I admittedly am not as conversant on the Xs and Os as I am about other subjects regarding our beloved dumpster fire, so I'm not sure whether I should be pissed that this guy was returning kicks. I feel like I wanna be seriously pissed at yet another SOJ classic. Someone tell me I'm wrong and why, or otherwise validate my confusion about why the 1A running back (not saying much) was doing grunt duty. Sent from my SM-F956U1 using Tapatalk
I think the one position coach that has so far avoided any controversey has been our STC. The unit just has not produced. There is this overriding question as to why Pritchard has not been promoted yet. I'm starting to wonder if its personal. The Jets are known to let personal issues get in the way of player development. Corley, Mims, Wilson to name a few. Makes you wonder why we haven't seen Arian Smith do the one thing he's known for since that penalty several games ago.
So Glenn is dumb enough to let the STC convince him to let Allen return a kick? Or was that only loosely related? Sent from my SM-F956U1 using Tapatalk
It’s definitely aggravating now, but the kickoffs are wide open with the new rules. Teams experiment with them and I don’t think it’s that absurd to try him out back there. Deebo Samuel, Jaylen Warren, Bucky Irvin, and maybe some more have taken cracks at it over the past couple years. Tyreek returns a punt here and there when the Dolphins have been down. Our return game has been utter garbage though. Blame it on the coordinator or the shitty depth personnel but I agree - something needs to change. Weirdly enough the kicking game on all fronts has been good.
We have very little depth and barely any talent. On offense we realistically have 4 players that are a threat of any kind and Allen was one of them. Also it’s almost certain we’re losing Breece, we desperately needed a good look at Allen to see if we can rely on him. He’s not a kick returner, new world or old. I could live with Davis if you want to try something, and most definitely Arian Smith. Ffs, someone saying Arian can only run in straight lines, are we kidding here. Catch the ball, hold the ball, and run a fucking straight line to the other end zone. If you get tackled on the way hold on to the fucking ball. It’s the little details. That’s what makes for great coaches. Guys that tend to every corner of every detail. Field awareness, situational awareness, player awareness, team awareness. A great coach sees the big picture and says no, I can’t afford to lose Braelon, find another guy.
Eh, it’s nitpicky and a freak injury really. I’m not trying to defend it as much as your response makes it seem but shit happens. At the end of the day, he was the second to last pick at the end of the fourth round who has averaged 3.7 YPC in his 110 NFL attempts. Glenn should be killed on some things this year including the defensive performance among other things. This is meh.
This is one of those times where we need a laugh emoji and not just a like button. Sent from my SM-F956U1 using Tapatalk
I have no idea what went into that fateful decision. The reality is that it makes no sense at all to bring Braelon Allen back this year. We're not in the post season conversation or any conversation other than how bad this season can get. Let Braelon have the surgery and take the rest of this season off. Breece walks at the end of the year and you'll have a rehabbed, healthy Braelon ready to step in and fill the role as a feature back.
Why the hell isn't Pritchard on the roster. He can return kicks and punts, and might help in the passing game. I know he muffed a punt in preseason but he is better than what they have. Whoever had the idea of Allen returning kickoffs should be fired. Takes us back to the Kotite days when he slow- footed Reggie Cobb returning kickoffs. Be lucky if he made it out to the 20.
The Giants had the brilliant experiment of All pro CB Seahorn returning kicks against the jets in a preseason game. He tore his knee up and was never the same CB. You protect your stars and don't foolishly expose them to special team tacklers.
Allen is far from a star. He’s a mediocre backup running back at best at this point. I wanted the Jets to draft him after watching him in college and it sucks he got hurt. But again, Glenn should be killed on a lot of things. Having a backup RB return a kick (when our kick return team has been awful mind you) isn’t one of them.
