When I travel to Wembley this year for the Colts Jags, I'll be wearing my No.28 jersey. I said the same last year at the Jets game, no one at Wembley will be wearing the jersey of a classier individual. Proud he was a Jet, and proud to carry his name across my back.
#28 was/is an N.Y.J legend. One of the greatest 3 down backs of All-Time (an even better person). Really doesn't get any more classy than having Curtis Martin represent our Franchise. He was so much fun to watch. Literally carried our offenses on his back. Like Patrick Ewing of the Knicks throughout my childhood days it'll be impossible to convince me #28 won't go down as my All-Time favorite Jet. 2-100 is always up for discussion but Curtis Martin was something special.
Great back. I just never thought he was hall of fame. He never wowed me. Reliable, durable, never fumbled. I was always pissed we got rid of Adrian Murrell, plus I grew up with my dad saying he's no freeman McNeil. Now I suppose my dad sounds stupid. After watching the program, he's really a great man. Although his ring of honor day I happened to be right by him and his entourage and he refused to sign my football in the parking lot.
He didn't wow you? What the fk were you watching? Curtis Martin ranks 4th All-Time with over 14,000 rushing yards behind only Barry Sanders, Walter Payton & Enmitt Smith. He only played for 10 years too...
Freeman was electric. So fricken fast (except in the mud lol). As far as Martin, I'm kinda with you on the "he never wowed me". He was so smooth you hardly noticed him. And Martin never ever looked for contact and he was great at being tackled, he never took a huge hit. Running style, he was the complete opposite of Chris Ivory. With Martin I remember being surprised by how many yards he had after the games.
Was a good show. I think it aired last year though. I've seen it before. "Boy Wonder". Good nickname.
Actually, McNeil was not that fast as evidenced by his 4.65-4.7 times in the 40. He had amazing vision, patience and tremendous balance, stop and go agility and a remarkable jump cutting and slashing style. His ability to accelerate in and navigate through short area bursts was indeed electric but he was frequently tackled from behind on longer runs. His backfield partner, Johnny Hector, was a much faster albeit less talented/gifted running back. Unfortunately, despite his great talent, he lacked Martin's physical flexibility and iron-man durability causing him to be injury prone and thus limiting him to only two seasons of 1000+ rushing out of his twelve year career with the Jets.
Martin was the total package. Between the tackles, outside, catching and blocking. He was always there for us, even when he had not one but two high ankle sprains, he played through it. There were times when the Oline that Bradway totally neglected had failed to open running lanes, and even I got frustrated watching him run into a wall, but he never complained and kept on running and he'd end up busting long runs in his 30s that you'd look and say "damn, he can still do that??". Freeman McNeil was fucking fool's gold compared to Curtis Martin. Best back this team has ever had, bar none. And a stellar human being to boot.
CM is the reason I am a Jet fan today. Great football player, but most importantly a great human being. Taught you that you can look at adversity right in the face and knock it the fuck out. He was easily of the most consistent players I've ever seen, and what I loved most was his low profile. Was always there when you needed him the most [cept that fumble -_-] Top 3 Jet of all time, next to Maynard and Namath.
