Source: Former Broncos RT Billy Turner is signing with the #Jets, as @TomPelissero said. Has 75 career starts. Played for Hackett in Denver and Green Bay.
Good addition if he's healthy. Knows A Rod and the scheme. Depth piece but not a starter. Based on what we paid him and his career, he might be a starter: Games started: 2018 27 DEN LG/RT 77 11 2019 28 GNB RG 77 16 2020 29 GNB RT/RG 77 14 2021 30 GNB RT 77 13 2022 31 DEN OL 7
He looks like my junior year HS biology teacher Mrs Russell grew a beard, same and glasses and everything.
Definitely one of those times I'm not familiar with a player at all. Hoping you guys can educate me on this guy and even more hopeful that this is a really good signing.
75 starts last year PFF rated him below average he had almost 500 snaps and only allowed 2 sacks and 1 penalty so at worse seems like a solid depth piece but could maybe start for us. we have a lot of questions at OT and little solid answers but tons of potential becton - 1st round pick was a stud to start his career but then got hurt and has missed the last 2.5 years Brown - was solid last year playing while hurt but is 39 and career almost done mitchell - mid round pick, was expected to be a project and had to add weight but got thrust into a starting spot because injuries and played well for a couple of games, then missed the rest of the year with blood clots warren - mid round rookie. low ceiling but high floor. could be serviceable but rookies are always suspect
Joe D protecting the team from injuries. I like it. The Jets have legitimate offensive line depth, which we could not say a week ago. (McGovern, Tippmann, Warren, Turner)
Interesting. I think the Jets will only be able to keep 10 OL at most, and maybe only 9. Locks (and the positions they can play): Duane Brown (LT) Mekhi Becton (RT/LT) AVT (either OG or OT spot) Joe Tippman (C, maybe OG) Laken Tomlinson (LG) Carter Warren (Either OT) Max Mitchell (Either OT) That leaves 2, or at most 3 spots and roughly 5 players vying for those spots. I think that we can pretty safely rule out Eric Smith and Greg Senat. That will leave the following players vying for those 2-3 spots. Billy Turner (RT) Cedric Ogbuehi (Either OT, but preferably RT) Tristan Colon (C or either OG?) Wes Schweitzer (C or either OG?) Conor McGovern (C, either OG) I don't know much about either Colon or Schweitzer, although I had heard of Schweitzer before). It will be interesting to see between Colon, Schweitzer and McGovern who makes the team. I don't see all 3 making it, unless they keep 10, and the Jets look solid with Brown, Becton, Mitchell and Warren at OT. With Turner having experience with Hackett and the scheme, he may be close to a lock. Thoughts? Comments?
I like the depth, but do we have an above average starting lineup? I've been watching ESPN and FS1 and others and they all sound like they're a little concerned for Rodger's health. That makes me nervous.
Thank you JD! Here is the scoop on Turner. Last year it was basically like Fant: coming off an injury from the year before, never quite got healthy and sucked coming in and out of IR. The difference between him and Fant is that prior to that he had 4 years of solid production as a starter, basically an average tackle. Including two years starting as a RT for Rodgers during his MVP season. Obviously knows the scheme really well. Fant had only one good year as a starter. So the Jets went with Turner, who is not a one year wonder and had multi year success, and I like the move. Didn't break the bank either. @KingRoach This is what I was trying to tell you Fri night, that we needed more help at the position and JD added two solid guys now: one proven vet who started for Rodgers, and one solid prospect. We are in much better shape now than we were then and hopefully AVT doesn't need to play out of position. JD came through. https://denvergazette.com/sports/de...cle_69fd3de0-d353-11ed-bf48-afab96d5284f.html
Right now I think the following will make the active roster, others are total scrubs and will be on practice squad: Duane Brown (LT) Mekhi Becton (RT/LT) AVT (OG or in emergency OT spot) Joe Tippman (C, maybe OG) Laken Tomlinson (LG) Carter Warren (Either OT) Max Mitchell (RT) Billy Turner (RT, RG) Wes Schweitzer (C or either OG) Conor McGovern (C or either OG) There are two more things to consider. Literally every Tackle on this list had a serious injury last year. So, there is a fairly decent chance someone gets hurt and starts on IR. Then we can carry 9 guys. Hopefully not, in which case we may carry all 10. Brown right now is scheduled for 10 mil salary this year. Non guaranteed yet. I don't think JD will pay him this much, there may be more to come on that soon.
You watched last year. When all the injuries hit, the O-line was brutal. AVT was an anchor for that unit. Him being lost for the year killed the offense. I think, when healthy, it is a pretty strong O-line: LT-Brown LG-Tomlinson C-Tippmann RG-AVT RT-Becton Rodgers will help it in multiple ways too, by quickly releasing the ball, and also forcing the defense to play the pass, which will open up the running game more.
Any update on Ben Jones? Isn’t he still in the running to be signed? He’s more credentialed than McGovern, but is it possible this is Ryan Khalil 2.0?
I think the interior is solid but the tackles are all question marks…Brown for age, Becton for durability and the others are really backup types So to me OT is still a huge question if not outright issue. We have bodies yes but no stud (unless Becton miraculously stays healthy for 17 games, which is unlikely if the past is any guide). I do think Rodgers will help a lot, but since we didn’t get a top tackle in the draft this year, seems like that will easily be our top need next year. Again.
Yeah, stud Tackles are very hard to come by, very hard to get in free agency. We went after Orlando Brown, but he chose the Bengals. There weren't really any other stud tackles available. Draft is the most likely option, but looks like we either didn't think Jones was a top tackle or lost him to Pitts. Either way, no top tackle was available at 15. So JD did the next best thing, which is to draft a decent prospect in mid rounds and added a guy who is average starter and played with Rodgers. Without that stud the best we can do is end up with average OT and above average IOL. Unless Becton can get through the season. I am not convinced Brown will even win starting job at this stage of his career, and if he does, he is average player at best at this point. But why I think it is better than last year is that we basically replaced Fant with Turner and Warren. More competent bodies, more chances that someone will be available to play. Maybe we can be like 2021 Jets with Fant/Moses, average OTs, but overall line was at least decent when we replaced GVR at G. As far as next year, let's see what happens with Becton, Mitchell, and Warren. Hopefully one of them will hit, and then we can at least have one OT spot covered longer term.
I really like this signing for obvious reasons. Depth and familiarity with Rodgers and the scheme. Nice pickup.
$10 million is cheap for a starting LT. I would be surprised if JD tries to go cheap on Brown. We can't afford to lose him or piss him off, even if he will just be average this year. Especially now that the Jets supposedly don't need to clear any more cap space due to Rodgers' restructuring, I don't think JD will ask Brown to take a pay cut.
It's pretty obvious Joe Douglas frequents TGG now. I put out my "Potential Post Draft Additions" thread yesterday, a few hours later, he signs a position I listed (OT). Coincidence? I think not!!
