Well boys, are pleased or displeased at this "commitment" to chris baker? I personally think its a good move and just wish the hell WE WOULD USE HIM MORE!!! 12:10PM - Jets Renegotiate With Chris Baker Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 by Gary Grund Dave Hutchinson of the Star-Ledger is reporting that the Jets renegotiated TE Chris Baker?s contract last month. The deal still runs through the 2009 season as it did when he first signed it in March of 2006. The team basically front-loaded his contract moving a large amount of his salary to this season. His base salary went from $850,000 this season to $2.37 million. Baker has 29 receptions for 305 yards and three touchdowns on the season.
I would have liked to have him locked up through 2010, but this pretty much ensures he'll never be a cap casualty.
That's what I was just thinking. It seems like an interesting move, as in it seems like maybe they're looking to cut or shop him? I'm no expert on this, but I hope they just try to use him more. I think he's a solid player and would rather stick with him than try to find another TE.
Really? It sounds to me like they're prepping him to be cut.... I don't know much about the salary cap, but from what I understand, the length of his contract didn't change, and they moved most of the $$ to this season.... Meaning after this season, moving forward, he could presumably be cut without too much of a cap ramification... I'm not sure if this is correct, could someone confirm/disprove this theory for me?
If they wanted to cut or move him, they would have just done it. This move would only save them about a million against next years cap. Really not worth the effort. Sure, they could now cut him for free down the road, but now cutting him doesn't really save us anything.
Yeah, I didn't think they'd be doing it now, I figured it meant they wanted to lower his cap figure next year, and thus make him expendable.... I HOPE that's not not the plan, as I think Baker is very talented, and could be a pretty good weapon if utilized more...
You don't give someone a bonus before you fire them, even in the wacky world of NFL contracts. They're locking up Baker and bless 'em for doing so. This is the best decision our front office has made since the draft. Baker turns and runs after the catch slower than any player in the NFL but he is still a great blocker, a great pair of hands and and a guy with Antonio Gates' endzone skills. They REALLY need to sign Kerry Rhodes to a deal soon, though. The man's value has risen every game this year. I say lock him up now before we're obliged to make him the highest-paid safety in the country.
Great point on Kerry Rhodes.... anyone know when he is signed through? I can't see them fukin up his contract.... they'll sign him.......
It's an okay signing, I like the fact that the team is taking a cap hit this year when we have left over cap. Now we need a complete O-line so he doesn't have to stay in and block
Front-loading it was great, I definitely do not have any problems with Tanny when it comes that the structure of his contracts. I also like Baker a lot, it will be nice when they finally use him with regularity... or should I say IF?
This is great news. I'm a big fan of Baker. He gets the job done when asked to. He blocks well, and the best part is, he can catch. Definitely better than a certain someone we once called our TE (coughBechtcough). I'm glad Chris will be a Jet at least until after the 09' season.
If Baker had more speed he would be one of the better tight ends in the league. He got great hands, and Clemens throws him the ball more then Chad did.
I'm glad they were able to keep him. His low receptions totals is not because of him but because of the lack of commitment to him in the gameplan - which seemed to have changed with Clemens in.
Yes, it is great news that Baker is at least getting his dues. Rhodes is a must sign this offseason too.
