He had a good arm and was a tough QB. I always liked him, especially when he stuffed Steve Serby in a locker.

"NJ is for losers....and Re-Todd". I still remember that sign hanging up at Shea on the last game there before the Jets moved to the Meadowlands. I remember it being a love/hate thing with Todd. It's hard to forget the 2 gift INT's to AJ Duhe in the Mud Bowl game!!
5 INTs in that Mud Bowl game plus the season ending INT at the GL the year before in the WC game. He had all the tools but always made the big mistake. I still have alot of great memories from him as '81 is the first year I can remember games and in '81 and '82 we had excellent teams but looking back we had SB caliber teams in those 2 years and w/ better QB play we could have made a run.
Very big Todd fan. I always thought the Miami Mud Bowl game was overblown in that Woodley was picked off three times in that game also and neither offense did anything. The one that absolutely broke me was the Buffalo goal line one in the Wild Card Game because Todd was absolutely great that second half and the Jets were gonna take that game and deserved that game. He made a terrible read on that last pass after playing like a superstar that whole second half. What frustrated me also was that he was a great runner. Very underrated at that and when he would pull it down and run, he'd make alot of things happen. If he would have pulled it down and ran against Buffalo instead of throwing that pass at the end, he scores. But this guy, while mistake prone, had alot of good moments also.
I completely agree. Good point about his running ability. He was never known to be a good runner, yet when you look at the old games, he was a very effective running QB. That Buffalo game you refer to is STILL the biggest Jets heartbreak of my life! Todd was fantastic in the comeback only to lose in the last seconds. Brutal!
True, it was one bad pass but there was only :14 left w/ no timeouts. If he runs and is stopped short, the Jets run out of time. Remember the field was a mess, I don't see him scoring on an 11 run that day. He had Gaffney wide open in the back, all he had to do was loft the ball, if Gaffney doesn't come down with it, the Jets still have time for one maybe two more plays.....
...except that Todd was picked off 5 times. One of the Duhe picks went down to the 7 yard line after an unsportsmanlike penalty on the play. Phins ran it in on the next play. Another of Duhe's picks went for a 35 yard TD. That game was such a shame because of how good the J!E!T!S! looked against Cincy and Oakland. We couldda been the road warriors that year. Damn cheatin' Shula
Obviously Duhe ran one of his INts in but I don't remember miami's other Td starting at the 7. I am pretty sure that was the drive that Miami fumbled around midfield and Gastineau recovered only to have the officials rule it a non fumble. Was that non-fumble on another drive?

Miami held the Jets to 139 total yards and forced 5 interceptions. The game was scoreless until the third period when Duhe intercepted a pass from Todd. Aided by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Jets, the Dolphins advanced to the New York 7-yard line where Woody Bennett rushed into the end zone for a touchdown. Woodly also played like crap in that game as I recall. It really just came down to one or two bad plays for us which decided it. We definately had more talent. Unfortunately, the speed we had on offense couldn't overcome the sloppy turf. Shame too....that was our best hope for a championship in the Todd years. 1983 was just as disappointing. We had the same team on the field that season and completely under achieved. I still can't understand what happened to us that year...1983 was to be our year and we blew it.
I always liked Todd. Namath was at the end of his rope when I started watching the Jets, and when we finally got good with Todd it was the first time I ever saw the Jets not suck. As badly as the 1981 season ended, it was such a great year. The TD to Barkum at Shea vs Miami remains one of my all-time great sports memories, also the Green Bay finale at Shea. The Sack Exchange, Todd, McNeil, just a great year.
