As free agency begins the Jets have yet to make a splash. Is that to be labeled as a bad thing or maybe something that has somewhat of a silver lining to it?

Take this with a grain of salt, as this is solely my opinion, but I feel that finally we have a GM who is in fact attempting to create a franchise that will win consistently for years to come. So far, we have yet to sign a big time free agent. Why? Well, as anyone who is a fan knows, we do not have the cap space to do so. Tanny left us with a bed full of terrible contracts. Is that a bad thing? You bet your ass it is, but maybe there is something good that will come out of this.

Idzik has taken the role as the new GM. He seems to have a very strong grip on the financial aspect of the job and, from what we have heard from numerous sources, he has a good grip on player evaluations as well. So far, as it seems, the older and slower players are either walking or being released. Not only has this cleared cap room, but it has put us into full rebuilding mode. We have lost 2 interior lineman, each with their fair share of concerns. We have a RB who will be a free agent who is unlikely to resign. A corner who although may be the best defensive player in the NFL, could result in us receiving a good amount of draft picks. Linebackers who were slow and old and a secondary who may or may not be injury prone, but sure as hell will be demanding a lot of money.

So what are we left with? Well, we are left with enough room under the cap to sign some young diamonds in the rough in hopes of them becoming useful under Marty's offense. But what really are we left with? We are left with a GM who is looking into the future. We have signed a QB who, at first, may seem like a dumb move, but on the contrary, helps fill that void we have until we can find the permanent player we need. Cheap, proven to be effective, and a temporary fix. We are left with young talent on the defensive side of the ball, who need to step up and prove their worth, but most of all, we are left with draft picks that are more important to this franchise than anything right now.

I laugh at the comments circling this board. People frustrated or complaining that we are doomed for years. This is what we always wanted. We had a GM who dug a grave for us. We had a GM who had no aspect of the future and was solely concerned on winning in the moment. We had a GM who built a team that appeared in back to back AFC Championship games to then finish with an even record and then a losing record the two years following. Woody Johnson, although hated by many, seems to have finally made a decision worth a damn. He has signed what appears to be a new GM who has a head on his shoulders. Who is looking at the future, rather than the moment.

Call me crazy, but I am excited for us again. Even if we tank it this year. I am excited to see what Idzik has in store for this team. We have a new OC who demands respect and we have a new GM who might just know exactly what he is doing. I see good things on the horizon, but again, this is just my opinion.

I think Idzik has approached things correctly so far... But its only been a little over a month. Ill decide on Idzik after next years draft to see if we are heading in the right direction, until then and even farther, so many things can happen.

Completely agree, but so far it seems promising.

A lot on here are freaking out because we have not made a move in free agency and are losing people left and right. I am not so worried

Idzik reminds me of Sandy Alderson to this point. Mainly because of the way he keeps the media in the dark, but also because he likes young talent a lot, and seems to want to clear up as much cap space as possible.

Sandy has me excited about the Mets again (a difficult task), so I wouldn't mind the Jets taking a similar approach.

I do like what I am seeing and hearing thus far,but since 2013 seems like we will not be competitive I really hope to god we are worse than The Jags and Raiders mainly because we will most likely need a QB and those are the only other two teams that could potentially be worse than us and snag that QB in the 2014 draft.Just sayin we really need that franchise guy under center within the next couple years.

I think Idzik is doing a great job so far. We are keeping our young talent and letting go older players. He seems like he knows what he is doing with the cap space too. I would love him to have a great draft this year. And i think we can still be competitive we still have a competitive team

    That's key.

We are bringing in the youth and hopefully with a solid draft, all the talent we need. We just need a QB to take this offense by the balls. If we get that, we are golden

Team won 6 last year, with every pass catcher hurt, and two old guys in the front 7 that are now gone. And a non OC OC.

Returning Holmes, Hill, Kerley in the slot, Edwards at 4, and Cumberland replacing Keller, is light years ahead of Gates, Gilyard, Rueland Schillens..
    plus, MM > Sparano.

And Hill and Howard, Coples, will have a year under their belts...

So barring injury...tell me how this team is worse off than last year

We have yet to see a Revis trade or a single draft pick. I like that he has cleared the older, slower guys and is looking to build a young hungry team (sound like the Seahawks much?). That said, he has had little choice but to make most of these moves. Tanny left a mess and cleaning it is simply step one. Lots of work to be done, but tis a good start.

I hope he is taking a similar approach to what has worked in Seattle. Build a young team with competition at every position all the time. Make player work thier ass off to keep those NFL jobs.

That's exactly what I am saying LOL

We MAY tank this year, but again, I stress the word MAY. I am not worried at all. I think with a solid draft we could be wild card contenders.

Let's hold our collective horses. Remember Tanny started out being deliberate and abstaining from the "splash" moves too.

Again, this is all based on what we have all seen so far.

This is just my opinion with my evaluation. I think we might have signed the perfect guy for the job

I admire your enthusiasm but it usually takes a few years before you can get a good read on someone. Once this offseason is all said and done, we still won't know what we have until we've seen the product on the field, then seen how he reacts to that product with another offseason, then see how that reaction pans out as well.

I understand exactly what you are saying.

So far, in my opinion, things are looking up. Like I said, I am excited to see what happens. I also think this draft is the make or break of his career. This draft is so important

Lemons into lemonade so far. The Holmes restructure was pretty amazing if it was as reported. The Cro restructure helps the Jets in a lot of ways but it also has an effect in '14 that is hard to factor at the moment.

Every cut that he's made so far was pre-determined given the Jets cap situation. The hard work was in the restructures and in the draft to come.
