Taken from Today's NYDN: Wow.. just wow. In the season that this Jets team should be entering "elite status", we just might be looking at a lockout instead. Doesn't that figure... Anyone got any more info on this?
Lets throw a hypothetical out: Say the season goes into a Lockout but they agree to a new CBA and are able to have a 10 game season. The Jets go 7-3 and make the playoffs. Then they go on and win the Super Bowl. Would it still feel the same as World Champions?
ok that article is a bit misleading... on march 5th, if no new CBA is reached, 2010 will be uncapped... then the league official and the players association and whoever else have ALL of the 2010 season to negotiate.. if by then they do not come up with an agreement, then there will be a lockout in 2011... there are some people saying that even if there isn't an agreement, there still could be football, not going to happen.. in 2011 the salary cap expires and then football becomes baseball, with the top market teams literally buying players and the small market teams dropping out.. because the NFL doesn't want that to happen, they will lock the players out and keep everything were it is.. This is serious though, and a realistic possibility.. there have already been agreements between the NFL and CBS and FOX and other networks about a lockout.. if there is a lockout the networks would still pay the NFL, but because of that, payments over the next 5 years or so will be reduced... it hard to make anything of it right now because there really isn't any urgency.. even though it going to be an "uncapped" year, there are already rules and regulations in place from the last CBA (the final 8 and final 4 rules and so on).. i think that serious strides will be made next season once things get a little more down to the wire.
Right now it looks like there is an excellent chance that the 2011 season will be abbreviated. Will it be a 9-week season like 1982 or a 15-week season like 1987? Or will the situation be like 1974 and the work stoppage will end before any regular season action is cancelled? In 1974, a number of star players signed with WFL teams. The Dolphins dynasty was wrecked when Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick, Paul Warfield, and Bob Kuechenberg signed future contracts with WFL teams effective after the 1974 season. With those key players playing in another league in 1975, the Dolphins missed the playoffs for the first time since the merger. In 1982, the inaugural USFL season was right around the corner. The rival league was to begin play in the spring of 1983. In those two situations, the players had the option to join another league. In 1987 that wasn't really the case because the only two options were the CFL and Arena football. This time the situation seemed to favor the owners and as a result we saw replacement players and the games continued. Only one week of regular season action was cancelled.
we probably would, and then people could put an asterisk next to the super bowl win and everyone gets to bash the Jets even after winning the super bowl...
Absolutely. Think about how often the Mud Bowl gets mentioned on this board. That came in the 1982 season. The Jets had a 6-3 record that year. If 7-3 and a Super Bowl win in 2011 was to feel cheap or something, then why did we let the Mud Bowl bother us?
The older I'm getting, which right now feels decrepit, the more I'm inclined to go with "don't worry about what you can't control". That said, if its going to happen to THE franchise making THE run, its going to be us, so this is a firm indicator that I should have a punt on us in 2011. Being a Jets fan has to be the most perverted past times on the planet.
One of the barriers in the negotiations is that some owners of the wealthier teams wouldn't mind a baseball type FA system. So the owners don't agree on how it should be resolved. Until they can agree, I don't see how any progress in negotiations can happen. They do agree that they want to reduce the player's hsare of asll revenues to get reduced below the current 60% level they currently enjoy. That doesn't necessarily mean less money for the players, as revenues continue to grow. The player salary pool would continue to go up, but at a lesser percentage of overall revenues. The NFLPA keeps insisting that the teams open their books to them. They want to know how much profit the teams are making. The owners don't want to share that info. That is the biggest stumbling block right now. Both sides are dug in on this issue. The NFLPA refuses to agree to any reduction in their percentage of revenue, even if player salaries are guaranteed to increase. Basically, they want to dictate to the owners how to run their franchises from a profit standpoint. I think the owners are willing to go the entire 2011 season with the players locked out. The NFLPA is telling players to save 25% of their 2010 salaries, which is laughable. They should be banking more than half of what they make this year. I just don't think the owners are going to muve much, and are willing to outlast the players for however long that might take.
Fans of their divisional rivals do it all the time. It would give Pats' fans ammo to fire back with if you mention Spygate.
Fans of divisional rivals will look for anything to put an asterisk next to a rival's win. Even if it was not a lockout season Patriots' fans would be saying "asterisk" because the league clearly was not competitive enough for a "real Supah Boowl".
What the hell is going on? All of these bastards are overpaid anyway so why are they risking another lockout?
TONIGHT I AHM DRAHKING VOWDKA AND TAWNIC!! NO WAN ELSE CAN DO THIS AS WELL AS I CAHN! THEY AW-OH AMAZED BY MY ABILITY TO DO THIS!!
Yup, I said that on another thread... this isn't a 2 parts negotiation (Owners vs Players), it's a 3 parts negotiation (small team owners vs big team owners vs players)... this makes everything EXTREMELY difficult.
Yep and add to the fact that our team is in great shape to make a realistic push for the SB, I can see the real possibility of a lockout happening. Im usually a pretty optimistic person but this is not looking to good. It would be great if the fan base would let it be known that this not acceptable. If we have no football...then when you bring it back we will not attend the games or spend 1 dime on any type of NFL product for the following season. I will watch it on tv or online and thats it. They have themselves (players, owners, NFL execs) a great cash cow and their greed will undue it all.....
I have faith that this garbage will be figured out. Players have a short shell life to make their millions and I guarantee they wont want a year off.
After the last NHL lockout I have faith that the owners are greedy, the Players are greedy and stupid, and that in the end only the Fans will get the true shaft by missing what we love dearly, perhaps for an entire season. I had previously held Sabers season tix, purchased the NHL package so i could watch my Isles, and travled to a few other games a year. Since the lockout I have not spent a Dime on NHL hockey, but still attend some local OHL games. The fans will get screwed. The owners have prepared for the lockout with the networks and have major leverage. The players need to give a little or this whole thing is going to blow up on us. Its sad really, and of course fucks the Jets over. The football gods would have it no other way.
A lockout would work wonders for a dismal economy. Thank you spoiled overpayed atheletes that can barely speak 3rd grade English! Just what our children should admire!
