Here are some thoughts from Jets Central.... any thoughts agree/disagree.... I happen to think brad is valuable in other areas, but not well suited to play WR.

04:48PM - Face The Facts, Brad Smith is ?Garbage?
Tuesday, December 4th, 2007 by Dan Walsh

Sorry to those of you who love him because he is so ?versatile?, and a ?slash? player, and whatever else you want to throw between some quotes to make him sound better than he is. The truth is, Brad Smith is a bad WR.

It seems like he drops at least one pass per game, and that can be extremely costly. Off the top of my head, I remember him dropping a critical first down pass this weekend from Clemens, which resulted in an interception. Also, how about that Washington game; lets not forget that; one could argue that he cost the Jets a win. Statistically speaking, Brad Smith catches less than half of the balls intended for him, 48% to be exact.

Brad Smith, everyone?s favorite ?gadget? player; too bad he can?t catch a pass.

ok great. But what's the sense in releasing him? Get another WR for depth and keep brad to see if he can become a decent WR in a couple years. It's not like he's taking up a big chunk of our cap.

Maybe if they actually worked with him FULL TIME in TC on his WR skills, instead of dicking around with gadget plays at QB that dont work, he'd become a better player.

He's Exhibit A in not coaching up the talent you already have on your team (that this regime drafted.)

I'm not sure how much coaching can effect ones ability to catch a ball. I've never played receiver, but that seems like more of a natural talent than a learned one to me. I could be completely wrong, but it seems like that would be the case.

eh, i don't know about that. he's got the agility and i'm sure the awareness to learn route-running.

imagine day in and day out you were catching footballs from those machines for hours on end.

i agree it's natural to an extent, but it's not like he can't catch at all. we've seen him go up and grab passes, make diving catches, etc. i think it is POSSIBLE to learn; whether or not Brad Smith can remains to be seen.

No..... I don't think we should cut/release him.... just coach him better or utilize him more in areas of strength, eg; ST's, taking snaps @ QB for some of the gadget plays they, have been running, granted most teams have figured its a running play i he does, but say mix up the personell a little or actually have him throw the ball on a slant or screen.....

It's a matter of getting the reps. He was already at a disadvantage from not having played the position in college. If you want to change his position, at least work with him full time on it. Give him a real chance to become a player at the position you drafted him for.

One thing on Smith, and I know people aren't going to like this because he has enough on his plate already, but I figured I'd throw it out there....

Why wouldn't we, in the offseason, especially if Ben Graham isn't brought back, train Smith to be the holder for FGs and PATs.... In case of a lousy snap, or the possibility of a trick play, of course... Having a run/pass threat as a holder would be big...

I like the idea of putting a halt to this dumb experiment and getting a real receiver instead.

81 drops the ball and he’s the antichrist; Brad Smith drops the ball and he just needs more reps.

Co-sign. Plus, even though we haven't had any FG's and PATs blocked recently, having him back there would probably make teams less inclined to put a full block. .

That same idea occurred to me as well, I am surprised that we haven't seen it unless they already tried him as a holder and he stinks at it. I'm sure it's something that has occurred to Westhoff.

81 has had 7 years in the NFL plus college and presumably high school to get that one down, therefore, he sucks monkeynuts.

Brad Smith played QB until last year, so yeah, he gets a pass for now.\

Like plasticsloth said, why would you drop a guy that is this cheap, a great special teams player, a usable gadget player, and could one day be a decent WR3? That's just dumb.

He doesnt suck. He is a second year man converted from Qb and is now working with his 2nd qb. Its not like they all are perfect passes like that fade into the end zone they keep throwing. Besdies you dont release the guy he plays qb,wr,rb, and special teams. Som people have no clue.Give the guy a break.

If the opposition has to spend a minute defending a Brad Smith gadget play, it's a minute less they can spend on defending the base offense. And while I will agree that hasn't been such a daunting task this year, it is a consequence of having Smith on your team that I think is valuable.

I also think he can play WR in time.
