Boldin refused a pay cut, so it left them with two choices, trade him or release him. The bad part in this for the Jets, it eats up an already small amount of cap space for the niners.
I'm officially choosing to stay on the "don't trade Revis, work it out" side. We wont get what he's worth out of him, and we could make it work with him. http://www.ganggreennation.com/2013/3/10/4086472/three-bad-reasons-for-trading-darrelle-revis This article also helped make my decision on this, not just the Boldin trade.
This is a window for us on the economics in play. The Ravens wanted the cap space so badly that they let Boldin go for a 6th instead of the 4th he'd likely have brought if they traded him at their leisure.
I think it eats up around 7mill in cap space for the niners who have somewhere around 12 mill left. I believe this puts them out of the Revis discussion.
John figures that he's done winning Superbowls now and is giving his toys to his younger brother. He's not just gonna stand by and watch mean ol' Pete trade for dynamic playmakers in his brother's division.
This is the Cold War all over again. Only this time it's a West Coast deal. Seattle enters the arms race and then SF counters with their own new toys. A 6th fuckin rounder for Boldin??? Like I said, the rich get richer.
Could in theory this put the Ravens in play for Revis? I don't know if they'll have the cap space but they will lose Lewis and Reed in the same season. For a team that makes it's identity on defense could they make a play?
Seriously, Seattle and San Fran are going to be pretty sick nasty this year. If they can sustain their team strength around some young players, I think we could see them become the new AFC north; two dominant teams will battle out for number 1 seeds while they turkey slap the rest of the league.
I think they've got too many guys to re-sign to consider paying Revis the money he's going to demand.
I think its an awesome move by Newsome, get more picks and rebuild through the draft, maybe an off year or 2 and right back to being youthful and competitive, if his drafting continues as good as it has been its a good move, its about the long term not the short term.
I get the deal, it makes sense. They needed to move him and move him immediately to free up cap space and prevent Ellerbe hitting FA. The market was likely pretty limited as you need a team with $6M in cap space right now, and good enough Boldin will report instead of just retiring.
