http://blogs.nbcsports.com/home/archives/2009/02/farewell-to-the-nuge.html "The Jets offered placekicker Mike Nugent a contract but he's decided to test free agency, reminding us of what a stinker of a draft the Jets and then-GM Terry Bradway had in 2005. The year before, the Jets should've been in the AFC Championship game had it not been for mind-blowingly bad clock management and hands-around-the-throat kicking from Doug Brien. On the verge of greatness, right? Well, Bradway did his best to kill all momentum for the club and hamstring the future on a couple of days in late April. First, he traded away the Jets' first-rounder to the Raiders for Doug Jolley, who might best be described as looking like an awkward an extremely uncool football player because he didn't wear gloves or tape or wristbands or anything. Then he went out and started only seven games in 2005, caught 29 passes for 324 yards and one TD, got shipped off to Tampa Bay, and caught only one more pass the rest of his career. At least Kyle Brady, another Jets tight end synonymous with Draft Day Blunder, could block a little. The rest of the picks? A nice mix of serviceable, injury-prone, and underachievers. Only one of the picks turned into a good player, and only two remain with the Jets. For pain and anguish, read on ..."
Yes add into that DEW, Santana Moss, JV, B. Thomas & it gives you a good idea why we have won nothing in the last 6 years or so.
Yes, things can be a LOT worse. The Jets have experienced some epic mismanagement in recent years. Shit, that's what happened? Damn. I know, people will complain about me reminiscing about some short yardage and goal line back who played for only two seasons, but I love power backs and he would have had a future. Houston would have made those 3rd and shorts a hell of a lot easier the last two years.
I liked Houston a lot too. I knew he had a thyroid condition and then later heard that he was quitting football, which came as a surprise, but I figured that had to be the reason. Those years our running game was pretty horrendous yet he still managed to be productive and for that he's got my respect.
If not for that trade for Jolley we wouldn't have Kerry Rhodes. That was a bad draft overall(very Parcells-like) but when you get one star out of it it can't be that bad.
why does an article about 2005 and a completely old regime have anything to do with now. 06 to the present has looked brighter than any other regime.
That was a real shame. I really liked Cedric Houston. He was crying on the field (I forget against who now). I guess the pressure wasn't worth it to him. He made some money for what he was good at, and I'm sure he treats his family well. I hope he's doing OK.
Not a big loss even when healthy nugent wasn't very good and i thought blew when kicking off. Keep Feely or draft or sign a guy.
I think the thread title should be changed to "A reminder to how bad things were" Ever since Tanny took over, there has been a pro bowler in every one of his drafts in either their 2nd or 3rd year.
JV? are you serious champ? vilma is a stud he is just an elite 4-3 MLB... how can you call JV anything but awesome
when it comes to kicking, i think whoever punts should also kick off. here's why. the field goal kicker uses touch and finess to "place" the ball, wind considered, between the uprights. much more of an 'art' then just 'boooooming' the ball down field. punters need big legs to drive the ball high and deep. sound logial that this same leg can drive the ball high and deep off a tee for kick offs. punting and kickoffs require an 'explosion of power' where kicking fg's requires much more finess, foot placement, concentration, wind, angle, ect.
This is the hindsight positive spin on it. I'm glad we got Rhodes, but it's not like they made the trade KNOWING they would get Kerry Rhodes out of it. Besides, who's to say we wouldn't have taken Rhodes in the 3rd Round, instead, had the trade not been made? The point is, whatever results the trade yielded afterwards (e.g. Rhodes) shouldn't be taken into account; what you look at it is their thinking at the time of the trade itself, which allowed a pick that got us Rhodes -- who could have just as easily been a pick that busted.
They didn't make the trdae knowing they would get Rhodes but it still gave them ammo to move up to get him and it's not like Heath Miller became a great player or anything. he is average at best. At the time all the rumors were we wanted Justin Miller and Nugent, we moved down about 20 spots, got a vet TE, picked up some later picks and still got Miller & Nuge. Obviosuly those 2 players didn't pan out but that doesn't change the fact that is was a good trade and still would up working out for us.
Try the HC at the time & the GM & the scouting dept for drafting a speedster when you did not have a QB with a strong enough arm to make him a top notch weapon
