Met Jetcane, very nice guy. I'm not sure how good either of our stuff will be today for several reasons: We were not as focused on stuff while we flapping our jaws a lot, the team was in shells, and a lot of the work was against the scout teams. But, here goes... Pretty low key practice, with a lot of prep time coaching the team about Minnesota's tendencies and schemes. Kendall got some snaps at LG with the ones, at center with the two's and I think they may just keep him around. Clarke took most of the first team snaps at LG, we were surprised to see Wade Smith take a few at center with the two's in 11 on 11's. I was hoping Vilani had shown enough to get some time with the 2's at center, but he's still with the 3's and the scout team. Wade Smith simply looks aWful snapping in the shotgun. The cap W was intentional! On the D line, I think Coleman took almost all the snaps at DE with the 1's, and right now could be called the starter, of course subject to change. We saw some 4=3 stuff today, but not enough to get a good handle on who was lines up where. Maybe Jc caught that... Sorry, but I still say Pouha is playing well. Haynes is an albatross. I DID see him turn a running play inside and collapse the line, which for him is a rarity, but good to see. At other times he left his assignment and followed the flow of the linemen only to have a misdirection running play run right over his area of reponsibilty. This lack of discipline may be why his NFL career has so far been a disappointment, because he sure has the speed and skill set to be a very good football player. If any CS can coach him up, it's this one. Bowens still gets in on the nickle with Vilma at LB, and there is a rotation going on with the DE spot across from Ellis , as well as at NT in pass D formations. Sometimes it's Coleman, sometimes DRob, sometimes Hamilton and sometimes they swap em in and out so fast it's hard to follow. Spencer got a lot of time at OLB with the 2's today. usually he's at ILB, but today it was mostly Kassel and Harris at ILB. Schlegel still runs with the 3's. Westoff is always screaming at Harris on ST's. On the offensive side.... I was impressed with... ready... Ratliff. He made some really pretty passes today. Washington ran into the flat (think it was Leon) and Ratliff threw the ball right where it should be before Leon even turned around. Perfect timing play. He has a strong arm, but has touch on the ball too, unlike Tui who has a rocket but has no touch and poor accuracy. Coles does like to talk more than he lets on... on a questionable PI play that didn't get called (I thought it should have been flagged, Jetcane didn't) Coles yelled at the ref "That's why you don't work on Sundays!" Frisman had opportunities to make some difficult catches, difficult but catchable balls, and whiffed on several occassions. He gets open, but I'm not sure he is enough of a playmaker. He beat the CB down the left sideline, and Clemens put the ball on his outside shoulder instead of inside... tough catch, but it went right through his hands. With Mangini's comment yesterday about how much WR's can contribute on ST's will make a big difference in making the final cut, and Stuckey getting some punt return action, Stuckey clearly has an edge on Jackson at this point I believe. That pass I just talked about... Stuckey makes those catches. He has two things that jump out at me... great hands and silly good open field moves that leave DB's looking for their socks. Brad Smith took a few snaps at QB, but not what I call regular snaps... these are plays designed specifically for him. Looks like the QB experiment is over, as they don't even let him take any snaps at QB on the scout team. Something I didn't like today... I saw McCariens take several plays off. In fact one time, he stopped running his route, and when the pass was completed to a WR that was on a short route, McCariens didn't bother to even fake a block. He had quit on his route even before the ball was thrown. I've said this before about him... he has to show me more in a game before I get back on his bandwagon. Dyson got beat deep, but came back with an INT in the 11 on 11 two minute drills, with an INT on Pennington in or near the end zone. Clemens 2 minute drill ended on downs. The defense won today. We couldn't see what went on... our view was blocked, but it looked like a non-kicker made a FG that ended the practice after only 2 hours and 10 minutes. The whole team was hooting and hollering... will have to wait and find out what happened. This was unusual... in shells for a one a day. I like the one a days because they are always in pads and hitting, but not today, so not much to talk about regarding Ryan's blocking abilities or the lines in general. I will say this... they are using Ryan a LOT as a H back, moving him around, having him set up behind Baker in GL sets, with Barnes lead blocking from the FB spot. That's a lot of bodies laying leather on the opposing D's left side. Jetcane said he wasn't going to do a report today... I hope he does, I like reading his take on things. Can't think of anything else to add...
Thx for the report TBJ Any news on the 30 or so odd people we have riding bikes on the sidelines ATM?
With the Revis news, which is great!... I will add another note although I'm not sure how many people might be paying attention to ol T-Bird's report today...lol... Jetcane and agreed, Clemens locks onto his #1 WR at the snap, and completely gives away who he will throw to. Good LB's and DB's will read his eyes, and cover his first option like a blanket. He is definitely a work in progress. These are the sort of things that Pennington does NOT do that makes him an effective NFL QB. He looks off his first read, and that helps his first read WR to get open. I knew there was a tidbit or two I'd forgotten to include.
Same group... TJ, Miller, Smith, Kowalewski, Tutt etc... good news is that there were no additions to the bike riders!
