    From Mangini's new conference yesterday:

    On Brad Smith ...

"Brad is working at quarterback now. He is a quarterback that plays receiver some and does some other things. Brad is a quarterback and you will see him throughout camp playing quarterback and in preseason games he will play quarterback. He’s just a quarterback that has the versatility to play other positions. "

On whether Smith is part of the backup quarterback competition ...

    "Yes, yes he is."

This seems to be a major change, in fact he is still shown as a WR on the team roster.

What does this mean? There is a lot that can be read into it. Is it possible he can get cut (they won't carry 4 QBs)? Is he really competing for the third QB position? Is it a smokescreen just to make him feel good?

I said it last year that i liked Smith as QB in the future, this is faster than I thought and I still think he'll be a WR for us this year but I liked the limited action I saw of Smith last year and I have high hopes for him.

Might tell us something about how they view the progression of Kellen Clemens.

This is a switch. I'll be interested to see where this goes.

Yeah, I was just thinking that too. He may be competing for #2.

he'll compete but he wont' get number two yet. at least i don't think so.

mangini knows he wanted to be a qb in the NFL. I think mangini also believes that he can do well at it, but mangini wants him for other things presently.

allowing him to be in the backup QB competition may be both coach's way of laying the foundation for a serious qb competition with Smith once Chad is gone, long long ways away, and saying thanks for laying his body on the line and performing at WR and special teams..

Smith was very impressive as the QB in the final preseason game last year, albeit against the Eagles' scrubs. I love the idea of a legit competition, with him included

Probably right. The only problem with this is that he is starting at ground 0 at QB and not getting any more experience at WR. Hopefully it doesn't make him the odd man out. It really puts a lot of pressure on him to win the competition.

This might open another roster spot for someone like Stuckey, Wright or Frisman Jackson as well.

Don't you just hate when you start a thread and miss a typo in the thread name and then have no way to fix it?

The smart money here, if possible, would be to keep Smith at his #4 reciever role, and as the emergency #3 QB. Saving a roster spot for a KICK OF SPECIALIST! Nugent is a good FG kicker, but his Kickoffs are a liability! To say the LEAST! Now the only problem is actually finding a KO specialist who can put it in the end zone, or hell at least the goal line!

I wonder if Graham could kick off. If nothing else he could beat the crap out of somebody down field after he did.

see i think what this is, is Mangini giving Brad smith a chance to win out the number 3 QB spot. while keeping his WR one. this way they need no #3 qb, and Smith maintains his ability to be a reciever. Basically i highly doubt that Mangini decided Smith wasn't cut out as a reciver, the way we heard about his phenomenal hands last camp, and how well he did in preseason, and how amazing a special teamer he was last year, i doubt he is no longer a good enough reciever for us. This in my opinion, is an attempt to open up a roster spot for us, either to keep that extra reciever, or and extra OL DL or Db, or maybe even that kickoff specialist.

I agree with saving the roster spot but I'm not sure about the kick-off specialist. Given that Nuge is a little weak in that department; I have to wonder if there is another position (eg. Nose Tackle) that we could use more depth at or if we happen to have a very young, talented player that won't make the starting roster but has too much potential to let go. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. GOD I LOVE TRAINING CAMP!!!!

It's funny, I didn't notice the typo until you mentioned it.

It would be cool if he was comPOETing too though...poetry slams during time outs and stuff.

    Sorry...

They may be trying to open a spot to carry another CB. The longer Revis holds out the longer it will be before he's ready to start. If he got to camp on time he probably wouldn't be ready until sometime in the second quarter of the season. If he misses a lot of camp who knows when he will be ready.

I don't know if I like Smith as a possible future QB for the Jets, but backup for now is great to see.

I'd still like to see him involved in plays like he was last season.

This sounds like Mangini is giving Brad Smith a chance only cuz he deserves a chance and not because he really thinks Smith can play QB.

Hopefully the end result of this is Brad Smith actually getting to throw a few passes in games so that his trick plays work better.

If true, this is a terrible move. Smith has no potential as a QB in the NFL, sorry but that is the truth. He got by in college with his speed, but he was never a good or efficient passer, and he does not have the arm strength or accuracy to be a good quarterback at this level. At best he will be a Ray Lucas type at QB, a guy who is a 2nd stringer and can play a few snaps. However at WR, he could already be competing for the 3rd WR spot, and the sky is really the limit to what he could have done at WR. Really disappointed with this move.
