Tom Brady, yes, I get that, but I really want to say fuck this move to a 17-game regular season. It makes no sense, nobody likes it, it's awkward and weird (every other league I can think of has a regular season with an even number of games so every team has equal home and away games) and it is such a blatant drive for more revenue, in a game that is already drowning in money, that its crassness has no limits. A move to 18 games would make infinitely more sense. Infinitely. But best of all would be to stop endlessly toying with the best sport in the world, because the only way from here is down. They are killing the game with commercials already. Now they are giving me a headache by throwing in a single extra game. I instinctively know what a 7-9 season is, or what a 10-6 season is. What the hell is an 8-9 season? Or a 10-7 season? Fuck this.
The final week of the season is a joke anyway with most teams playing out the string and softly tanking. The rest bench their starters in anticipation of the playoffs. Why would you want an extra week of that?
you mean to tell me there is no special rate? The rates are the same for new and existing customers? I would've never known that
It's because no one watches pre-season so they can squeeze that much more money out of ads and consumers.
I know why it is being brought in, but it’s a classless move driven by sheer greed and it’s ugly. 17 games?!
Personally I think a 16 game season is perfect. If they want to add games then why not make it 18 games and reduce the preseason. How do they determine who get the extra home game with a 17 game season. They should leave it at 16 games.
It's just a layby on the way to 18 games. In a fw years they'll roll out the same arguments you made about home/away etc... and throw in that 18th game.
I don’t doubt that, but why not just do it now? We’ll be stuck with a few years of weird records, like when you look back at 1982 and 1987.
I’m going for be in the minority here but, another week of betting, fantasy play, sitting on the couch rooting for the Jets to win or lose based on the standings. Having a hard time seeing the downside here.
Gamblers are who they are counting on, really. If the season starts adding more games, we end up getting to an 18 game season, we're going to see a SB with as many depth players starting as actual starters because their bodies have broken down even more than the 16 game season that most players are struggling with. You'll start seeing teams resting players like the NBA, hell maybe we get treated to a SB where it's 2 backup QBs facing each other. Then the league will have to crack down on all that unnecessary contact that football puts the players through and reaches their dream of the ultimate flag football game. Money is ruining the NFL and has been for a while. But hey, all those extra gambling lines will kick ass.
If you don't have a problem with the further watering down of a product that's already been in decline
No, but I also know the betting limits are typically fraction of what they are for regular season games because of the nature of preseason games i.e. no sophisticated game planning, unpredictable roster management and teams not necessarily playing to win.
Was watching that Al Davis 30 for 30 show last night... man football was so much better in the 80s/90s. shocking difference. I imagine maybe it was even better in the 70s but that's before my time football like a shell of what it once was, right down to the effort and desire of players and owners. It was sad to watch. The league needs a new commissioner and to put their eyes on the product instead of just the spreadsheets. yeah financially I'm sure things are good now but damaging the quality of the product is going to come back to bite them. Nobody wants to watch 7-9 Patriots vs. 4-12 Jets in a week 18 matchup with backups everywhere on the field
That's about the only positive. But these dipshits needed to start expanding rosters and the cap better start flying upwards without all the crying about lost revenues from the pandemic. They're still plenty profitable. They need to leave the schedule alone. The game already has a massive problem with injuries and keeping players healthy in bigger games that they're struggling with.
I’d say the product is more watered down because of the rule changes than length of schedule. It’s a quarterback competition now. You’d get the same product if you reduced it to 12 games.
