Before we made the playoffs last year the plan was to rebuild. Then we went and overacheived and put everyones expectations through the roof. Take a look at last year's draft (Year 1 of the re-build)- Clemens, D'Brick, Mangold, Leon Washington, Brad Smith and Eric Smith I haven't analyzed the rest of the league but it would be hard pressed to challenge the quality of that draft. In fact, it doesn't get much better than that if Clemens turns out to be our future. So cut Tangini some slack and laud them for the job they are doing rebuilding. In two year, 6 of last year's draft picks will proably be starting for us. That doesn't happen too often. Then throw in Revis and Harris and that is 8 out of 22 starters...
You can't call Leon, and the Smith's starters so that is 5 potential starters and only 3 current starters. I think you make a good point though. We rebuilt, then they thought after the season that the job was done and tried to target specific players thinking the rebuilding was done and they had enough players when in fact we couldn't afford not to keep or even amass more picks and get as much help as possible. Can't say I am disappointed with the draft picks though.
This is a good point. There might not be 8 out of 22 starters yet, but definitely 8 very good players out of 22. We're rebuilding and if we bolster the lines in the draft and FA we'll be having completely different conversations next year!
To me, the funny thing is that the season we're playing like we're rebuilding (this year) is the second year and the season we should've looked like a better team that went through it's growing pains was year 1. Very, very weird...
Great point! Keep building the lines. We already have EXELLENT recievers. A good special teams and at the very LEAST a serviceable QB (whichever way they go) If we continue to build the lines, we will challenge for the title within the next 2 years. All of our "skill players" are very good, if not pro-bowl level. We just need to continue to work on the OL and DL.
Don't get cocky We could have the best players in the game. If Mangini continues to coach poorly he needs to go. (He earned some time from last year but I'm getting annoyed.) Look at San Diego!!!!!
The rebuilding will be done by next year. All that there is left to rebuild is the lines, and thats not too tough a task. The draft has to get a NT or a LG as the first pick, after that has to be a pass rushing threat at LB. Whatever of the two above that are not picked up (NT, LG) will be addressed in FA. And continue to bulid those lines, depth too. How bout some big DE as well. C'mon Kenyon Coleman? Big Slowwww Shawn Ellis?
You can't just rebuild through the draft. Aside from Thomas Jones, I can't think of any real talent we have acquired aside from the draft, though. Can you? It's nice to have great drafts but you can't just build a team with rookies from the ground up.
