Francesa just had Tannenbaum on and they were breaking down last night's game. Talked about the obvious like Leon being the heart of the offense. Then Francesa said I know there's a very unhappy WR in Denver and the Jets would be a great fit for him. Tannenbaum didn't deny it and went on to say yes, we're definitely looking at all options. Let's all hope that's code for yes, we're speaking with the Broncos right now about Marshall. This would put our #1 WR issue to rest for a long time. Marshall and Cotch would be some potent combo.
I really like Marshall. My only issue is he has soooooo much baggage. Great talent though...no doubt about it.
Agreed. A receiver like him can be a young QB's best friend. A person like him can be a coaches worst enemy. Great talent but he scares the hell out of me.
Here's a breakdown of the interview with Fatfuck Francessa. NY Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum says 'nothing is imminent' in Leon Washington contract talks by M.A. Mehta/The Star-Ledger Tuesday August 25, 2009, 6:26 PM Kathy Willens/Associated Press Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum didn't exactly sound like a man who was going to sign Leon Washington to a new contract anytime soon in a radio interview Tuesday. Tannenbaum told WFAN 660 AM that "nothing is imminent" on a reworked deal for the explosive running back. "Leon's a great player," Tannenbaum said. "I expect him to be here a long time. Nothing is imminent, but the lines of communication are open. I expect Leon to be here a long time. And I'm glad he's a Jet." Asked whether the team was currently negotiating with Washington's agent, Tannenbaum said: "I wouldn't say right now we are. We've had dialogue in the past. I'm always an optimistic person by nature. So we'll where this thing goes. But I do expect Leon to e here for a long time. We have some challenges with the collective bargaining agreement. But Leon's an important part of what Rex (Ryan), Woody (Johnson) and I believe in." Washington, who is in the final year of his rookie contract, was the lone bright for the Jets' first-team offense in a 24-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night. Washington accounted for 80 of the 121 total yards generated in the first five series with rookie Mark Sanchez taking the snaps. Washington - who will be a restricted free agent next season due to the uncertainty in the CBA - had 83 total yards (48 rushing yards, 35 receiving yards), including a 19-yard TD catch on Sanchez's final series in the second quarter, last night. He's making $535,000 this season. Tannenbaum also left the door open for a possible trade for a No. 2 WR. "I wouldn't rule anything out at this point," Tannenbaum said. "If we can add a player at the receiver position or a couple other positions, we're going to take a long look at that. We like our team... This time of year unexpected opportunities come along. I want to keep our options open."
marshall doesn't have a lot of baggage, hes been in the news for dumb stuff and most of it ended up being dropped. also, i think rex ryan is more than capable of controlling marshall, as he quickly gains respect from all of his players, both in baltimore and new york
..... so if he does not sign I'm goign to RFA and franchise the fucker, He's screwed and Keels knows it. They have my final offer. If he declines I'm going to run him between the tackles 400 times this year and then Give Jones his money. They keep laughing when I try to Jones or any of our receivers out side of Cotchery in a deal. I mean WTF does it take!
Wrong. This is a ton of baggage no matter how you try to spin it. http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=1331292&postcount=25 http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=1331295&postcount=26
Marshall is about the sorriest NFL player going right now. He's getting suspended every year, he's got a bad habit of beating his girlfriend/wife (hardly a passable offense), he was heavily involved in the incident that got his teammate smoked, he's one strike away from getting suspend a year (yea he's in Pac Man and Chris Henry's league), he just had hip surgery, he whines and complains, he wants a boat load of cash and he would cost at least a #1 pick. Sounds like just what we need.
I'd rather not spend a 1st round pick+ on a WR who already has some baggage attached. Really I'd rather the Jets just let somebody try to separate from the crowd and use them as the #2 with Stuckey in the slot. The worst thing that could happen doing that is that nobody qualifies and the Jets win 7 games next year instead of trading for Marshall and winning 7 games next year. WR is not an impact position in the NFL until the QB has his feet on the ground, and even then it's one of the most easily filled positions. There's a good to great free agent WR almost every year. There are journeyman guys who can do the job every year. No reason to waste a 1st round pick unless you are getting a clearly 1st round caliber player without a lot of trouble attached to him.
Everyone (especially Mike T) please read this if you have a couple of hours. Serioulsy, this is a guy you want to cheer for? A guy you want to be able to count on? A guy you can be proud of? Don't be so short sighted. I know we all want a big time WR this in not the way to go. Please Jets don't sell your soul!
BOWE!!!! GO GET BOWE!!!!!! You know he's trade able right now. Bowe is the only WR so far that has given Revis trouble.
Why would he be kidding? I'm not too enthused with getting a Pac Man clone. Everyone can say that his troubles were minor or what not, but trouble doesn't find you, you find trouble.
Well, even in the draft you are 50/50 when it comes to taking a WR in the 1st round as to whether or not they have or will have baggage, and you're looking about a 25% chance they achieve that first round status at any point in their career. Granted, these odds are pulled out of my ass, but they're likely closer to accurate than not. I'll take the known commodity rather than take the 1 in 8 chance I get a guy that lives up to his first round potential and has no off the field issues. Marshall, Cotchery, Stuckey, Clowny, Whoever sounds a hell of alot better to me than: Cotchery, Clowney, Stuckey, Henry, Whoever And yeah, I like Henry to make the top 5 if we don't sign anybody else.
I'd just rather not take a WR in the first round at all unless it's a pick way down at the bottom of the round. There are 3 top 10 WR's in the last decade who have played in Super Bowls at this point. 2 of them (Torry Holt and Larry Fitzgerald) got there because they played with Kurt Warner, period. The third guy, Plaxico Burress, got let go by the team that drafted him (the smartest team in football BTW) and then basically got kicked off the team he helped win it all, an amazing achievement if you think about it. WR's are just not worth the gamble. Go sign somebody else's big free agent, like the Giants did, if you think he's the last piece. Save your first round picks for trench guys and quarterbacks. That's where you'll actually win in the NFL. Always has been too.
He's already been suspended once. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3520985 He was nearly suspended again. And this whole offseason has been a soap opera surrounding him. And if Mike Shanahan couldn't "control" Marshall why do you think Rex Ryan would?
if you're saying warner made fitzgerald you aren't watching football. the guy leaps and makes one hand grabs and insane dives to catch warner's passes sometimes. that's crazy.
I think he's saying that Kurt Warner guided those teams to the Super Bowls not the recievers themselves.
