by-play announcers. Personally I've always thought that Gumbel was overrated in all of the things that he did, but it was obvious in only the little I heard him (I don't get the network) that he was horribly incompetent as a play-by-play man.
i watched the games on mute, and tried to time when his comments ended and collisworth's began. His HBO show is good, in terms of the topics they cover- not necessarily him. He seems disingenuous to me. Also, full of himself beyond anything i think i can achieve if i tried. Gumbel is a journalist, not a broadcaster.
One thing about Gumble, the man hasn't changed since the late 70's when he was doing the NBC pre-game show, looks the same, sounds the same.....
This guy was the biggest douche to ever call a game. All this started when one Thursday (or Saturday) Gumbel was absent due to a sore throat. He was replaced by Tom Hammond that night for the Broncos/Texans game. Right after the game, I wrote a (drunk-angry) letter to the network and asked for this walking pile of articulate turd to be let go and be replaced by Hammond. And...now...my prayers were answered. Not only was Gumbel gone, but he got replaced by...none other than Tom Hammond. I thought he was good. Now, I don't know if people on here are gonna criticize me over Hammond's play-by-play, but goddamnit, this is Gumbel he's replacing, and that's just aaaalllllllllrright in my book.