Ryan as an H-Back does not suprise me. HOpefully we get to see him play some H against the Vikings. I'd like to see how they use him back there
T-Bird, you've outdone yourself with this report. You make me look like the rank amateur that I am. Seriously, you have real NFL-coverage talent, and I am not kidding. I always tried to put a lot of work into my reports (even if I did take notes the day you and I and Kurt met there), but there is no way I'd even come close to this kind of coverage. You are a legend, my man. 24 months from now, Training Camp will be over here in New Jersey. The shoe will be on the other foot then. I'm asking you now to try to make the trip from NY (like I made from Jersey), because we'll miss this kind of coverage otherwise. Your reports just keep getting better and better. There is no way anything coming out of camp commercially even compares!
He lies. I'm really a bastid. :jets: It was good meeting T-Bird, too, he's been one of my favorite posters for a long while now. I'm not sure how good either of our stuff will be today for several reasons: We were not as focused on stuff while we flapping our jaws a lot, the team was in shells, and a lot of the work was against the scout teams. But, here goes... I always enjoy meeting someone I know from a MB, and talking MB stuff as well as Jets tc stuff. T-Bird is good people. Pretty low key practice, with a lot of prep time coaching the team about Minnesota's tendencies and schemes. They have demonstrated this week that they spend a lot of time learning the next opponent's tendencies, and seeing it on the practice field. This is part of the excellent preparation the CS does, imo. Once it becomes written that Kendall is going to stick with the team, and play wherever they tell him to, his teammates should throw him in the swimming pool with his clothes on to break the tension. This lack of discipline may be why his NFL career has so far been a disappointment, because he sure has the speed and skill set to be a very good football player. If any CS can coach him up, it's this one. I agree Pouha is having a good camp, and showing a good motor. He's been on ST too, so he's getting a lot of work in. I think Spencer and Kassell are in direct competition for a LB spot. They usually arent on the field at the same time. Westoff is always screaming at Harris on ST's. Harris is Westhoff's ST beyotch, and he will make him into a good ST player if Westhoff has anything to say about it. Since Smith gets no reps as scout QB, I mentioned to T-Bird that either Tui or Ratliff may stick, because they need a scout QB and Smith apparently aint it. maybe Ratliff stays on the PS. Coles does like to talk more than he lets on... on a questionable PI play that didn't get called (I thought it should have been flagged, Jetcane didn't) Coles yelled at the ref "That's why you don't work on Sundays!" It was a bang bang play. i thought I saw it well, and thought the receiver touched the ball before the CB (Collins?) made a good play on the body, knocking him to the ground. It was a 40 yard pass, one on one coverage, and they were running away from us. Frisman had opportunities to make some difficult catches, difficult but catchable balls, and whiffed on several occassions. I am very impressed with Stuckey and I like the way he handles himself on the field. Fris is expendable unless they move 81, which always seems to be in the air. Brad Smith took a few snaps at QB, but not what I call regular snaps... these are plays designed specifically for him. Looks like the QB experiment is over, as they don't even let him take any snaps at QB on the scout team. No scout team reps at QB. It would be putting too much on one guy to have him do all that and QB the scout team, too. I didnt notice that, but 81 has had a strong camp so far. -snip- Jetcane said he wasn't going to do a report today... I hope he does, I like reading his take on things. Can't think of anything else to add... This is all I've got today.
Thanks Just wanted to say 'Thank You' for your daily reports during training camp. Being a diehard Jets fan in Miami, you make me feel like I am there watching. I really appreciate it. Thanks. Rusty
You sell yourself short here, 227! Your reports I also think are very informative and I liik forward to reading them.... now that that circle jerk is done LOL.... I will have to get to Jersey a few times in 2009, if I live that long!
The circle jerk is over? Jesus! Seriously, NJ won't be that long a drive, believe me. I'll get you good directions and I'll even scope it out ahead of time. The quality reports have to continue! We need to organize a "Reporting Staff" next spring that commits to x-number of camps and agrees to post in a timely fashion. These reports, especially yours and Jetcane's lately, have been really exceptional.
Jetcane makes a good point here.... they don't even trust Smith to be the scout team QB. That means that Tui or Ratliff have to make the cut. Tui isn't practice squad eligable, so he's either cut or stays as the #3. Ratliff could do it as part of the taxi squad, but he could get stolen if the Jets do that. That third QB spot is becoming a problem, now that it appears Smith can't do it. Tui is awful. I'd rather see Ratliff stay. He has a chance at being an NFL QB, while I honestly don't think Tui does. Based on how the snaps were dealt out today, I'd venture to guess the CS sees it the same way at this point too.
I also noticed that about Clemens. He definitely locks onto his first read much too often. I think he will grow out of this with the proper coaching though.
birddogging your first read has been, in my opinion, the most prevalent death knell for young QBs. It would seem so easy to get past it: don't lock on to your first read, but sooooo many never do. I'm not scared yet, but I certainly think that's worth paying attention to for anyone watching Clemens at any time - I think I'm goign to go back to the Atlanta game and watch that aspect a bit.
As always, thanks TBJ (smacks inside elbow)...This is the part that makes me really excited: This is how a good coach teaches that "intangible" stuff of which champions are made. "Team building" activities or drills that get the guys used to rooting for each other...Good stuff! Oh, yeah: Did anyone really think that J-slack changed his stripes? I still really hope we can get a 4th for him or even a disgruntled lineman (cough*Faneca*cough)...we have enough quality receivers not even counting smith (he's still a convert project until next year) for this year.
