https://es.pn/2IniSDU Great article outlining the Jets spending lavish but not spending to mortgage the future with dreadful contracts. They will have around 100+ of cap for next off season So do you think it's a good thing ? Most of the guys they signed likely won't be here in 2019 or is it a bad thing because it likely will be more roster turnover?
It's a good thing. If Mac picks a good QB, he'll have a lot of money to spend next offseason. If he picks a bad QB, the new GM will have a lot of money to spend next offseason.
It's great, as long as you're spending it on the right players. We don't need to be bringing in the next Albert Haynesworth.
Well it’s definitely going to be enticing for the next GM/Coach who comes here next year if Mac bombs this draft and Bowles can’t win more than 6 games...
This was not a good free agent class. Cousins was arguably one of the very few worth spending any sort of $ on, and having not done so we could end up with a better QB anyway. Even our top free agent signing, Johnson, is only a middle tier free agent. Not blowing your wad on a weak group is shrewd.
How can he bomb the draft? The drafted QB is going to need at least two years to judge, we don’t have any seconds, and does anyone really expect starters from the 3rd rounders and down that if we don’t hit on is going to get Mac run out of town?
I'm guessing that if the Jets don't become a playoff team by the end of the 2019 season, Mac is a goner. For better or for worse, 2018 is a year of development and progress.
I'm trying to comprehend how having over $100mil in a checking account could be a bad thing.. If nothing else, that much FA cash can buy Macc time to figure this GM thing out from a drafting perspective. Again, even though Macc been around the league for a bit, he's still learning how to be a GM. We're seeing it now with a reboot from when he was hired. At least this time Macc was ready to implement Plan B which IMO, shows growth as a GM. Who knows what the future will bring..
He needs to add at least 2 starters from rounds 3-7 and at number 3 that the kid is a FQB. Also his FA additions need to be impact players
Agreed.. Macc only has ONE job to do this draft.. Identify and draft our FQB! Nothing else in this draft really matters from a Jets perspective as holes can be fill by one year rentals until 2019 when we won't be under any pressure to trade dp's.
Like I said, whether the QB is going to be the franchise QB or not won’t be known on this season alone, so Mac wouldn’t get fired for that after the season. And two starters from rounds 3 and down? Is that what most teams get out of the draft in those rounds? That’s an honest question that I have no idea whether it’s the basic expectation of all teams going into the draft that they will get at least two starters from those rounds.
I don’t think it’s unrealistic to expect 2 starters from 5 more picks from the rounds 3-7 plus Undrafted FA. So far his drafts have been sub par and imo he needs to show his scouting skills and hit on a few mid-late rounders to show some credibility Your basic assessment of not being able to tell till if number 3 is a FQB or not is accurate and quite possibly might buy him some time. However, if number 3 gets beaten out by Bridgewater/Hack/Petty for the back up role and isn’t pushing McCown for the starting job I’d think he would be on the hot seat.
completly disagree. johnson has been a top 3 CB in the NFL for years. he graded out as the number 1 press corner in 2017 as well and the rams chose to keep him over jenkins as well another pro bowl CB
