His agent reported today that Marshall has requested a trade and that the Broncos have stated that they will do everything in their power to accommodate his wishes. I'm not sure whether we could assemble an attractive enough trade offer or whether we could afford to sign him but he is a top talent who is still young although recovering from off season hip surgery. He's also had plenty of off the field issues which are a undeniable risk factor.
Risk being as they may this would be slightly better than a Burress acquisition because Brandon is younger. Marshall is a beast. Cannot argue his immediate impact as a player.
Given your poll choices it would come down to asset management for me. Plax provieds a quick fix for this year and costs not picks to aquire. Its the simple choice.
Better in terms of talent and youth, worse in terms of cost (both in draft picks and contract) and risk (Marshall has more off-field incidents than Burress). Although I suppose there will be people confident the Jets can acquire him for Thomas Jones and a late-round pick, so if you subscribe to that goofiness, by all means bring him in.
Brandon Marshall is a better choice than Plax.......and here are my reasons 1) He's younger...being 25 years old 2) 206 receptions in the last 2 years....I would say his hands are pretty reliable  3) he's built like a mack truck (230lbs) w/ breakaway speed 4) his chances of ending up in jail are good.....but not as good as Plax's chances  this conversation is also taking place in the NFL forum.
Sure, but at what cost? Marshall is going to cost a first +. I in no way want to deal our first rounder in next years draft, let alone other picks, for Marshall. Looking solely at the talent he wouls be the best player, but would also set the franchise back quit a bit to sing him. The time for reservign picks is now. We have a protential franchise QB. The Defense and O-line seem ready to go. We have good depth at RB. Now is the time we start thinking about trading back and aquireing more picks or staying part with what we have. Otuside of a true #1 wideout we have no glaring holes (unless you want to count proven QB play). I do not want to sped a ton of picks, followed by a ton of cash in his contract, to a head case wideout.
No thanks. Burress' contract will be much smaller than Marshall's and it's a one year trial for us. If he performs great then we give him a nice contract. If not we let him walk. It's the least commitment and makes the most sense for us.
I don't think Denver will be able to get a first for him. He has a troubled past. At most, the Broncos should get a two late round picks for him.
I hear what you're saying, Harpua. In fact, I'm one of the biggest supporters of NOT trading away our draft picks (especially our first rounders). But when you analyse this situation....Marshall is 25 years old (he hasn't hit his prime yet)....he's proven...has all the talent and physical tools ....and is EXACTLY what our WR corps needs. Chances are...we could get at least 7-10 years out of Marshall. I believe in this situation....surrendering our 1st round pick for this guy would be worth it. Provided that he signs a long term deal...and stays out of trouble. I understand that next year's draft is LOADED with talent.....but as we all know....rookies are unproven. Marshall is a proven commodity. Just my .02.
on rotoworld.com Brandon Marshall's agent Kennard McGuire confirmed that his client has requested a trade and says the Broncos, "will do everything in it’s power to accommodate (Marshall's) wishes." That doesn't mean Marshall will be traded, of course, but it's interesting the Broncos are open to the possibility. Or at least say they are. The difficulty will be getting appropriate value for a Pro Bowl level talent coming off hip surgery with serious off-field concerns. We doubt Denver will get an offer they deem suitable, but the Ravens are one team that could test the waters.
the Jets need to throw a line in the water with this.....I really hope Tanny explores every avenue regarding Marshall.
While I agree to a point, Marshall is proven, but will be entering a different system without the Probowl QB throwing to him. How many times have very good players signed for big else where to drop off because the system did not fit them or the surronding talent was much lower? Not saying that will happen to Marshall, but its one more thing to worry about with him. With the 2010 draft shaping up like it is I want tanny to have as much ammo as possible to work some Magik that day.
I don't think Denver moves him for that. Maybe a Marshall for Boldin type deal that gives both teams an out on an ugly situation but without the talent drop? Those guys should be talking.
I never can understand the arguement of not letting go of a #1 pick if it gets you a guaranteed bonafide #1 player. Unstrap your balls and go for it. It's like having a crystal ball before the draft. I would consider this move to be a 2010 draft move. So what if it spoils draft day. Have some vision. This is most likely not going to happen anyway but it would be ludicrous not to do it if the opportunity arises. There is nothing wrong with getting better quicker.
I wouldn't be so hesitant to deal picks for Marshall. We are only a few key pieces away from being an SB contender for the next 10 seasons. At 25 Marshall has at least another solid 8-10 years of being a productive WR barring injury. He is also a legit number 1 for our young qb's to throw to. With Sanchez, Leon, Green, and then a WR crew of Marshall, Cotch and either Stuckey/Clowney/ and Keller. Plus our current D and O Line, why would we need to really conserve next years picks. There is no guarantee that we will get a player of Marshall's caliber in the next draft. Marshall does have a lot of baggage, but with the right mix of coaching and opportunity I think Marshall can mature into a great WR for us.
you raise a valid concern....but that could be said about any player. The coaching staff would obviously have to utilize B.Marshall correctly in order for him to produce. I don't believe that should be a "showstopper" in regards to the Jets making a play for his services. And yes....i want Tanny to have plenty of draft picks for next year as well. Which is why I hope Marshall could be had for lesser picks (like Mr.Electric suggested)....but i'm not going to hold my breath on that one.
Brandon Marshall is a free agent after this season if I'm not mistaken. Sgn plax for a year then go hard after Marshall next off season. Marshall legal matters and hip recovery should be resolved my then. Makes the most sense in my opinion. Plaxico has a proven track record of developing rookie quarterbacks, and turning them elite. Example: big ben, Eli manning. Sounds like exactly what sanchez can use in his rookie year.
