Trying to jump start some draft talk. Add your top player (Rd 1) for the Jet's 2012 NFL draft The Jet's select...........Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, FSU Some may be scared of Jenkins and compare him to Brown and Wimbley, IMO, he's a more talented player. It's way early and no FA yet, but if the Jets don't address the 3-4 OLB..it's a no brainer in 2012's draft. Ferocious pass rusher that had over 20 TFL and 14 sacks in 2010. The guy is always around the ball and is a big hitter. Perfect player in Rex's defense, good size and has a great motor.
Projected Needs: WR, DE/OLB, S My selection... Robert Lester, S, Alabama We still need someone that can cover the tight end. While Jim Leonhard is a very solid starting safety, he's simply not big enough to be able to cover some of the 6-5 250 lb. TEs in the league. We have yet to truly replace Kerry Rhodes. We've tried through free agency (Pool), we've tried with our own players (Smith/Lowery) but we continue to get burned by the tight end. If we don't get a player like Dawan Landry this offseason this will be a major position of need come next year's draft.
I see him taking a Brandon Graham-type stock jump as the draft gets closer and falling out of our reach unfortunately. He's just a beast that doesn't stop. I think the Chiefs are going to gun for him to bookend Hali.
My guess at this early stage is going to be..... Ray-Ray Armstrong S UM. He's a playmaker in all aspects of the safety position and someone Rex would love to have to help ballhawk the deep secondary as well as provide random in-the-box run support and maybe even safety blitz occasionally to throw in a monkey wrench. Also would not be opposed to Jeff Fuller WR Texas A&M (if Braylon leaves) or trading down for an extra pick or 2 and grabbing Kenny Tate S Maryland or Mohamed Sanu WR Rutgers. I'm hoping in rd 2 if we don't go OLB we can get Vinny Curry from MSU. With some added strength and pass-rushing refinement Curry could be a force in year 2 or 3.
2012 has to be the year we bring in another pass rusher. I'd like to see our front office look at Matt Roth in free agency, but if not, someone like Brandon Jenkins, Vinny Curry, Bruce Irvin, or Devin Taylor would be nice.
Im going with two choices here, lets see which one you all like. 1st Rounder A) Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama. Upshaw was tremendously productive for Alabama last season, racking up 52 tackles, 7 sacks, 14.5 TFL, and 4 forced fumbles. The kid has excellent strength and should kill at the combine with his high level of athleticism. Coming into the NFL many teams could put him at different spots, MLB, OLB, Sam, or Will but what we do know is he is extremely versatile and for a team like the Jets who value players that can play many positions, it simply improves our defense that much more. IMO the 3-4 OLB position would be perfect for Upshaw, he has the speed and a plethora of pass rushing moves. The Jets should be looking for him at the back end of the draft. 1st Rounder B) Jeff Fuller, WR, Texas A&M Fuller impressed me most against LSU in the Cotton Bowl catching 7 balls for 83 yards against, IMO the best CB too come out in the last 3 years, Patrick Peterson. He has a excellent frame and has above average speed, he is definitely a "go to WR". Now this pick depends on whether or not we resign Holmes or Edwards ( In my opinion its Fuller if we sign Holmes and Broyles if we sign Edwards). Either way this kid is one hell of a WR prospect and with a draft full of them its our best interest to get a great one early in round 1.
^ Jeff Fuller is a beast, but I'm still hoping Tannenbaum will figure out a way to bring Braylon and Holmes back.
I agree completely, I would love to have them back but IMO (depending on the cap) it comes down to this, Would you rather have: A) Edwards, Cotch, Kerley, Cheaper FA WR ( Stuckey, Sims-Walker, Legedu Naanee) + Revis, Cro, Wilson or B) Holmes, Edwards, Cotch, Kerley + Revis, Wilson, FA CB ( Al Harris, Ike Taylor, Josh Wilson) Both are virtually the same, either improve on offense or improve on defense. Its hard for me to choose but with the Jets lack of a pass rush I think secondary improvements could prove to be more important.
I disagree that they're virtually the same. Option B helps Mark Sanchez way more. I'm a big believer in Kyle Wilson, so losing Cromartie isn't a big loss IMO. If Ryan can lure one of his ex-Raven corners to NY, this defense will be fine - Chris Carr, Fabian Washington, Dominique Foxworth, and Josh Wilson are all free agents. Throwing an experience corner into a nickel role isn't a risky move.
True, but this team values Defense 100 times over, but I do agree Sanchez needs as much help as possible because his growth is extremely important to this franchise. Now I like Wilson as well but do you really think this defense will rely on him as much as they could with Cro? I mean the kid is going to be getting targets ALL season long, even is he is a solid corner, thats one hell of a fucking job. All I could see is the Jets bringing in a decent Vet CB for a 2 year deal to help rotate with Wilson, if that is possible, and a solid vet is out there for no more than 3-5 million, Im 100% on option B.
I'm still in favor of a pass rush specialist in Rd 1. If the Jets season goes totally in the shitter, highly unlikely, I would look to get one of the stud WRs in the top ten. Watch out for Brandon Lindsey out of Pitt, good pass rusher. Lindsey could crack rd 1 and is rated higher than Sheard by many last season. Product of Revis' High School. I like Upshaw, but prefer Jenkin's upside.

I do feel the similar, although either Id be tremendously happy with. BUT I will say this, I think he will work on his strength and bulk ALOT this season in order to be drafted higher as a 4-3 DE. Even though his size doesnt exactly translate to the 4-3 scheme I wouldnt be surprised if that is what he bouts for. If he keeps his same frame he's a 3-4 OLB all the way.
Throwing a scenario out here: Jets are picking late in the first round (hopefully 32nd) and at pick 13-16 Quinton Coples ( like Quinn) is avaiable, it costs a 1st and 2nd, do you trade up for him?
Bruce "Almighty" Irvin Just a terror for OTs, elite speed, but also underrated power. I've saw him on several occasions last year push the LT all the way back to the QB with his bullrush. Will play a full time role this year and has put on around 10 pounds since last season. He oozes potential, but he's still learning the position(former WR). Biggest question is can he hold up against the run?
I don't doubt that at all , just throwing out the scenario since our overall #1 need next year is a pass rusher and with a great one our D would be tops in the league for years.
If we don't sign Roth/Lawson/Barnes this year we definitely have to look into drafting an OLB. I'm still hoping Westermann can surprise us this season but I don't think at best he can be anything more than an adequate starter (holds his own but no difference maker). Otherwise: WR is a possibility (because I don't think we'll re-sign both Holmes & Edwards) RT if Ducasse shows no improvement in year 2 (and if we lose Hunter) CB if we lose Cromartie S if a really good player is there (although I think we'll be pleasantly surprised by what we already have on the team at this position, especially at FS). maaaybe a ILB to replace Scott down the road (his playing style wears him down a lot, his contract gets mad starting from 2013, good talent in the 2012 draft) maaaybe a NT if we can't re-sign Pouha (he's going to want a good amount of money and who knows what we have in K. Ellis. In a perfect world we solve our OLB needs this time around with Roth + Westermann improving his play and in the 2012 draft we get a guy who'll play for Sanchez the next 10 years... many WR prospects to choose from but I'll go with Mohamed Sanu from Rutgers. 1) NJ trifecta 2) first Muhammad and now Mohamed? Best thing about Lindsey is that he's a high school OLB turned DE turned Rush OLB, so there will be less to project at the position and more proof. There are a plethora of Rush LBs in the 2012 Draft...
