Billick Cans Fassel as Offensive Coordinator
Ex-Giants Coach Was in Second Year With Ravens
    AP
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (Oct. 17) - Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick says he's removed offensive coordinator Jim Fassel from his position.

Earlier, a team official had said that Fassel resigned.

The team official, who requested anonymity because an official announcement had not yet been made, told The Associated Press that Fassel had left the Ravens. His departure was first reported by WJZ-TV in Baltimore on its Web site.

The team scheduled an afternoon news conference at its headquarters.

Fassel was in his second year as the Ravens' offensive coordinator after serving a season with the team as a senior consultant to the offense.

He previously served as head coach of the New York Giants from 1997 to 2003, guiding the Giants to two NFC East titles, a conference championship, an appearance in the Super Bowl and a wild-card playoff berth.

I wonder what happened? Strange move IMO. Somethings up behind the scenes I bet.

Yeah, definitely sounds like a squabble between the two

Fassel is a pretty good coach, he'll catch on as HC somewhere, maybe Arizona or Cleveland after the season.

Think so? Since this job was specifically designed to rehabilitate his career after the poor way it ended with the Giants, I could see this very strange firing hurting his chances of getting another head coaching job quite a bit. Of course, any objective observer would agree that he's about 100 times better than Denny Green, so him taking over in Arizona would certainly be a step up for them, but I'd be surprised if they replaced Romeo Crennel with him in Cleveland.

maybe he realized that kyle boller is actually better then steve mcnair at this point and he had better punch out before the inevitable 7-9 finish.

I'm surprised this Billick/Fassell relationship lasted as long as it did. You have two guys with huge ego's trying to kick start a less than potent offense; just didn't see it working....

Is Romeo's job already in jeopardy?

I think it was just Billick throwing someone under the bus. Billick has to be one of the most overrated coaches, not that Fassel is great.

fassell is gettig what he desrves for what he did to Sean payton in 2000 by publicly stripping him of playcalling duties and blaming payton for the struggles of the O when in fact they struggled against good teams then Fassell took over when they had an easy stretch of games and takes all the credit for their turnaround.

I was just thinking about that the other day when I saw Payton in his post game press conference as a 5-1 head coach. If Billick is/was such an offensive mastermind, I never understood what he need Fassel for in the first place.

Maybe he's now pushing all his chips to the center of the table.

 The media went gag over that comment and the Giants winning after his tirade but there was no mention that he did it heading into a a game at 3-13 Arizona and the final 5 games after his tirade they didn't face one team that ws over. 500 at the time and only faced 1 team that finished over .500 and no playoff teams. What a gutsy move!
