In 1997 Parcells took over the Jets. Sure - the big differences are that Parcells was already a winner and there were some veteran additions. What I am saying is that watching camp - and then the first two preseason games - what I see is a team trying to build a foundation. They looked HORRIBLE against Tampa, and really good against Washington - even if they couldn't get the ball into the end zone as often as they should have. We are going to see this all season - growing pains. Some good, some bad, some awful, some exciting. Regardless, I see the foundation starting to be built in many ways.
Yes I to saw some good things but always remembering this is just for fun FB & once the gun goes off we will really see if what we are seeing is a myth or really truly the beginning of new times in Hempstead
I just hope if we lose to Tennesee, people don't flip out and say we're doomed and we'll be lucky to win 2 games and all of that.
I agree with you one hundred percent. One thousand in fact. This is very similar to Parcells all over again, and like in 1997, we are going to see growing pains that take us to a record somewhere in the range of 9-7 or so. The Jets are not as bad as people make them out to be, and we have a coach who looks like a winner to boot. Like Champ pointed out, come week 1, when the first kickoff is made, we find out if everything we've seen this preseason is a hoax or if it is our new reality.
There are definetly some similarities although I would be shocked if the results are the same.. There is just to much inexperience this year..
Yes and no. This isn't like when Herm stepped in without having been a defensive coordinator or having been mentored for years under someone like Parcells... Mangini, and even Schottenheimer and Sutton are new to their respective positions, but Mangini has a resume that blows away what Herm had. Further, the only real inexperience in our starting team is going to be D'Brick and Mangold, who will most definitely suffer some bad growing pains, but most likely will dramatically outperform, in conjunction with the rest of the o-line, the group of cripples we fielded last year. Our starting defensive unit has plenty of experience, albeit not in the 3-4, but they are veteran and savvy enough to be able to adapt. Our offense is a giant question mark but it does have weapons, and combined with some ingenuity by the coaches, can be optimized... something Herm and Co. could never do.
The 7th sign of the Apocalypse. Champ posts about the Jets, and says nothing negative! Maybe this team really does have a bright future after all.
Keep in mind he will know as soon as the gun sounds in 2006. Pretty damn impressive, ain't he? Most of us SLW will have to wait a couple of years to make that kind of statement.
one of the most positive posts from champ ive seen  I totally agree with you there though, we look better than I expected at WAS but its just a preseason, we'll see what this teams made of in the first 4 weeks though. we need to take some early games to at least get momentum before the 16 weeks takes effect on the younger players. im really interested though, to see how the team closes out the season.
I sure hope you're right GG with one little change...... We beat the Broncos next year in the Championship game!
Just exactly WHEN Jet Fans acknowledge the fact that this IS A REBUILDING YEAR will be when they see your point GG. Until that happens, they'll hang on every inconsequential trade, every statement by Chad, every non statement by Mangini, etc... as some revelation that this team suddenly has become playoff calibre but they don't want anybody else to know about it yet....
I see huge differences between 1997 and 2006. The biggest one being that the Jets were a laughingstock in the mid 90's and the Parcells signing represented a clear departure from that status quo. Nobody was laughing at Bill Parcells. The 2006 Jets are definitely rebuilding, but they are not a laughingstock and nobody will be shocked if they manage to find a way to win 8 or 9 games this year. The 1997 Jet's 9-7 record after 1-15 was a shocker.
yeah – this should be just as gratifying as 97’ – we just need to trust Mangini. After all – he did used to wash Parcells jock in 97…
you know that is a good comparison--the other thing that parallels 1997 IMO is that the 2006 jets (like the 97 jets) are coming off a period of terrible personnel moves by the former bosses. Kotitie in 95 passes on Sapp, took Brady. In 96, he passed on Braackens and took Van Dyke. They signed O'Donnell to a mega contract--lasted 2 years. Much like Boobway drafts and personel moves (Thomas over Reed, McGraw, Jolley trade -down, bad contracts to Martin, Chrebet and Chad, JMAC trade and contract, Adrian Jones, etc). Much like Parcells in 97, the new coach and front office of 2006 jets isn't afraid to sit down/move many of Boobways errors for the betterment of the team. Herm would never sit down Adrian Jones or admit that Jolley can't block because he and Boobway brought them in.
People are already saying we are doomed b/c we lost 2 preseason games. That's just the way things are around here- remember a good portion oft he board was miserable when we were making the playoffs 3 of 4 years and the prospects for postseason don't look good this year so expect the irrational ship jumping after every loss.
The made some mistakes BUT Kotite and Steinberg before him left parcells w/ ALOT of talent just as the previous regime here has left the new regime w/ alot of talent. Now it's up to the new regime to fill in the holes and get the talent to perform like in '97. I'd love to see a '97-type season but I don't think it's going to happen. I think our D will be pretty good but w/ a young OL, a twice repaired shoulder on our QB and the huge questions at RB it's going to be difficult to match '97. Regardless of how great parcells is he needed talent and had it in '97, we have some talent here but not as much as '97. i can see closer to a '93 NE or '00 NE when BP and BB had their 1st years and went 5-11 before taking a big step in year 2.
