Front page of http://cbs.sportsline.com features a picture of Faneca, saying Jets tremendously overpaid. Then there's the story: http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/story/10686372 In a nutshell, he says teams should draft talent and try to retain it, instead of signing other team's FAs to big contracts.
Pete Prisco has no say, because his articles are the most ignorant pieces of garbage I've read. Please do not post his bullshit on this board Yisman... it hurts my eyes.
Who cares what these stupid ass sport writers think. If we win games this year, they'll be on the wagon again, saying "they made great moves this offseason". F'em!
Why bother having free agency? Let's just set up a fee structure and when a team picks a player, he'll know what he's going to make for his entire career. Simple answer.
No one wants to spend money foolishly, but here are three points: 1) Deficit spending is one thing -- spending within the cap is fine. What's the prize at the end of the season for having not spent money on talent? "They went 4-12, but they won the prize for biggest bank account at year end." Great, wonderful! If you're ensuring that you're not jeopardizing your ability to sign your young talent, then why not supplement your roster up to the cap? 2) Inflation, Prisco, inflation. If the cap goes up every year, then next year the price of the position you just filled will go up as well. Just like Hutchinson on the Vikings is not the highest paid guard after signing his whopper of a deal two years ago, Faneca won't be the highest paid guard next year. We may be getting Faneca on the "cheap" when he suits up in '09 and '10 (tongue in cheek). 3) Rightly or wrongly, every football decision is not 100% grounded on the field. The new stadium needs to conjure up excitement, and while the decisions seem grounded from a football perspective, other factors are at play.
Precisely, the writers will be there to bless us and call us smart if we win and they will be there to say we made the dumbest signings in the history of the NFL if we lose. The sad thruth is the writers have something to write about either way.
actually he should just review the 2001 thru 2005 drafts and tell us what talent is there to re-sign...... jil
The whole argument is deceiving, because good teams usually have a very good reason for keeping their own players... because they are GOOD! What the hell are the Jets supposed to lock up Adrian Clarke and Justin McCareins? You need a good team before you can act like one.
I agree with this post 100% I think the Jets sat back last year to see what effect the new CBA was going to have on FA. It was impactful. Salaries when through the roof. This year they decided to plug as many holes as they could with the "current" over paid price. knowing next year it will be much higher, as the cap will again be significantly higher. I doubt they will do much in FA next year, but rather wait a year or two till the inflating cap puts them back in the chase. The point about the new stadium, I think is very significant. The cap is only one consideration in the financial aspects of a football team. The bottom line is the real reason. These owners don't buy these franchises anymore for the love of the game. It is a billion dollar business. If Woody is going to be charging $5,000 to $15,000 a seat PSL's, he better be putting a very good football team on the field, or he will be sitting there by himself.
so is prisco implying that the steelers are better without faneca? i mean he can't honestly think that letting him go was a good move.... so if bob sanders got signed by another team and not the colts, the other team made a foolish move?
He is 99% right. My philosophy on building a football team is to build thorugh the draft, and then fill in spots with free agents when you are ready to make a playoff run. So in that regard, he's wrong about the Fanaca signing. He's a perfect signing. If the Jets drafted a guard sometime on day 1, he'd still be a rookie playing between 2 young players. The best bet is to put a seasoned, very talented vet between Mangold and Brick, and that is just what they have done. What Prisco is talking about is how the Redskins have operated, and how the Phins operated under Speilman. And, truth be told, how the Browns have handled things this year. Any year you don't have a first day pick is going to have negative effects on your ballclub down the road. That is what put the fins in the horrible position they are in. They traded picks away in desperation, and it cost them bigtime.
we drafted and kept ellis, bt, mangold, dbrick, baker, bender, and a few others, and added only 3 via FA. drob would be in there too (and jenkins out) if drob played anywhere nere a 4th overall pick. yeah, we paid a lot for the fa's we got, but there was a line of other teams right behind us hoping to do the same, including parcelles. if you got it, flaunt it. if not, sign 'em up!
A-freakin-men. Prisco is a HACK. His columns are nothing more than collections of cliches and he is the biggest bandwagon-jumping weathervane going. Flgreen, you make a great point, and Tannenbaum even said something to that effect, when he said that spending is cyclical.
As a devout Steeler fan I can offer you this. I don't know the Jets team well enough to know strengths and weaknesses but I can tell you the truth about Faneca. He is a good run blocker and a bad pass blocker. A couple facts to support that. 1. Big Ben is one of the harder QB's to bring down and he was sacked more than any QB in the league last year. 2. An inordinate amount of those sacks came from Faneca's side and from Faneca's man. Time will tell how he does for the Jets but odds are he is being severely overpaid.
Seriously, it's like he is providing the answer to the wrong equation. I'm not saying Faneca isn't overpaid, or even that he will be successful for us, but Prisco's arguments are always the same half-boiled retardation every time I read them.
2nd, third, or 4th hell yes to this sentiment. Prisco is a complete piece of dog shit that should never be read, unless your looking for comic relief. He, once again, is so far off base its silly.
Yeah, we're going to continue paying the price for that for another 4 or 5 seasons. Chad wasn't getting hurt the first time in preseason if Thomas was in that gap and he was probably a much better QB from 2003-20whenever if that didn't happen. My nick came into being because of the Thomas moves (Randy and Bryan.)
