Here's a breakdown of Maybin getting off the ball on his first play on Flacco First observation - SPEED SPEED SPEED! He gets off the ball and up the field extremely fast. In the 2nd picture he is a full yard further up the field than any of the other Jets defenders. Obviously their approach is different but when watching this play you really notice his explosion at the snap. Then as he gets to the blocker he throws his hand up causing Bryant McKinnie a second of hesitation. At that point Maybin makes his turn towards the QB and beats McKinnie causing Flacco to run for his life. A great play by Maybin that was caused by his speed at the snap.
not trying to be a buz kill but if you look the players in the 2nd photo are doing a TWIST!! the End and the DT are twisting so they are not going straight up the field like maybin. I do agree he did do well but this is not a good example!
whatever. i like it. hes a rag doll, but hes fast. we havent had a speedster at that spot in a long time. he cant do much, but brings something that nobody else on the roster has. his first step is whats confusing me though. i never ever remembered(in buffalo) him recognizing the snap of the ball. hes taking off faster than everybody on the line.
He's also doing something pretty much no one else on this team has done- get to the QB consistently. 7 rushes and 1 sack fumble and another one disrupting the QB...Thats pretty damn good
Consider Maybin a consolation prize for the whiff at Ghost. Out of two busts, at least one is contributing unlike the other.
Hopefully if he's used early in games and can establish that he can beat his man up field it *should* start to catch the tackle cheating which would set up a spin move underneath. Or at the very least, teams have decide who they want to double.
You have to think that the longer he stays with Rex the better player he will become. What I like about Maybin is that it seems he isn't happy with the bust label and he wants to get better. Hard work could pay off and we may end up with a solid player. BTW awesome breakdown Murrell.
good thread. you can't teach speed, and that's what i like about Maybin. Strength, size etc. that can be increased through training and eating (and PEDs). even as a situational pass rusher, the guy has value. IMHO he can only get better as he learns the defense and the system. Rex will coach em up. People can nit pick and say he can't do this against more athletic LTs etc or stop the run, but time will tell. Considering we're not paying him much and we didn't waste a draft pick on him, any production is positive. and in the limited snaps he's played he's had a huge impact. that bodes well for the future
Maybin, in my opinion, is a great pick up. He's hungry, he wants to avoid being a bust so he's going to bust his ass every game and he's going to be open to learning how to get better and I think with a guy like that it makes him worth the small risk of giving him a roster spot. He hustles hard and his speed is unlike anything we have on the defense. Outside of Revis and Cromartie, our defense is slow as shit. Ok, Jimmy Leonhard isn't that slow but he doesn't have amazing speed, Eric Smith might as well be a fucking turtle, our linebackers aren't speedy, so it's nice having that speed off the edge. If he bulks up a bit and retains that speed, our defense becomes very dangerous because we'll finally have a pass rusher than can disrupt the backfield. I know I'm heaping lofty expectations on that kid, but I do think we can make something out of him.
Agreed, I believe with Thomas out now, we will see alot more of him. That will only improve our overall pass rush, whether or not he is the one applying the pressure.
My sentiments exactly. Has the natural ability that it takes to succeed. Now it's time to see just how much he improves with the proper coaching. Only time will tell but IMO worth the effort just for his situational contributions.
