Are the Jets just not as physical as advertised?

The Jets aren't winning in the trenches anymore. Two weeks ago MJD had a respectable game (albeit in a blowout), and D-Mac just rushed for a career high 171 yards on only 19 carries. This week the Jets face another beast in the backfield--Ray Rice--who also has an imposing O-line blocking for him.

NYJ is 25th in rushing offense and 31st in rushing defense, granted it's just 3 games.

The Jets banged-up and underperforming O-line has created very few running lanes and have almost gotten Sanchez killed. Sanchez is already the 2nd most sacked QB in the AFC (behind Henne), and now he gets to face Ngata and the Ravens D. Ouch.

I hope the Jets can recover quickly and beat New England the following week. God bless.

we shut down Dallas' run game, Jones-Drew had all garbage time yds and McFadden gashed us. 1 bad game in 3, I'm not worried yet.

uh no. the team looked tired from the get go. Doesn't mean we aren't physical, i can only remember 3 games under the rex regime where we have been out physically played. Miami on monday night in 2009, Pittsburgh in the AFC championship, and Oakland last week.

McFadden had one 70+ yard run where Cromartie was held enough to create some spacing. Besides that, McFadden had 100 yards on 18 carries. Thats really good, but its not alarming like the 19 carries 171 yards sound.

But I do agree, our DL is not playing to its potential while the OL is hurt.

I was not impressed by our defense the first week so that's 2 out of 3 weeks and the offensive line has not looked good since the pre-season. You have to be honest, we have issues that need fixing, it was not just one bad game. We could easily be 1-2.

This is an open question. The Jets clearly are not dominating on the line of scrimmage on defense and they're being dominated on offense. It's hard to see them going to the playoffs if both of those things remain true.

    its typical.

fact is we are in a better position than we were last year. LAst season we had a disaster in week 1, dead offense, heavily penalized defense. at least in this past game our offense was alive, we just had too many penalized and mcfadden broke some long runs. this is the hardest portion of our schedule, even if we are 2-3 i still like our chances for the playoffs. fact of the matter is 3 wins is the most any team has right now and 3 wins will not get you a playoff spot, everyone is in it at this point.

McFadden is a decent Running back, and so is MJD. I am not that concerned with our Run Defense, as I am in effort. I don't see the passion when I watch the Jets D.

Who is the leader on the field?
Who is kicking everyone's ass when they fuck up?
Ryan has proven he will bench a player when they don't perform (Rhodes), but who is grabbing the face mask and correcting intensity on the field?

Remember we have a Rookie playing DE, and we don't have that beast at NT. I can see Ellis being that overpowering NT, and Wilkerson looks pretty good.

McFadden also gashed us with speed, not physicality.

McFadden and MJD are both better than just decent backs but I agree with your main point. That was the most frustrating thing about Sunday's game - the defense just didn't seem to have any intensity. Maybe it was just an off day but it didn't feel like I was watching a Rex Ryan defense.

The Jets will never win a game for the rest of their existance, obviously.

Clearly, no team in the NFL is allowed a "burn the tape" game. Because when Green Bay put up 3 points against the Lions last year in a domed stadium, it was curtains.

Defensively we'll see, but until we get the offensive line fixed we won't be winning games offensively in the trenches

We gave up over 220 yards on the ground, that's bad no matter how you spin it.

well a RB like DMC and a mobile QB will expose a team like the jets with so-so speed on the defensive side of the ball - especially the perimeter.

i think we are starting to see the effects of the depth issue at certain spots like TE and OL. the years of quality over quantity combined with a couple questionable draft picks will have the jets in a pickle if mangold is out longer then expected and someone else gets injured along the OL.

Our defense is plenty physical. Brute force physical.

The problem is that the speed of our defense is dropping of a cliff as the years go by. We have the d-line personnel you want in a a 3-4 team, but with the exception of maybe Wilkerson (who still isn't all that fast), our defensive linemen aren't running down any ball carriers.

The real problem lies with speed at the linebacker and safety positions. It's never a good thing when the short white guy is the fastest of any of these dudes.

Our linebackers are as slow as a linebacking corps are capable of being- I have love for all of them, but all four starters lack agility and speed.

What this defense needs (and I know this is going to sound ridiculous, because it's what every defense needs) is a Pat Willis or a Troy Polamalu, somebody with the speed to roam and make plays sideline to sideline while the big, ugly slow guys do the dirty work. David Harris isn't that guy. I have a ton of respect for David Harris, but he's not the elite linebacker I once thought he was. He's a damned good ILB, but he's not a gamechanger. I'm not sure making him a rich man was a good idea. Maybe that will change if we can upgrade Thomas or Pace next year.
