Jets sack chef - 'Green' dish nix By REUVEN BLAU Last Updated: 7:19 AM, December 5, 2010 Posted: 12:26 AM, December 5, 2010 Seems not everyone with the Jets has Rex Ryan's appetite -- or sense of humor. A team official discovered that a popular kosher steakhouse on the Upper West Side was serving "green on green Jets salad" and "Jets dragon roll" and ordered them pulled off the menu. Jets spokeswoman Jessica Ciccone called Prime KO Japanese Steakhouse at 217 W. 85th St. a few weeks ago to complain the gourmet Gang Green fare wasn't authorized by the team. "We were really shocked," said restaurant spokesman Steven Traube. "I think she was just being spiteful." It didn't matter to the team that the dishes were created by a rabid Jets fan, restaurant chef Makoto Kameyama, 49. UN-FARE: Chef Makoto Kameyama was told no "Jets"-named items. Kameyama grew up in Tokyo playing football on his high-school team, the Mean Elephants. On Sundays, he'd watch NFL games on a big screen at the Sony Building in Ginza. He came to New York in 1980 after his older brother took over his father's sushi restaurant. "I wanted to see football with my eyes," he said. In April he was named the executive chef at the restaurant. The steakhouse hopes the team backs down, at least until the end of the season. It even added a Jets latke, a potato pancake topped with basil, to celebrate Hanukkah. Either way, Kameyama said he'll be rooting on his team in its showdown tomorrow night with the New England Patriots. Ciccone did not respond to a request for comment.
This crap was just on after the game/before Fatesecaa. Its obviously copyright infringement therefore the jets are 100% in the right.
But is it really infringment? It says JETS on the food...C'mon. What's the difference in that and bars who have a big JETS poster on the door and neon signs that say JETS on it? I'm sure they get a cut of a $30 neon sign but IMO, this is going overboard. The article says the chick was being spiteful, might be something deeper to this story
They have to protect their brand, but considering its a common word the restaurant might have a case here.
Whats the difference about a bar, how about theyre not selling it ? What if I take green jerseys and just slap "Jets" on the side and just write down a players name and number on the back ? Youre profiting off of their image thats what.
If the Jets didn't stop it the NFL would have... The league is about $$$$ and Goodell isn't losing one cent
Exactly, It's not like he's using their logo, images or anything....his food has the word JETS in green, like guacamole. It's pretty small of the JETS.
True, but how does this hurt the teams image? I have seen it a hundred times in the metro area, Jets, Giants, Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Devils being used in the names of sandwiches, drinks, entrees and other food items. Many of the owners of these places are fans and just want to express their fandom anyway. Sure, maybe they profit a little bit off of it, but I doubt droves of New Yorkers are going into Mr. Kameyama's restaurant just to have some Jet rolls. I'm also sure if the Jets walked into Kameyama's establishment, then he would give them a discount or make the food free, if he can afford that.
That's not what he's doing. Like the JETS, you're making it bigger and worse than it actually is. He's writing the word JETS on his food....seriously?copyright?
Its the teams name and Logo (if you saw some of the pictures its quite apparent) If the guy wanted to sell food with the jets name/image he had to get permission. He didnt.
except do the Jets have the word "Jets" trademarked for use with food? you have to show use to have a trademark, nevertheless protect it. if not, the Jets have no brand in this matter to protect. of course, the answer is they don't. you can't TM the word Jets, it is too common, so unless he called his dish NY Jets, they have no legitimate position on this matter, even if they have the pocketbooks to sick lawyers on the so-called offenders.
Pretty lame what they're doing here. I don't even think the Jets are correct from a legal standpoint.
Not what the article says. Obviously they can't use the logo without permission. It seems to me that's not what they're doing. here's the link They're calling various dishes "Jets X".
you simply can't use the team's name to make a profit. period. whether his intentions are good or not is irrelevant. besides that, say the owner / chef goes nuts, the restaurant gets a bad rap, and the jets name is still associated with it? the media has a field day since the jets apparently support the restaurant (their name is all over it), and it becomes a general PR nightmare. i understand this is a very unlikely scenario, but if you're the jets you have to look at the downside. protect your brand.
It's NOT their logo, I saw the dishes on TV and not one of them had a logo. It just said JETS on food.
