Jets receiver Braylon Edwards’ DWI case was adjourned until May 16, according to Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger.

Edwards’ attorney requested more time because he plans to file motions hoping to exclude some evidence against Edwards taken on the night in question.

“When the time is right, the case will be over,” Edwards said Monday morning.

Edwards’ attorney indicated they would listen if a plea offer was made. It’s possible that Edwards will want to wrap up the case before free agency hits because the uncertainty could hurt his value.

There is great doubt about whether Edwards will still be a member of the Jets by the time the case is over. Santonio Holmes is believed to be a bigger free agent priority than Edwards. One NFL G.M. told ESPNNewYork.com that signing both players will be impossible, and the Jets are likely to “string along” Edwards as a fallback option.

If that’s the plan, it’s working so far.

“The interest is there on their side,” Edwards told Vrentas. “The interest is there on my side. We’ve just got to put it together.”

per PFT (which is terrible I know)

    Also on this:

Now I get that lawyers will do what they do to try and get this thrown out, but this doesn't sound like someone who wants this wrapped up as quickly as possible.

I don't see how dragging this out helps his market value.

Making motions to get the case tossed or at least evidence tossed is a no-lose situation for Braylon. If he wins the motion and beats the case or lessens the prosecutors case, he is in a better position for free agency. If he loses the motion he is in the same situation as he is in now. No risk, only possible reward

I wouldn't say there's no risk. There is a possibility (however small) that he could actually have a (minimal) jail-time sentence from his Cleveland probation case stemming from a conviction on the NY DWI.

So anybody looking at a long-term deal with him can low-ball him if they're negotiating under the premise that this shit is still hanging over him.

Which by the way helps Tanny's bargaining position, so it's all good.

There is no risk to him filing motions is the point I made, they can only help him, can't hurt him, and if he gets acquitted based upon them he will not get violated for a probation offense stemming from his Cleveland plea

Those motions would likely end the case immediately. And it would be crazy for him to not attempt to mount all possible defenses.

Not going to jail >>>>>>>>>>. whatever bit of contractual leverage he might lose.

He needs to let his attorneys do their due diligence on whether there is a viable issue that could let him walk. In a DUI case, that could include a bad stop, improper advice of rights, improper testing procedures, or any number of things the cops can and do screw up.

If the DUI case gets kicked, it is highly likely that he avoids a probation violation in Ohio and a league imposed suspension. As someone stated earlier, there is no downside to exploring these motions. The only downside is in pleading guilty.

Wasn't it impossible for the Jets to sign Ferguson, Mangold and Revis to extensions last summer?

My main concern with this case is that, if convicted he may serve up to 6 months in jail in Ohio for violating his probation. This case is not to be taken lightly. Although my personal feeling is that he won't see any jail time, the possibility is there. This isn't a first-time offense, remember he was already on probation for punching a member of Lebron James' entourage in Cleveland. (Wow, just think how things are different now, both Edwards and James got out of Cleveland). So anyway, while it seems like athletes usually get out of these situations, the possibility is there that he might have to serve time -- which for the Jets would be like throwing money away.

Personally, I think Braylon Edwards is one of the most exciting members of the Jets. I'd love to see him resigned to a long deal, and see this case wrapped up cleanly.

I'm praying we sign him. I think keeping our core guys on offense is crucial.

As much as I hope all goes well for Braylon, where does that leave him in contract talks with the Jets? If I were Tanny I would go to him before his case and try to resign him. This fiasco has got to hurt his value. While he still won't come cheap, I think he should at least allow Tanny to sign him for a cap friendly deal even if he isn't willing to settle for less overall money.
