Havent been able to see any pre-season games. I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on Baker as the number one tight end.
now how could you reach that conclusion with all the rave review he has received? I think the position will be a revolving door this year anyway Keller getting plenty of opportunities.
it was sarcasm.... Baker seems to have recovered from his $$ demands. I'd like to see him do well this year to justify the bullshit. He is still the best blocker and receiving TE.
That's exactly right. Right now Baker is the Jet's best two-way tightend. As the season progresses maybe Keller will take that designation if it turns out he's a reasonable blocker to go along with being a downfield threat but for the moment Baker's the one.
I think each has their roles. Baker will be the every down TE. Keller will be put in when we need to stretch the middle. And Franks will be put in on short yardage and goaline situations.
Why is that? Baker runs good routes and has amazing hands. His only down fall in the passing game is he doesn't stretch the field like a Dallas Clark or Kellen Winslow or hopefully Dustin Keller can. Baker has value in passing situations I think.
Thats what I as hoping I read because of Kellers in with Baker some teams will be forced to put in the Nickle package. Should do wonders for our running game. At this point anything has to help
I am new to this site and I am very impressed by the knowledge of most posters here. But I have to respectfully disagree with the assessment so far of Baker. Blocker? Maybe on special teams he's made a block or two but on the line? I see no evidence of this. Good hands? Maybe if there is no defender in the area. I have often stated that I believe he has the highest (interception/thrown to) ratio in the league--of course this stat is not kept. Does no one remember the game 2 years ago where CP threw two interceptions in a row trying to hit Baker? The guy never fights off a defender! What about that Cleveland game a couple years ago (or was it last year?). He came down with the ball in-bounds but did not get the call because he's so out of control. Does anyone remember him breaking a tackle like Pociask did in the preseason? I cannot recall even once in the last five years or however long he has played. I agree of the three, you have to put him as starter, but not because he is good. Keller hasn't proven himself and Franks.., well, I hope he turns it up for Favre. I thought Pociask was the keeper and Baker was the cut.
In regards to his hands, I think you need to re-watch some of the games. Also, that Cleveland game where you said he was out of control...He was out of control because he was leaping in the air to make an amazing catch...which he did.
That's what I'm saying. Although I disagree about his hands. He is very reliable and there's a reason he was dubbed "Baker, touchdown maker". I'm not sure I agree INT/thrown to could be a knock on him either.
